Applying for an Indian passport used to be a complicated process in the past and mostly done with the help of agents. But things have changed in the past few years with good processes and technology. You do not need an agent anymore and can do it everything on your own.
In this article, we cover the entire process end to end and also have user experiences too.
Indian Passport Renewal vs Re-Issue
“Renewal and Re-issue are used interchangeably by many. But there is a subtle difference. The term renewal is used, if you have a passport with Short Validity Passport (SVP) and you are applying for extending the same. In that case, you will still be getting a new book. Unlike, Re-issue relates to exhaustion of pages or passport reaching the end of a 10 year validity. The terms renewal and re-issue are used interchangeably in the article below for easy understanding. The process is same, so nothing to worry.
When can you Renew or Re-issue Indian Passport?
You can renew or re-issue your Indian passport up to 1 year before the expiration of the passport. If you are a student, you can get re-issue of your passport within two years of expiry by selecting reason ” Validity expired within 3 years/ Due to expire”. You can also renew or get re-issue of passport, if you meet any of the below :
- Your personal details changed like name, martial status, etc.
- Your passport expired already within last 3 years or before
- Your passport pages are completely full and no pages left
- Your passport is damaged or you lost the same.
Passport Document Advisor : Indian Passport Website has a document advisor, that clearly tells the required documents, you should enter your details, to get the list of documents required before you begin to process, so that you do not end up in panic after registering. Below is the step by step guide to get Indian Passport re-issue or renewed.
Step 1: Register Online Account at Passport Website
Since the paper based forms are eliminated, you need to fill Indian passport application online. Below are the details.
- The very first step is to register yourself with the Passport Website. All you need to do is go to Passport Seva Website and click on ” New User Registration”.
- You will be asked to fill basic details and email ID. This will be used to login and fill the passport application form. You can choose the passport office based on where you currently live now.
- The second thing is to activate your account using the email you get and login.
- After you login, you will see an option called “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport”. Click on that and enter details.
- Can Submit Passport Application Anywhere : Since June 2018, as per new guidance, you can apply for passport anywhere in India. You do not have to do it in the same state of your residence. There is a dropdown in the account creation page, you are free to choose the location where you are
Step 2: Fill Passport Application Online
After you activate your account and login, you will be presented with two options to fill out application form, the online system will show as Alternative 1 and Alternative 2 . It does not matter what you use, both work the same.
- Alternative 1 : Using Online form to fill the application online. You will need internet.
- Alternative 2 : Using PDF form. You download the form, fill it out and then upload it.
The recommended option is to use the Alternative 2 with PDF form as some details may not be readily available with us and we have to save info, etc. I also prefer the PDF form option as it is very detailed and clear. Either case, it is the same. You will need the below details to complete the form.
- Your current address details and other details that are already in your previous passport.
- You need to enter Emergency Contact Details like Name, phone number and email.
- If you are changing any details like adding Spouse info, their info as per document
If you are using the PDF form option, you will need to fill all the mandatory fill and then hit validate and Save, it will ask you to save a file (XML file) and give it a name.
You need to upload that file in the section where you just downloaded the PDF form. All the details will be automatically created, you need to verify before saving as you cannot change the details after this step. Of course, you can change them when you are at passport office, if anything wrong.
Step 3 : Pay and Book a Slot or Walk –in, Print Application Receipt :
Once your application is created, next step is to check for available slots and then pay for it. There is an option on the website home page to check the slots as well or you can go to Check Appointment Availability. Anyways, once your application is submitted. you need to select it, for that see below.
- You will have an option on the left saying ” View Saved / Submitted Applications “. Select the application by clicking on radio button. Then you will show options with links to them. You need to click on Pay and Schedule Appointment.
- This will give option for payment, either online or pay with challan. Usually, it is easy to do it online way. Selected Online Payment
