MS vs MBA in USA – Fees, Funding ? How to Decide ?

This is the second article on MS vs MBA in the USA. If you have not read it, please read the first article:  Should I apply for MS or MBA in the US ? difference ? It talks about the differences between MS vs MBA and what each of the degrees focuses on. In this article, we will look at aspects of funding, fee and other aspects.

Fees  MBA vs MS? Which is cheap? State University Vs Private Schools

MS tuition fee is typically much cheaper than MBA.  Business schools have their own course fee structure. Also, in terms of fees, US State schools fee is always cheaper than Private Schools. For instance, MBA at private school like University of Chicago will cost you ONLY the tuition for NINE MONTHS is $74,919 as of year 2022.

As a non-resident, MBA at a state school like University of Wisconsin will cost you $47,013  for a 9 months for the year 2022.  Also, fees at University of Houston Masters program for MBA is around $1397 per credit in 2022, which comes to $12,573 per semester if you take 9 credits. Not going into specifics, but if you look at MS fees as well, it is cheaper to study in state schools.

The summary is that state schools always have a lesser fee as they are state-funded. For more details, read Cost of MS / MBA in US – Apply for Cheaper Schools

Funding – TA, RA, GA for MBA and MS ?

Funding is a big thing for students and most common types of funding as we have explained are in the form of Teaching Assistantships(TA), Research Assistantship(RA) and Graduate Assistantship(GA). Check the post about what are TA, GA and RA for more info if you do not know with funding info.

Let’s think logically first, MS is more technical and research oriented, logically speaking if the University has more research funding then, there is more funding for MS. On the other hand, MBA, it is not tied very much to research, where do funds come from?  The only source for MBA funding is Fellowships, scholarships, or TAs for Undergrad Business students.

If you notice, for MBA, the research part is almost not there unless you are in Ph.D. Guess what, if you are MBA and applying for funding in Business school,  MS people of Marketing or Finance are competition to you for that too.  So, your option is to work in other departments or have no funding at all.

But for MS, you have many options like working as RA, TA or GA in your department or other department based on your background.  Not only logically, but in reality too, there is less funding for MBA than for MS due to the research focus and other related aspects. You may get in-state tuition in state universities if you stay long enough like year or so and pay taxes in that states by working on a work visa, but in private schools forget about funding…

Should you study MS or MBA? How to decide ?

I know most of you want to be managers and entrepreneurs in future by jumping into MBA right after B.Tech, B.A or B.Com… Let me tell you the truth folks, You will learn very little if you go to MBA without two to three years of work experience. You have to work in an organization setting to fully comprehend and appreciate the full potential of MBA.  For this reason, most of the business schools have a requirement of 3 to 5 years of work experience as a major factor.

Think about this, “if you were never a team member, how will you understand the team member’s problems and their perspective if you were never a team member and directly have become a manager”. So, start at the base and then climb up ! My recommendation is if you are starting your career, then do not go for MBA, work and then go. Read MBA after B.tech or With Work Experience ?. As of MS is concerned, as I said in previous posts there are many types of students who would like to come to the US for education and some for jobs only.  Depending on your situation, you may pick one of the below.

  • Typically, MS is done for anyone with career path of PhD  or research.
  • If you want to do Ph.D. someday and be professor, then MS and PhD integrated program.
  • If you worked for two years, and have money to support your MBA financially, then MBA
  • If you are not sure what you want to do, then take time to think about what you really like and where you see yourself in next 10 years and take a decision on what makes sense for your career path.

Overall, it is up to your passion on where you want to be in the next 10 years, try to do something that will help you get there…it is your decision, plan well and go for your passion… I am not trying to discourage anyone to do MBA right after B.Tech, but just telling you the facts I have learnt.  Good Luck ! Make an informed decision….It is your future !

What are your thoughts ? Anything to add that I have missed ?

Just check out Universities websites of Virgina Tech, Georgia Institute of Technology, etc you will get an idea….or forums like Edulix. Getting job in your technology is a very different ball game… the answer is very relative, some people work in their core field, some have hard time finding jobs, so they switch to IT….

