USCIS Online H1B Case Status Meaning – Detailed Screenshots

If you applied for an H1B transfer or you were picked in the H1B Registration Lottery and applied for H1B petition in the recent H1B Visa 2024  season, you may have received a case receipt notice. When you check the H1B Case Status online, you may see various statuses like “Case Was Received”, “Name was updated”, etc.. You may not fully understand each of these status meaning. This article is meant to clarify each of those H1B Case Status meaning and give a complete flow of the same.

H1B Registration Beneficiary Confirmation Number Cannot be used for Tracking

If you were picked in the H1B Registration Lottery, the registration selection notice would have a Beneficiary Confirmation Number. You cannot use that number to track your H1B on USCIS website.

That number is only for internal reference and to run the lottery. The USCIS case number has a certain format and the beneficiary confirmation number does not follow that as well. So, do not try to check online on USCIS website and be confused.

H1B Case Receipt Number – Check Online

After an applicant is selected in H1B Registration Lottery, the company or H1B sponsor need to file an H1B Petition with USCIS using form I-129. After the H1B petition is properly filed, USCIS would send out a H1B receipt notice to the employer/ attorney indicating that the application was properly filed on time. The H1B Receipt notice would have a case number and it can be used to track the status of the H1B petition. You can check article : How to Check USCIS Case Status online that covers the details on how you can track case status at  USCIS.gov case status website

What’s the H1B Case Number?  Processing ?

The H1B receipt number is a 13 character alphanumeric string that is given by USCIS. It typically starts with EAC or WAC. You may read Understanding H1B Case Number Details, to know more info.  For high level understanding of how each H1B petition is processed at USCIS, you should read the article H1B processing steps at USCIS adjudication center.

Also, in the past, USCIS used to assign many statuses like Acceptance, Initial Review, Decision, Post Decision Activity, etc.  Some of these have been changed with the new system this year. To get an idea of the past flow and statuses, you may read H1B Old Case Statuses and Flow.  Below information corresponds to the latest H1B statuses available on USCIS website for a H1B petition.

Various H1B Case Statuses on USCIS website

Below are the various Case Status that you usually find on USCIS website, when you Check Case Status on USCIS website.

  • Case Was Received and A Receipt Notice Was Emailed
  • Case Was Received
  • Request for Additional Evidence Notice was mailed
  • Response to USCIS’ Request for Evidence Was Received
  • Case Was Approved And My Decision Was Emailed
  • Case Was Approved
  • Decision Notice Mailed
  • Error : The application Receipt Number is invalid
  • Name was updated.
  • Fees will be Refunded
  • Withdrawal Acknowledgement Notice Was Sent
  • Case Was Transferred and a New Office has Jurisdiction.

Let us look at each of them in detail

H1B Case Status Text – Form I-129 Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker

If you notice any of the H1B statuses’ text below, all of them would say “Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker”. The reason is that, when you file a H1B petition with USCIS, you would use form I-129, thats why you see the status text to indicate the form number. USCIS does not explicitly tell H1B Visa petition in the status as the form I-129 is also used for other visa types as well. It can be confusing, if they put in all visa types in there, so USCIS intentionally does not put in H1B in there and only indicates the form type. Your receipt notice would have “Class Requested” as show in below screenshot, indicating it was a H1B petition.

Case Was Received and A Receipt Notice Was Emailed

USCIS emails receipt notices to petitioners, if they filed their H1B petition under premium processing.  The H1B case status “Case was Received and a Receipt Notice was Emailed” indicates to us that the petition with this case number was filed under premium processing with USCIS. A receipt notice with case number and details about processing was sent to the email of the attorney/ employer. Below is the screenshot for the described status.

USCIS : Case Was Received and A receipt Notice Was Emailed Status
H1B Case Status – Case Was Received and a Receipt Notice was Emailed

Case Was Received

USCIS only emails receipt notices for premium processing applications. For H1B petitions filed under regular processing, USCIS will send out the receipt notices via traditional Mail/ Post.  The H1B case status “Case Was Received” indicates is that the petition with this case number was filed under regular processing and USCIS has received the same. The receipt notice hard copy will be sent to the attorney/ employer’s postal address on how it will be processed. Check below for screenshot of the described case status.

