If you plan to go to the US, unless exempted, you need a US Visa. You may have applied for US Visa and if your visa was approved, your passport would have been taken to the US Consulate. If you attended the interview and even though the visa officer said it is approved, you may be curious to know the status of the US Visa stamping in your passport.
The question is, how do you check the status of your US Visa online? Also, even if your passport was returned and you were issued a slip saying something like administrative processing, you still would like to check the status of your visa online. We will look at the process to check the US visa status online below with full screenshots.
Step-by-Step Guide to Check US Visa Status Online for Stamping in Passport
Step 1 – Visit CEAC Website: You need to go to the US Dept. of State’s Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website. CEAC is part of the US Dept of State and is used to create DS-160, and DS-260 visa applications. You would have used the same to create your US visa application. Here is the link : https://ceac.state.gov/ceac/ .
Step 2 – Click Check My Visa Application Status: Depending on the kind of US Visa, you applied for, either a Non-immigrant Visa or an Immigrant Visa, you need to click on Check My Visa Application Status. Below are the direct links as well to check the status.
Below is the screenshot of how the Non-immigrant US Visa Status Check form looks like and details on what to enter. Let’s look at what to enter in the next step.
Step 3 – Enter Location, Application ID, or Case Number: Once you are on that page, you need to enter the below information as highlighted in the above screenshot with arrows and click on Submit button.
- Select a Location: In the dropdown, select the location where you went for the US Visa interview. Sometimes, you would have selected a different location for the visa interview than the original location you selected while filling out DS-160. In such cases, if you get an error that says “Your search did not return any data” case cannot be found, you can select the original DS-160 location you used when filling the DS-160 form.
- Application ID or Case Number: You can either enter the Application ID or the Case Number in this field. Depending on what you have, you can enter either of them. If one of them does not give any result, you can try theother.
- Application ID: The Application ID is on your US Visa Appointment confirmation letter. It would be written next to a field that reads “Confirmation Number” or say “Application ID”. It looks like the below screenshot on the letter or DS-160 application.
- Case Number: A ‘Case Number’ is something that the consulate would give and it is usually on a slip that is given to you, usually for Administrative processing or 221g. It is in the format 2020118 145 1001. You need to enter it correctly with spaces, otherwise, you will get an error saying “Your search did not return any data”. See the below screenshot on how the ‘Case Number’ looks. The Visa officer would have written it on the 221g form.
- Application ID: The Application ID is on your US Visa Appointment confirmation letter. It would be written next to a field that reads “Confirmation Number” or say “Application ID”. It looks like the below screenshot on the letter or DS-160 application.
- Passport Number: In this field, you must enter your passport number. If you have submitted the form before January 1st, 2022, you should enter NA. If there are any errors, you can just enter NA and try to check the status.
- First 5 Letters of Surname: In this field, you need to enter the first 5 letters of your Family Name or Surname as it appears on your passport. If you do not have Surname, then you can enter either NA or your first name. If you have filed the DS-160 before Jan 1st, 2022, you should enter NA. If any errors, you can enter NA in this field.
- Enter the Code as shown below: This is the captcha code to prevent bots. You need to enter the code that is shown in the image for spam bot check verification for humans.
Step 4 – View US Visa Status: Once you enter everything correctly and there are no errors, you will get the US Visa status displayed. It can be in a few statuses like Administrative Processing, Issued, or other statuses.
See the below screenshots for examples of what you can expect to see. If in Administrative processing, you need to wait. If it says issued, then your visa was issued and you can be sure that your Visa stamping is complete and your US visa was issued.
US Visa Status – No Status
Usually, when you submit your documents for US Visa renewal using the dropbox option or occasionally after you attend an in-person visa interview, you may see the online status on the CEAC website that says ‘No Status’. It looks as in the below screenshot.
You see this status very commonly seen for dropbox cases. The reason for this is that they take some time to review the documents and update the case status online. There is a few days delay. Some users have reported that it took them up to 10 days. You may see this status anywhere from a few days up to 10 days from the date you dropped off the document or visited the consulate.
Do not panic, if you see the ‘No Status’ online for up to a week or 10 days. Only reach out to the consulate, if it continues to be in that state for longer.
US Visa Status – Administrative Processing
If you get the Administrative Processing, it means that the visa is not yet issued and there are checks in progress. You see this usually also for the first few days after your interview is done. If you were issued a 221g Administrative Processing, then this may take a longer time to move to issued.
Update: Since March 3rd, 2020 Users are not seeing the Administrative processing status anymore, they are seeing a new status that shows as refused. It looks like the below. Do not panic, it is a system-wide change to the text displayed.
See the below screenshot for updated text for Administrative processing cases. It says clearly that “If you were informed by the consular officer that your case was refused for administrative processing, your case will remain refused while undergoing such processing. You will receive another adjudication once such processing is complete. ” See highlighted text.