          • They look at your academic classes and sometimes work experience may help…but primarily, you either should have taken that particular class or a class more advanced than that class.

          • Thanks Kumar..
You gave me much helpful information. but I have one more question…sorry for it.
As you said that they look at our academic classes. So, what type of class we need to maintain? I mean is there any other thing other than academic from which they expect good class?
Does the backlogs affect on getting Visa or TA? I m asking this bcoz I have 4 backlogs in my first year but I maintaine my first class.

            waiting 4 ur reply

          • About classes, I will post on article on this in couple days. About backlogs, it depends and hard to say. I know people with 15 backlogs got visa as well as TA too.

        • No. Most of the students that I know of ended taking up jobs in Consulting or IT related careers. It is hard to get jobs in the core field. Campus placements depend on school, they are different from the way it works in India. Salary depends on the position and place. Well, if you go back to India after MS without any experience, it can be hard to get a highly paid job…

    • Yeah, it is tough Payel because lot of people are going back to school in US and there has been funding cuts in school. I do not really recommend someone to do PhD just for the sake of scholarship. Well, if you want to pursue MS, then you would have to be prepared for funding yourself if you do not get funding. it is a tricky decision…

  13. hello!

Really nice post, was searching for such a good comprehensive answer to my question of doing MBA or MS. But my question is most of the good MBA programs need min. of 5-6 years of work experience. I will finish my B.Tech in CS in 2011 and if I go for MS after that, then I don’t have any work experience. How can I go for MBA just after MS? I need to work for another 5 years there before MBA?

Another question, as just after MBA an engineer can almost climb up all the stairs of coders and programmer to top executives. After MS, how much lift can I expect in my career in my industry?

    Reply
    • I do not understand why you want to do MS and then MBA. Decide your goal first. Read this article What is your goal for studying MS in US. I do not think you will get much lift with MS. MS is more technical and you may become an architect or some kind of role more technical. Also, getting MBA does not necessarily guarantee that you will go up the ladder. It depends on your capacity and how you present yourself…

      Reply
      • My aim is to make something innovative and also develop business with that. So you must be agreeing that the knowledge that we got in CS in 4 years is not enough. So, want to first go for MS to learn something good in my field. Then get the managerial edge to start off with my dream. Isn’t it the right planning for my aim?

        Reply
        • Well, it depends on where you do MS because it is more academic…but if you work in industry you learn more practical stuff and what the business need and how they work, it can lead to more innovative thoughts too. My personal choice would be to work in industry for 4 to 5 years and do MBA.

I m terribly confused between MS and MBA.some times i feel MBA and then MS and its keeps on changing for me.I desperately want to put an end to this without regretting later. My profile is BE(CS) at present working in infosys (1 yr experience). My Ultimate goal is a start up a company but i m very much interested in techinical jobs(coding) and it is my strength. If i take MS i get a feeling like MS wouldnt help me much to be an entrepreneur as MBA does. And also i get a feeling like managing is not my strength. Moreover i want to become an technical entrepreneur so i dont know whether to enhance my technical skills ot managing skills now.
“MS and then MBA” can be an option for me but i m not very much interested doing both.Kindly analyse my situation and help me.

    • Prasanna, I think having technical expertise is important to be an entrepreneur in the technology arena. I do not necessarily believe that just getting MS will help the scenario you explain….just working for few more years and learning the technical stuff at your work will help. Getting good technically is not very difficult, you can take certifications and get any training if you need… You may not need to get know stuff like you learn in MS and learning how OS works or how algorithms are written, etc. on the other hand, If managing is not your strength, that’s what you will learn in MBA on how to manage…do not worry about it if it is not your strength now. MBA is a good option for Entrepreneurship and overall big picture of company.

if I have to study, then what should I go for now that I already have MBA degree along with B.Pharm??

I know mine is a bit strange situation but if You could help, it would be really great!!