Request for Additional Evidence Notice was mailed

If USCIS wants more information on a H1B petition, they will ask for the same information. The H1B case status “Request for Additional Evidence Notice was mailed” status indicates the same that USCIS wants more info. As part of the adjudication process of the H1B petition, the USCIS adjudicator of this petition, with this particular case number, needs more information to make a decision on the case. The adjudicator issued a Request for Additional Evidence notice, which is commonly called as RFE (Request for Evidence).

The employer/ attorney will get an RFE notice from USCIS indicating what documents they need to submit for further processing the case.  It has an expiry date and employer/ attorney has to respond to that request by that date. USCIS will NOT process this particular case until they receive a response from the employer/ attorney with the requested information.  Below is the screenshot of described status.

H1B Case Status - Request for Additional Evidence Notice Was Mailed

Response to USCIS’ Request for Evidence Was Received

After USCIS receives a response to the RFE, they will update the same in their online system for the H1B case. This H1B Case status “Response to USCIS Request for Evidence Was Received” corresponds to the same. All the status tells us is that USCIS has received the response for the issued RFE Notice on the particular case with that case number from the employer/ attorney.

The response from employer/ attorney could be either documents or any other supporting material that was requested by USCIS supporting the H1B petition. If your petition is in this status, it means that USCIS will start processing the case as they have received requested documentation. The status also tells the petitioner that when you can expect a decision/ update on this case. Check below screenshot for RFE response status.

Case Was Approved And My Decision Was Emailed

Usually, if you file in premium, you would informed by email. This H1B case status “Case was approved and my decision was emailed” indicates the decisions of approval that is sent by email to the attorney/ employer. This case status only appears for the H1B petitions filed under premium processing. Below is the screenshot of the status.

H1B Case Status - Case was approved and my decision was emailed

Case Was Approved

The H1B case status “Case was approved” is self explanatory. It tells that the the H1B petition with this particular case number was approved and they plan to send out the approval notice to the employer/ attorney by traditional post/mail. This case status appears only for petitions filed under regular processing.

Decision Notice  Mailed

Not every H1B Application gets approved.  Typically USCIS will issue an RFE and then review the evidence before making the final decision. If USCIS is not convinced with your petition’s supporting documents, they will deny the H1B petition and the case status will be shown as ” Decision Notice Mailed”. Your employer will get a notice indicating why the petition was denied and they can act on it as per the instructions, if they want to challenge the decision by providing additional documents, etc.  Below is how it looks.

The application Receipt Number is invalid

Error H1B Case Status entry on USCIS website
Error H1B Case Status entry on USCIS website

If you do not enter a valid 13 character H1B case receipt number, USCIS case status website will give you the above error message saying that the application receipt number is invalid. All it means is that, either you have taken the receipt number wrong from your employer or entered it wrong in the box…or maybe your employer did not give you the correct case number.  Below is the error screenshot.

Name Was Updated

This is one of the very confusing statuses that USCIS online system gives, when there is some activity happening on your case. The H1B Case status “Name Was Updated” can be very confusing and misleading everyone at times. It may be genuine that the name was updated due to a clerical error, but not always the case.

It definitely means that some activity is happening on your case and your case is being worked on by USCIS.  There is a perception among users that this status will lead to rejection/ RFE, but it is not necessarily true.  So, when you see something like this status, it is best consult your employer/attorney to check further on your case. No need to panic or get confused.  It looks like below

H1B Case Status - Name was Updated
H1B Case Status – Name was Updated

Fee will be Refunded Status

One of the others status some of the H1B petitioners see is that ‘Fee will be refunded’. What it means is that the employer/attorney has filed extra fees that is not required and USCIS is refunding the same. It can be for a host of reasons related to the H1B fees. As you can see below USCIS would tell that it will not impact the processing of the case, so do not panic when you see this, work with your employer, it will be fine.