US Visa Status – Issued
If you have the Issued status, it means that your visa stamping is almost done and it is final stages. You should receive it soon in a week to 10 days. If you do not receive anything, then you can contact the consulate for the same.
US Visa Status – Refused
If your visa was denied or refused, then you will see the ‘Refused’ status on the CEAC website. It essentially means that you could not prove to the consular officer that you are eligible for the issuance of a visa. There could be many reasons, sometimes, they are denied under 214(b) or other reasons. Your consular officer would give you a slip or indicate a reason for your denial.
For some cases, the refused status would be shown online as soon as the interview is done…for some cases like H1B, where they usually give Administrative processing, which is 221(g), and let’s say eventually refuse or deny the visa, then it will show up much later…
Below are screenshots of the Refused status of a US visa on the CEAC website one in Calgary, the other in Chennai.
Update : The text for actual refused cases also changed from the previous text. It has slightly different text that says, ” A U.S. consular officer has adjudicated and refused your visa application..” Check below.
Error: “Your search did not return any data”
If you are on the CEAC website and trying to check your US Visa status, sometimes you may get the error “Your Search did not return any data”. It looks like as shown in the screenshot below.
You may be confused when you see this error and wonder why your US Visa application details are not fetched. This error can occur for a host of reasons, let’s look at each of them.
- You did not enter data properly: One of the very common reasons you see this error is that you did not enter the data properly. You would have removed the spaces in the Case Number. Please enter them with spaces properly.
- Example: 2020118 145 1001. Notice there are two spaces in the number. If you fix the spaces, the error will go away.
- Also, sometimes the last name or passport number can be problematic. You can enter NA in both fields and try.
- Visa Interview Application details not updated in the System: If you check the case status immediately after your Visa interview appointment or after you drop off your documents for Dropbox appointment, then the chances are your application details are not updated in the system. In such cases, you need to enter the DS-160 Details to get the application status. You must enter the below
- Location : The location that you selected during completion of DS-160 Form (could be different from the Visa Interview or Dropbox location)
- Application ID: Enter the DS-160 Application Number
- Passport Number: NA or your passport number
- First 5 Letters of Surname: NA or first 5 letters of your Surname/family name
Usually, most of the errors with the system would go away if you wait for a few days after the interview or after the drop off of your documents.
Common FAQs – US Visa Status Check
If you get an error saying “Invalid Application ID or Case Number” like below, then you have either selected the wrong location and entered the Application ID or case number or you have entered the Application ID number wrong. It also can occur, if you enter the case number and miss some digits or add more digits. If you fix the numbers entered, then the error would go away. 
If you have blank surname or family name on passport, you can enter NA and try. If that does not work, then you can try to enter your first name. Sometimes entering FNU or LNU also can work.
If you get an error due to changes in the location of the visa interview, then you can try entering the actual DS-160 location that you used, when you submitted the form. Also, in such cases, you can try NA for both Last name and Passport number, if errors continue.