    • I do not think you need additional qualification to get a job if your University is accredited. Most of my friends who work in US just have B.tech. The point is, if the University you studied is accredited and the degree is recognized, then you should be fine. There are education credential evaluation agencies that may help you to validate this sometimes if the university is unknown. If you have to study, first you check if your degree is recognized, if so then you have to decide what you like to study. If you like research, you can take up Ph.D or if you like something else, you can apply for Masters in that area.

    • Well, my personal opinion and even most others recommend to get 2 to 3 years of work experience before MBA. You have to choose and do the best you can. I was in the similar situation, but convinced my parents to wait until my MBA is over for marriage. Getting masters just for degree is of no use. Even if it takes time, do what you really like and something that can help your career growth as well. You have to use your judgement and pick a choice. Good Luck !

  18. Hey Kumar,
Your article is really great and also clears some of my doubts regarding the decision whether to do MS or MBA. Just want to know your opinion on my profile. Well, I m a fresher & got an admit for MS CS from UFL for fall 2010. but i m also thinking whether staying back here instead and prepare for MBA would be a better option or not…i m confused…few points that i have made are:
    1) UFL ranks around 40…so i cant say that i did my MS from the best university.
    2) as all are saying, after MS i cant go to very high levels in the company hierarchy…..whereas in MBA we already start at a high level…so chances of getting to the top is as good as anything.
    3) some say that MS these days is loosing its shine and in US, companies are reluctant to hire international students for full time (just out of recession). Even in India, MBA weighs almost double than a MTech/MS student (in terms of salary, repo).
4)on the contrary, MBA competition in India is getting tougher and in my opinion, only MBA done from the top 15 colleges is worth it otherwise not. So its not that easy to get a call and then convert it.

Overall I do like programming, but like managing resources, people too (like in my college/home/college organizations)..So i am confused here on what to do now…really couldn’t decide what should be better at the moment.
Also how hard/easy was it for you to switch to MBA mood after you have done your MS. I mean how much feasible it is to MS, then 3 yrs of work and then MBA??

    • Saumya, some of the points you made cannot be denied. If you have not, read these articles first:
      1. Goal of studying MS in US. become Professor or Research ?
      2. Why Study Masters in US ? Just job ?

Getting MS in US without proper goal will be just waste of time. Seems like based on your interest MBA would be a better choice. If you plan for MBA in US, you have to be prepared about very high MBA tuition fee and how you will support yourself. About me, personally I love MBA lot more than MS. It gets very challenging in the beginning to be committed to go back to school after working. If you have the passion, you will do it without any problem !

Have progressed reasonably well at work. But now I am inclined to go back to school again and get the MBA that I always wanted. I am not sure whether I should go for a full-time MBA or a part-time MBA. I am sure that I want to do it from a top tier school. Can you provide your thoughts, experience on this one? • Prasann,
If you want to be an Entrepreneur someday, MBA would be a good place to start with because you acquire the skills needed for managing a company as a business. You do not seem to be interested in coding for a long time, so MBA could be right move to transition to business or leadership roles. Based on your interests, MBA seems more logical and fits your needs well. Put down your goals and just weight them against your interests adding MBA and MIS and then take a more logical decision that fits your interests.

If you want to work in Marketing in future too, then you may need to do MS in Marketing as you already have MBA or if you think you did not learn much in your first MBA, then you may apply for MBA. Or you can also apply for PhD if you have research in mind. As I said in above article it depends on state or private Universtiy. Read this : Cost of MS or MBA in USA. How to apply for cheaper Schools Depending on the school they have one year MBA or if you do not join cohort group, you can always take more classes and get it done in one year too, it is worth trying… GMAT is the usually preferred one everywhere for MBA, GRE is accepted too in many schools. But please can i have your email id?I guess u need to clear out my doubts on that.Mine is dev_sood2000@yahoo.com

  24. Sir,thanks for the article. But please help me out if you can..i completed my B.com last year and currently i am pursuing CA….but i am more interested in studying abroad (preferably US/UK) and that too in the field of management.
Now what i wanted to ask u is i know u got to have some job experience for MBA…which obviously i don’t have…so please suggest…should i do my Masters in management from “abroad”…and gain some work exp and then apply for MBA?
The reason is that i don’t think i would be able to get a better experience after courses like M.com or something like that and that too in a field of management.
The other question is will my Articleship done under a CA be counted as work experience?