- Then you will have option to select the Passport Service Kendra and the time slot. It will show the available time slots options.
- You can select the same and then you will go for payment page. Where you can select your payment option. I used NetBanking and it was seamless.
If you are eligible for walk-in, you can cancel the appointment and then carry that cancellation page, along with the payment receipt page, you will be allowed to walk-in directly during the respective hours.
Once payment is complete, you will have to print the application receipt and carry that with you on the appointment day. It will have a bar code as well, ensure that is clearly printed and it has the payment confirmation info on it. If you find something wrong in the details, make a note, then you can tell the same at passport service kendra.
Step 4 : Documents List for Passport Re-issue or Renewal
You have a nice step by step guide to help you identify the list of documents that you need for your passport renewal. If you go to the home page and click on Document Advisor for renewal / re-issue , you will get a form to select options. Based on options it will show the list of documents that you need. These are the documents you will need. NO Additional documents are required. In fact, I called the customer support as well and they said the same list and my experience at Passport Seva Kendra says the same. You do NOT require additional documents. Do NOT listen to others.
Indian Passport Renewal Documents Checklist
Below are the typical documents that you need to carry to the passport office, depending on your situation.
- You must print out the online form that you printed out with the Application Reference Number(ARN) and carry it with you. It is mandatory to have this document with you.
- Original Old Passport that is expiring or expired
- Same Address as in your Old Passport :
- You do NOT need anything other than the photocopy of your passport’s first page, last page, and the page with ECNR info. You will do self-attestation ( your own signature)
- You may carry current address proof like a utility bill or Bank statement or Voter card, etc… see below for some of those documents.
- Change in Address – Different one from your Old passport address
- Just like above, first, last and ECNR page photo copy with self attestation
- Address proof of change in address – Any one of the below is acceptable.
- Any one of the Utility bills like Water, Telephone, Electricity Bills – You need at least for 2 months of which one should be of current year and other should be of previous year.
- Proof of gas connection. If you are submitting utility gas bill, PSK will ask for two of those from past two months. Make sure you carry two of them. This was shared by our reader Karthik.
- Ration Card with address .
- Bank Statement for 1 year, Passbook of the bank account with address on it.
- Any of the cards like Aadhar card, Voter ID, etc.
- Add Spouse Name, Change
- If you would like to add your spouse name, carry original and photo copy of your marriage certificate. It is required. You need a photo copy that needs to be self attested.
- If you plan to change any details like names, etc, you need to carry original with photo copy signed by you.
There may be other set of documents that you may be asked from the website, if some exceptions for your case. That’s why always check passportwebsite.
Step 5: Go to the passport Office (PSK) for the Appointment
If you have got a slot, go at that exact time or 15 min before, no need to go there and wait outside. If you are eligible for walk in, you can do that. The process at PSK is very straightforward and they have clear steps for the process.
High Level Process inside the PSK:
- Section A – Processing Counter : You will go to their waiting lounge, where you will be able to work with the first processing center and they will be named as Section A. These are usually TCS outsourcing employees who will verify everything and then issue you a token number to go to next section
- Section B – Verification Counter: This section is called Section B and it is where your documents are re-verified and corrections are done. You will wait in the waiting hall, where you can see the queue number and go to the respective counter. Here you will be asked to sign electronically, your biometrics will be taken and all the relevant documents will be scanned, if you have not submitted them online. This is also handled by the outsourcing company such as TCS, you will find this step very efficient as well.
- Section C – Granting Counter: This is the section where the actual passport granting happens. It is handled by an Indian Govt. Officer who will verify everything and grant issuance of your passport. This is called as Section C. This can take time here and it can be long. Again, here also there is also queue and you will need to wait for the token number to be called. The officer may ask a question or two and grant passport if all is fine with your application.
- Exit: You will exit at the last step after Section C, where you will be asked by the security guard to show the appointment letter and he may stamp on the acknowledgement paper for your reference.