I had my H1B + H4 dropbox appointment on Feb 7th. Same here. I had my dropbox appointment on Feb 1st and I still haven’t received my passport yet. The status was set to “Application Received” on CEAC and status on cgifederal/atlas website was set to blank “Document Delivery Information”. There has been no change to this status. I emailed them so many times and they just send a template email saying to wait patiently. I tried calling them to check the status but it always skips the UID I enter and asks to enter another one or terminate. Its so frustrating.
I appeared for an in-person interview for the tourist visa (B1/B2) at the Vancouver Consulate, in Canada on the 14th of February 2023. I was told by the V.O. at the end of the interview that the visa was was approved and that it’d take about a week for the passport to return. However, I’ve still not received any updates on it, none at all. Moreover, the status of my application, as on the CEAC visa status tracking website, is stuck at ‘APPROVED’ since the day of my interview. This has been the status as is, ever since I left the Consulate building on the day of the interview. The thing is, it hasn’t moved from there. Both timestamps, that is the case created date and case last updated date have 14-Feb-2023. I’m a bit worried at this point. Some of my colleagues who appeared for an interview at around the same time or a day after me in the Toronto Consulate, have been receiving updates in the form of tracking details of the passport dispatch but mine is stuck at that status. Just for your reference, I’m an Indian citizen and a tourist in Canada. I was supposed to return to India in a few weeks but looks like I might just have to push my return tickets further. Well, sometimes, there can be delays. You need to wait for the status to become ‘Issued’. Follow-up with the consulate again as it has been two weeks. Sometimes, it can take time. Do update how it goes here.

• I had ticket for excessive speeding and I was also finger printed for the same during 2012, I have highlighted about this during my visa interview and also I emphasized the visa officer to take a look at the papers. He collected the papers and mentioned that he will scan and add that to my file so that it will be there for reference.
• Because of the above case, I am sure mine should have gone to security check. But only thing was the status in ceac was Approved and it did not get changed to Administrative Processing.
• In between I dropped an email to check the status but I got a below standard reply. Post that I stopped checking the status frequently
o “Your visa application is under processing at the Embassy/Consulate. Also, when additional administrative processing is required, the length of processing time will vary based on the circumstances of each case hence it cannot be expedited”
• If you are in similar situation, My only advice is don’t think too much or keep checking the status. Try diverting your thoughts, Because you could not do much except reading some experiences from such forums
• But, what I have seen in these forums are, There are so many who have reported the problem. But it is un fortunate that not many have come back to update their final status

My application was rejected based on 221g on December 12,2022. I was asked to come in for interview on Jan 13, 2023. Then was issued pink-slip to get additional documents. On 8th Feb, (last wednesday), the first update on status happened from “Refused” to “Approved”. Today, 14th Feb, the status went from “Approved” to “Application Received”.
I am not sure if this is something everyone else has experienced?

Online statuses can be very misleading. Do not worry too much.
Me to faced the same issue. But mine changed from application received to approved in a week. But still waiting for passport
He there. Mine went from ‘refused’ to ‘approved’ on 8th Feb (221g), then it went from ‘Approved’ to ‘Application Received” on 14th Feb, and yesterday, on the 16th, it went from “Application Received” back to “Approved”. This whole status thing is so misleading.

The status on the application changed to ‘ Application Received ‘ on April 16. I did email the support@ustraveldocs.com email which replied to call a number if I do not get an email to pick up the passport within 10 days. After calling the number the agent said the same thing ‘Sir Wait’.

Finally The visa arrived on March 2nd, exactly after one month of drop box appointment.
The status changed from Application received to Approved on March 1 and changed again to Issued on March 2.

Well, if you have already submitted it, not much you can do now. Hope for the best. Usually, some typos do happen. Be open and say, it is an honest typo mistake, if something were to go wrong. Stay positive.
One thing you could also do is, email them with the details indicating that you did mistake and want to fix it. I am not sure, how it would pan out. At least, from your side, you know you have done the right thing. They may ask you to fill out new DS-160. Do update here how it goes.

“Approve” status means it is just approved. For the VISA to be returned to you, it will change to “Issued” status and then it will move to “Origination Scan” status, which means it is going to be sent over to the center (from US consulate probably) from where you’d be able to pick it up. Then it will be the final “Ready for pickup” status shown, when you can go pick it up.
whats the difference between approved and refused , I have heard some folks got refused after approved how much is that true mine is stuck in approved for more than 10 days.

The statuses can keep changing and confuse people. In general, approved means that you got the visa and they will issue with visa stamp in passport. If refused, it could be anything ranging from admin processing to requesting more documents, etc.

My wifes dropbox date was on 15th November, 2022. on the US visa status website it shows Application received on 22nd November, 2022. There has been no update since then the dropbox was at Hyderabad consulate. DS-160 however had the Mumbai location. She is there for H4 visa stamping.
The track my passport results shows the passport is still with the embassy. what are the way i can contact the embassy?
She has a return flight on 8th December, 2022 and still the visa is not approved.