    Reply
    • Divyank, I am not very much familiar with articleship as I am from different background. It is preferred to have work experience and then apply for MBA in US. Joining another masters in India is not going to help you with work experience. Just try to find a job and work for one to two years, in the mean time prepare for GMAT and then apply… The whole point of having work experience is to get a feel of being a team member and also see various business, management related issues…

    • HI kumar sir and diviyank ,
I have searched all portal relating to accounting to the extent possible .For CA Student Best option is either MBA Or CPA. As per CA insttute new rule, u are allowed to pursue only one course .If u study fulltime MBA ur articleship wil not be counted .Better check with Institute whether ur firm has foreign franchises in overseas for transferring ur articleship .

    • Shandini, To work in US, you need to find a company that can sponsor you H1B visa. It is very hard unless it is a global company or you do it through some consulting company. I will write an article on this topic…stay tuned.

    Waiting for ur reply.

  26. Also do tell me, which exam is easier to prepare and give- GMAT or GRE, for MBA?
Also, how can you differentiate between Private Schools and State Universities, from a list of universities given?

    • It depends…people say, GMAT is a little harder… If you go the University website, it says the info that it is a state funded school.

Next time, post questions in FORUM.

  27. Also, do tell me about the list of top universities of the world which offer higher degrees in both core subjects (related to telecommunications field) and management, together. As well as top unis for MBA and top unis for Masters. Inderjot.

  28. I am Inderjot Kaur, female, native from India. I did my schooling from Kuwait. Then went to India to pursue my Btech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. And now I’m back to Kuwait, doing Training in one of the firms in Kuwait.

I really wanted to know that i’m totally confused whether to pursue MS or an MBA degree from US or Canada. As which of these will provide me with better job opportunities and make me a successful person in life so that i become famous like Indra Nooyi and many others in this world.

    Awaiting your reply.

  32. Hey Kumar,
That was an enlightening article. Well, I am into Electrical Designing of transformers since an year now, and I love working on core subjects. But at the same time I have always felt that I have some inclination towards managing people, company operations etc. To end up at some managerial position which requires technical knowledge what courses should I undergo. Thanks a tonne!!

    • Welcome ! You really need a mixture of Management and Engineering degree. Just an example, Univ of Missouri Rolla offers a program called Engineering Management which teaches you both core subjects and management. Check the school website for information : http://emse.mst.edu/ Sample program : http://emse.mst.edu/academic_programs/MS_Eng_Mgt.html

    • MBA is probably a better choice. It is a good idea to work couple years or more before MBA. If you have not, read this : http://redbus2us.com/when-should-you-do-mba-directly-after-b-tech-or-work-and-then/

    • Puneet, In fact, you should not study a course or degree because it is good or excellent. You should pick your passion and do what you like to do in future and then study what you want. 38. Hey Kumar,
The article has been really helpful, thanks buddy! Its not easy to find proper guidance for confused ppl like me,i think i am on the right place now.

Kumar,i was planning to go for MS in 2k11(Sept season),by that time i’ll have work exp of 2.5 years(I have done B.E(C.S)…worked as Design and development Engg in TATA ELXSI for 10 months, presently outsourced to TCS ),i dont have any problems with the coding part but i was more interested into the designing phase of the project’s life cycle.I also have inclination towards business/management part,in future i want to start my own business/company,only thing that scares me about MBA is,i am not sure how i well i’ll do in the “subjects” of MBA course and secondly,i might always have a feeling that i could have done better in MS!