Indian Passport Renewal Experiences
Below are real experiences shared by our readers A G Bhat, in Bangalore and Mrinal from Mumbai. Thanks to them for sharing his experience. Also, we have many other experiences in the comments, do check them out.
Passport Re-issue Experience at Mumbai
I had my Indian Passport renewal today in Mumbai(Andheri PSK) as my passport was expiring within 1yr. Got appointment for 9.15AM IST and was asked to report at 9am. (Under Regular processing) . Process was very smooth and straightforward and I was complete in 1hr time (primarily due to preparation and early slot).
Passport Re-issue Process at Mumbai
1. I had actually downloaded the PDF first and filled it and kept so that any trials errors needed were done on that.
2. I was having minor difficulty uploading it probably because i renamed etc. However I used the filled PDF as entry for Online application (Which also can be saved and filled over multiple attempts like for any college /visa application).
3. The form was submitted.
4. I have just moved back from US so I wrote my current Indian address which was also in my Aadhaar card . Mentioned US address for previous in last 1yr stay without state or county.
5. I had even uploaded PDF copy of all documents though not sure if it was any help today.
6. Paid online and booked appointment
Documents Required On Passport Appointment Day
1. Originals: Passport(old), Aadhaar (both top and bottom part: for Address proof and ECNR), 10th Marks card (for ECNR)
2. Copy of first 2 pages, last 2 pages and Page number 2 of passport which would either not mention anything or ECR. ( I had not taken page 2 and was asked to take photocopy at Passport Seva Kendra)
3. Copy of 10th marks card and Aadhar both top and bottom part. ( Had not taken copy of top part and had to take at PSK.)
Process at PSK for Passport Re-issue
At the PSK try to reach early for your reporting time. The entry is not based on sequence number assigned but based on your arrival for your reporting time. Once you enter, the originals, photocopy and application receipt are checked once and after all documents are confirmed you are asked to wait till they generate token number. After token number is generated you are asked to go inside and wait for 1st step in A counter.
At the A counter documents are scanned, photo taken, biometrics verified and signatures taken. Also they check if you want to enroll in Mobile Seva(Sms updates for Rs 40). If yes you pay in cash exact amount. Once done you are asked to goto B counter.
At B Verification Officer (VO) validates the entries again and puts his ticks & sign in the application. Once B is complete, one proceeds to C counter for Granting Officers approval who again verifies documents and stamps both the old passport ( Cancel & returned) and approval stamp for application,
Once that is done you are asked to proceed to exit counter where you are given acknowledgement receipt and asked to fill feedback form. The acknowledgement ideally mentions your passport approved post police verification.
Passport Renewal Experience at Bangalore
My passport had expired three months back. I read the articles in this site and understood the procedure to be followed. After understanding the same clearly, I applied online and selected the slot at Bengaluru (Lalbhag) PSK. I applied on a Saturday and slot was available for very next Monday. However, I opted for a slot on Wednesday which I got. So there was no necessity for me to cancel the same and go for “walk in”. On Wednesday, my time was at 10.45 AM and I went there exactly at 10.30AM.
The process at PSK was exactly the same the Hyderabad PSK explained in this site. Courteous people, proper guidance at every stage, no confusion at all and no hassles. After successfully finishing the entire process I came out from PSK at 11.15AM, in just 30 minutes for whole process. I gave my feedback as “Excellent” for the service but I feel that this is too less a grade. World class experience indeed. Thanks to the vision of the External Affairs Department of Govt of India. And my thanks to all concerned, from Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister to TCS and every one in the PSK.
Along with my wife also had applied for re issue of her Passport. We both selected the same slot and went inside together and we both came out together. She could not believe that such things can happen in our country.
Common FAQs
In the past, there were few things that were not clear. Now, with online process and outsourcing the process is fully online and no need for agent. You can do everything on your own.
It usually takes anywhere from 10 days or so to 30 days. In many cases with the new system, many were able to get passport within 10 days. But, if there are some delays in police verification or other things, it can take time.