My wife is in the same boat. Documents dropped on Feb 2nd , application received status on Feb 16, 2023 and no update since then.
I submitted my old and new passport on November 10th.
It said approved on 15th November, and to contact the embassy once it has been 10 working days.
The status hasn’t changed to issued yet and I haven’t received my passport back. It has been 10 working days now (accounting for Thanksgiving).
I wanted to get some perspective from others here: How long did it take you before you got it from approved to issued? Did anyone else experience a similar delay? Did you eventually get your passport?

Hi! Thank you for this webpage; it is great and extremely informative. However, I find myself in a slightly different situation. I attended my Dropbox IW interview in Chennai on the 7th of November, 2022.
1) On the 8th, my visa status updated to Received
2) On the 10th, my visa status updated to Approved. However, since the 10th the status has not updated at all.
3) When I email the passportstatus@ustraveldocs.com email, I get a response, “… there is no update for the Passport number you submitted”. On the passport status tracking webpage, it says “..passport is still with US Embassy/Consulate”.
I am very nervous/tense and wondering if it is somehow in administrative processing but the status is updated incorrectly. I have reached out to the embassy using the Phone number listed, and was directed to a call center which had IVR but the system hangs up when I entered the UID as it was prompted. I also raised a support ticket and they have not been able to help much either.
What can I do next? I am increasingly nervous and frankly at my wits end. Please advise if you have any ideas, or if there are any ways to contact the consulate directly? Thanks!

I attended H1B interview along with 3 H4 dependents(spouse & 2 kids) at Hyderabad Consulate on 17th October. I opted for premium delivery and I got my passport and my 2 dependents(kids) passport delivered on 21st October. However I did not receive my spouse’s passport till date and her VISA application status shows ‘Approved’ and was last updated date shows as 17th October in the portal. This is a general status for anyone where they have the application with them. You do not have to do anything. It will change, ignore it.

Frankly, it does not matter. Try to check based on the consulate that your application would be processed.

Thanks for the reply. It was a group application of my parents. My dad’s application shows “Issued” and he already received the e-mail saying the passport is ready for pick-up but the document with the barcode, only shows my dad’s name and passport #.
On the other hand, my mom’s application keeps saying “Refused” and the long text of the admin process.
Hopefully, they would give them both passports with their visas, I’m worried cuz the pick-up document only shows him.

I dropped my documents at VAC Delhi on August 4, 2022 it showed AP after 2 days n then issued 2 days later and then approved a week later but now it shows refused with the long status message

I did Dropbox in Bangalore , Vac is Hyderabad . Me and my daughter applied for h4 stamping . Husband’s H1b got stamped few weeks ago . Ours is a simple case . When me and my daughter were at the Bangalore vac the person who took out documents was nice and told us that it’s going to take some time because there is extra backlog and also with the new rule that you can drop off the documents anywhere it’s little tough for them .
It’s been 14 calendar days since I dropped off . First 11 days it showed nothing . And on 7th the status got updated to application received . I know it creates a lot of anxitey and nervousness but there is nothing we can do about it . Easiest is to drop the email to us travel docs . I called the helpline multiple times but they have the same update as me . Best is to only wait . Patience is the key to success .
I am still waiting for our passports and visa to be stamping but I am positive and so should everyone be .
Take care guys and I will update my situation once I get my passports stamped .

I appeared for my L1 interview on March 22nd.
The Visa office gave me a white slip 221g with a Case Number , kept my passport and i129s.
On March 28th the status of “Case Number” changed to “Issued”.
While the status of my “Application Id” still shows as “Refused” , its being updated constantly and last update was on April 18th.

I see on comments many of us we have same question regarding the status “Your search did not return any data” my case was In Transit status and after couple of weeks I reached out to Embassy to see if they received case and after like two weeks they respond to me that they are not open yet for interviews and since then I can’t track the case I try every single day and status shows that “ Your search did not return any data“ I contacted them again to ask if they are any issues with case they didn’t respond to me until now .

I had the same issue. I checked everything and what I changed was the Location. Mine was issued in Mexico, Tijuana and I changed it to Mexico, Mexico City and I got an Administrative Processing status… I think I am in the final status. Hope this helps!