All in all,i am not very sure what i should do.Any suggestion would be of great help! Thanks!

    • Welcome ! It seems to me, you are having wrong perception of MBA that it is very hard and subjects are hard. I have been doing MBA for almost one and half years and I do not find it difficult. It just takes time to learn, understand and apply to projects. NO Need to by heart anything. It is more about application of business concepts and I absolutely love studying MBA classes. I learn so much everyday. You study about why some business do some things and why some do not. Lets say, for example ” What is Walmart’s business strategy ? Why did starbucks succeed, What is unique about McDonald, etc ” . It is very intriguing to learn why businesses succeed and what concepts they used to succeed. If you plan to start a business one day, you will need this kind of information for learning and starting a good business. You need to know what are the best strategies for success of a business. Some are born with business acumen, some learn by doing courses like MBA. Hope it helps.

  39. Thanks for info.I can’t look for any other university. So what do you think??
Should i go for MS in CS with specialization ‘Business’.
I checked the link you have mentioned above. Many of those courses i have already studied in Operational Research.
In b/w if possible can you tell us what’s the procedure to fetch a good job in US?
    Is it something like this?
    written—>group discussion—>technical(interview)—->hr(interview)

    Reply
    • You are welcome ! Yes, thats correct you might have taken some classes in Operational research. I did look at the program info of IIT http://www.iit.edu/csl/cs/programs/grad/mcs_bus.shtml and it is looks good for Business Analyst kind of positions, you will learn the business side of things. It completely depends and I have not seen anyone having a group discussion or written test. Sometimes, there is written test, but not necessarily. I already have written a complete Article on one of the options , Check it out : How to find a Consulting Job in US, get H1B visa, interview, etc I will do a post on How to look for a full time job, later. • Ankit, If you want to be a Business Analyst, the career progression for you is do something related to Business. It is usually tied up as MIS (Management Information Systems) Check out a sample MIS program curriculum at one of the Universities. http://www.cob.fsu.edu/mis/mmis_curriculum.cfm Regarding Scope, I will have to do a separate post on this Business Analyst role. Well, about senior position, it depends on your skill and how you present yourself. For instance, if you work in University as a Network Admin, you can add that as your work experience and apply for higher positions. Hope this helps,

  41. Hi Kumar,

I have done B.E.(2008 passout). Currently, I am working in an IT company as a programmer(SAP-ABAP) and have work experience of almost 1.5 yrs…I am confused about to go for MBA/MS. I’ll go for MBA/MS after 1.5/2 yrs(1.e after havin work exp. of 3.5/4 yrs).I am not much interested in the technical stuffs(coding). What would u suggest, to go for MBA/MS? I also have a thought of doing MBA and come back in SAP field as a functional folk. plz suggest…

    Regards,
    Nirav

    Reply
    • Nirav, based on your interest, i.e., not interested in technical stuff, I would recommend you to come to US for MBA. Also, what you said is true. MBA will help you become an SAP functional person after you are done with MBA. Only thing you have to focus is to plan for MBA tuition.
      Hope it helps,

i want to do my masters in database management can u tell some good universities in usa..? and can u even tell me whether db is having any scope…?

    Reply
    • Sneha, Firstly, I do not want to suggest you anything without proper data. Sorry, I do not have enough information about Schools to suggest you. Second thing, about scope, in MS too you have core courses and electives, just your electives are based on Database systems. It does not completely make you a database expert without having work experience in that field. I think Database always have good demand, check this article about the mean salary and future prospects. http://redbus2us.com/2010/01/it-jobs-in-usa-for-making-big-money-it-career-prospects-with-median-salary-and-job-growth-projections.html
Also, usually Database jobs are intense with work on weekends and require more experience.

    • Harini, Any work experience is good. The main goal of work experience is to understand the team setting and being a team member. You will be required to take the foundations courses of finance, accounting, marketing and may be statistics because your bachelors is not business related. If you need more or have any further questions, please post a detailed question in the FORUM http://www.redbus2us.com/forum/