For passport reissue police (post-)verification process: do we need to provide all and exact departure and arrival dates of “all” the times when we have traveled abroad, supported with police report from the countries where we have stayed ? For instance I have traveled close to 15 times in my previous passport, to 8 countries, how can I even get a report for each and every country traveled ? Isn’t this the precise reason we are providing an affidavit annexe-I. Please help!
Sorry for multiple questions on this page: I have been staying in the same address for the last 10+ years, basically my parents place, but I have been traveling out of the country and coming back a few times, (max stay outside was one whole year, during 2013), but been staying the in the same address for last two years and not traveled out of the country.
Do I need to mention all this (travel dates prior to 2013) in the passport application or the police verification report. Unfortunately, I have missed it out while submitting the passport application, as I have said I have been staying the same permanent address for nearly 10+ years…. now very worried does this need to be updated.

If you have already submitted, it is too late I guess. Usually they may or may not do the police verification for re-issue as per last year rule. Usually for new issue of passport, the address they ask is for current address and permanent address, if they are different they do verification at both places. If you have switched to multiple places in one year, then they ask for all of them and verify the same. In your case, I guess, it will be your current and permanent address, if they do it.
Mr, Kumar, thank you firstly, I have been residing at the same address from the last two years, provide banks statements, aadhar + non-expired passport, however the police official requested my to write the dates of latest travel outside the country, which I gave, and was more that 2 years from today, and then he mentions that as this information is not mentioned in the passport application nor is accompanied by a police verification report from the country where stayed, he would therefore send an adverse report.
Now my question is how many years / months of address proof do we need to provide in passport application ? I think this should be only last twelve months. If I am correct why is he asking me for police cert from abroad country though I am staying in the country for the last two years in the same address.
Now that I am in this lurch could you please advice on what I need to do next ? Unfortunately, I am getting tired of there bureaucratic process designed for harassing a law abiding working class citizens, also deemed ineffective for catching the real culprits. Please advice!

I do not think you need to mention about the travel details, you will need to share your address details.
I have received the passport through tatkal, and post-verification is pending. I was called by the local thana and visited the place recently.
How do we verify that the police verification for the tatkal passport was successful ?
I really did not have the best experience at the local thana, and now I am worried if they are going to send a `adverse` report. The person in the thana was asking me to provide a police verification report for the time I have stayed abroad to the country where I stayed. They have already canceled my old passport.
Does sending a adverse report cause problem while traveling in the airport or immigration ? How will I know if the verification is done successfully ? Please advice, I need to travel soon, and don’t want to end up in problem in immigration.

It does not need to be stable, what matter is that you need to provide your current address. You can get current address rental agreement as proof, bank passbook with photo, letter from you office, etc. You can check passport office website for full list.

Walk-ins are only for certain set of people like children, old age, etc. I suggest you call the customer service or the PSK on the details. You can find the details on passport gov website.
How long will a passport take to be renewed by the normal procedure? My passport has expired and I am trying to figure out if I need to apply through tatkal or if I can do it the normal way. How many days does it take through tatkal vs. the normal proceudre?
From minor to adult, the proof of document required is only proof of birth date, i.e. birth certificate or school leaving certificate, which indicates your date of birth or even certificate from your employer, if Govt / semiGovt employee that according to their register date of birth will suffice.
If all your documents are correct and accepted, your passport generally takes anything like 15 days to 45 days. Tatkal passport will have to continuously followed up with customer service.

Well, as per the document advisor, I believe marriage certificate is sufficient. I have not done it personally as my spouse did not change her name. You need to give your current address, where you live, as they may have police verification. Also, you need to give two local references too, so your current address is the relevant one.
Sir, I am applying for passport reissue through tatkal, I have consumed all three appointments now the amount paid is just gone for a waste and would be forfeited, as every time get the APO gives a DNA, though I have provided all documents intact. The address in EPIC does not match the other three docs (pan, passport, and aadhar). I contacted voterid office, they suggested to wait until the next local elections, which is one years from now. The previous police verification is not available on-line on their system, nor is it updated by the require authorities by the police dept properly. Note my previous passport during 2006 was reissued, and is soon getting expired. What is the solution for getting a passport reissued with out a Annexure-F (I dont know – MLA/MP/Manthri’s/IPS officers – as I am a common women and my father was an ordinary school teacher). I am not sure about the complexities of your case, one of things you can do is to apply using regular processing. It hardly takes 15 days now-a-days with better system for regular processing. Also, you can call and speak to customer service and ask for details by explaining your case.
Sir, thanks for the input there a large difference in what the customer service says and what is on the document advisor and the process being followed lately. For submitting in normal queue/processing of passport, do we still require Annexure-I or Annexure-F, in addition to pan + aadhar + epic ?

Well, in my opinion, I believe that customer service are better at giving you the right answer. I have had questions in the past and the info given by them was better. Again, this is my experience. You may have to trust their advice and take a chance. I wish I could add more, I have not applied for Tatkaal personally, so cannot answer.

I believe, you should get your marriage certificate first and then do it right. You have martial status section in application and you should answer it correctly. If you get police inquiry, then you are in trouble. Avoid issues by doing it right.

Well, I am not sure. Please use the document advisor. You can just go for normal as it takes under 15 days. I suggest you speak to Customer service as your situation is new to me.

You should add the current name that she uses after wedding. Well, they may or may not ask for the formal procedure documents, I am not sure…As per document advisor on the website, all they need is marriage certificate and copy of your passport. You can try calling the customer service for confirmation.

You can apply for passport with your current address. You can mention the same that you are a joint family and staying together and carry respective documents of your current address. You can always get your bank to have your current address updated. You will need to provide references at your current address, it can get tricky if you give the address that you are not present. There may be police verification, depending on the case for re-issue or renewal. You can speak to customer service and clarify, if any questions.

Now when I print my application , I realized that the expiry date entered it wrong(5 days later).

I do not think you need to take a new appointment for that. You will be asked in Stage B to verify details, you can take a note and get that corrected. We have other mistake with address, got it fixed at stage B in PSK.

1. No, you should disclose your current state of facts. There is no mandatory clause to change your last name. You should get your marriage certificate as it will create issues in long term.
2. No, you will get current address on passport and you will need to give references of local people around your area for police verification.

You will need to carry and show the old passport, they will put a small stamp on the first page and thats about it. They will not take it, they will return after verifying it. They will not do anything to visas in it, they all remain in tact and valid.

The document advisor on the website doesn’t mention the requirement of producing the Annexure-F which is the recommendation letter.
It only requests the old passport copy and an address proof for change of address.
Is there still a chance that I’ll be asked for it when I go for the renewal as it is not very easy to obtain?

Well, honestly, I do not know….there are different answers given for different people. You can try to go for it without Annexure-F and give it a try. You may call the customer service for clarification.

I am a homemaker so what else besides copy of old passport do I need VC/PIL/NOC/IC site mentioned. And whose signatures or stamps I need on them. I filled the form on line. Well, for Tatkaal, it can be tricky, if they are asking for documents, you may have to provide, there is no alternative. You may request them the need for the same. Try to see, if moving that to regular processing would not require those documents…these days passports are issued in 10 to 15 days.

Yes, you can do that. There is no need to have your specific named card to do that. I have done that for my sister, system does not care about it.
Hello Kumar, One more question, I work abroad and been out of country for more than 12 months. If i opt to renew my passport in India during my vacation,
1. can i provide my india address as Present and permanent address. Pl note that i am holding Green card and i am on work visa.
2. If i have to provide my current address as USA address and permanent address as India address. will there be any delay in getting my passport. Also will i be issued with SVP?

1. Your present address is NOT India, so you should not do that. You will need to give local references and there may be police verification based on their discretion. So, you need to be clear.
2. Well, it all depends on many factors, hard to say. Usually, for re-issue there is no police verification, if the previous record is clear..again, it is upto the discretion of passport officer.
3. Well, I think you should state the true facts and avoid complications.
If I were you, I would apply for passport re-issue abroad at an embassy near you, it will be less hassle and helps you get it quickly.

Hello Kumar – Thanks for your prompt reply. Based on your suggestion i was planning to renew my passport in US but if i apply this month it will take atleast 3 weeks to get it back and my travel date is before this 3 weeks. So i cant apply in US till i come back.
I am also looking for option to get it renewed in India as soon as i land there. What will happen if i mention that i was not in India for last 12 months and i will provide my USA address as my present address. In this case will there be any verification carried out on my USA address and India address (Permanent address)?

They may or may not do police verification as per the rule passed last year. Typically, it should take about 2 to 3 weeks to get passport…I am not sure, how much time it may take, if they do verification at both places….Usually, it is very seamless and should be quite fine. You may have to take a chance and apply, there is nothing that is guaranteed to have it in x days, it is always subject to many factors.

Well, they do not renew passport for such reasons. In fact, the visa validity given is not dependent on the expiry of passport. Even, if visa is in expired passport, it is still valid. I have a valid visa issued in my old passport for 10 years, where the expiry was less than 10 years. I used it to travel abroad and had no issues. So, nothing to worry.

I read your question again, I was answering primarily in context of US visa, I overlooked Canada. I just did a quick search and it seems that, they mention that valid visa in an expired passport will work at Port of entry. You may read Canadian Immigration Port of Entry . What I do not know from Canada perspective is that, if they will issue visa like in US beyond expiry of passport. You may search online or speak to customer service. Sorry for the confusion.

They were not aware of the rules that old hand written passport is no longer valid and they may not be allowed to return back. My husband only got a slot to get his submitted application approved at PSK Saligramam center on Apr 9th. The passport officials were in a hurry since the office was about to close and w/o even listening to my husband’s word, they canceled old passport and approved under normal processing. They said he is not eligible for thatkal type. My daughter did not get an appointment on the same day. I’m wondering how long it takes under normal processing for renewal. We’re concerned because return journey is scheduled on Apr 24th. Thanks in advance!

Couple of months ago, my sister applied for new passport and renewal , it took exactly 10 days with police inquiry. It should be around that or even less, just hope for the best.

You will need to carry the original expiring passport and photocopies ( self attested) along with Annexure H, signed by parents. They may ask for some sort of address proof like utility bill, aadhar card, bank statment, phone bill, etc. So, better carry one for backup.

It is suggested that he go for re-issue of the passport abroad at an embassy around there. It is quite easy to do it abroad and he would have ample time. Doing it in India will be tricky as he may be in time crunch and if it gets delayed, it is issue…besides, he would not have any current address proof.

It depends on why your SVP was issued. Unless you see a reason for SVP again, you should apply for re-issue or renewal of the passport using normal process with your documents as in above article. You may speak to customer service for more clarity.

You need to mention your current address, which is your rented house. The rule is that you need to have your current address on the passport, does not matter how long you stay there.

In May 2014 I had made an sworn affidavit for change in name From Venkataraman Natarajan Iyer to Venkataraman Natarajan and also published the same in 2 news papers in local news papers.
Now my Passport is expiring on August 2016 and renew it.
I would like to know whether the same affidavit and the news paper advertisements will be acceptable now for the change in name in the Passport or else have I to go for a fresh process of affidavit and publication in news paper.
In my view, that should work as those were the original forms and news paper advertisements for your name change. You should call the customer service to confirm.

1) My Aadhar card was made in 2011. I downloaded my e-aadhar on 27/March/2016. It has the correct address. Can I use this e-aadhar as a proof to get my passport edited
2) I also have SBI joint account with photo passbook. This account is active but I have made minimal transactions on it, a couple of transaction in 2015 and 2 transactions in 2016. Can I use this passbook as an address proof?

The recommendation is that you will get your current address on passport. if you live at the current address and you want the same to be updated, there should be no issues. if you try to get an old address, then you may run into issues with police report, if they chose to do so…Aadhar card and bank pass book are accepted as long as they are current.

As your passports are within one year before expiry, you can apply for re-issue of passport. You can book an appointment online and go for re-issue of passport. Yes, you may renew in USA or london. But, I am not sure, if that would work for you as you will be on visitor visa / tourist visa. I suggest you get your passport re-issued in India before you leave to avoid any issues in foreign country.