H1B Case Status - Fee will be Refunded
H1B Case Status – Fee will be Refunded

Withdrawal Acknowledgement Notice Was Sent

If your H1B employer plans to withdraw your H1B petition or for some reason you believe that you do not want to work for the company and resigned the job, then your employer would withdraw your H1B petition from USCIS. It is not really automatic process, your employer has to request for it. If your H1B case number indicates the below status “Withdraw Acknowledgement Notice was Sent” for I-129 petition, then it means that your H1B was withdrawn by your employer and USCIS is acknowledging the same with the status.

H1B Case Status - Fee will be Refunded

Case Was Transferred And a New Office Has Jurisdiction

Depending on the load of H1B petitions received and processing times at any service center, they are moved to different locations to expedite processing or balance the overall processing loads. If your H1B case was transferred to different location for some of these reasons, you would see a status like below. It tells the date when the petition was transferred and when you can expect a physical copy of notice indicating the same. It does not really change anything in terms of how it is adjudicated, it is just for processing times balancing, nothing to worry.

  1. — Case Was Approved —

On September 17, 2019, we approved your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number —————–. We sent you an approval notice. Please follow the instructions in the notice.

If you do not receive your denial notice by October 2, 2019, please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

My case status says case was approved and followed by saying if you do not received denial notice.

Not sure if it is a mistake with uscis site. Mine was initially regular and later on converted to premium.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks,

    • Well, it could be a system issue…not sure, in general, that’s how it should show…with the premium processing suspended, maybe it is temporary. Check with your attorney.

  8. Hi Kumar and anyone in the same boat,
As I requested, my boss has asked his attorney to withdraw the petition in late December instead of responding to a lengthy RFE before the Jan deadline in 2019.

However, when I checked my case status online, it says:
Response To USCIS’ Request For Evidence Was Received
On December 31, 2018, we received your response to our Request for Evidence for your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number WAC181XXXXXX. Our California Service Center office will begin working on your case again. We will mail you a decision or notify you if we need something from you. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

I am surprised that it didn’t state that they received the request for the withdrawal of my Form I-129. Is this common? Would there be another change of response to “Withdrawal Notice was sent” later?

I certainly wouldn’t want a denial notice when the petition had been withdrawn.

    Reply
    • Well, it could be a system glitch. It should say something like “Withdrawal Acknowledgment Notice was sent”…check with your attorney or wait for the hard copy.

  9. Hi,

What does it mean when the status says “RFE Response has been received” similar to the screenshot above but there is no expected processing date?

I know that premium processing has been suspended since September but my petition was filed in July under premium processing and I’m afraid that they will refund me the processing fee / take longer to process.

    Thank you!

    • Yes, there is no expected processing date. All it tells is that USCIS got your RFE docs. They may…ask your attorney or employer to follow up with USCIS.

      • That is normal time nowadays. I guess many people from Feb 2018 are yet to get updates on their cases. It may take few more months for your case too. Have patience.

Once your case is approved you will get approved I 797 which is mandatory for interview. You just need to wait till you get your notice approved.
        Good Luck

  10. Hi..
I have applied for h1b this year(2018) from India through a consultancy which is US based. They have sent me the RFE document with EAC number printed wrong. Will that be possible? I was skeptical now on the consultancy genuinity. Can you please tell me if someone faced similar issue or heard this type of issue.

    Thanks

    • Well, all your documents should have same number. It is unlikely that the number would change. If your receipt notice has a number, that will carry along for RFE too. Ask them to send copies of both and you can check the case number on USCIS website to verify the same.

Can some one clarify what might be the difference between the 2 statuses.

BTW I didn’t get any confirmation that my visa processing was changed to Premium.

  20. I filed for the motion to reopen because my adjustment of status was denied when they did not received on of my RFE requested ( Visa Screen). The lawyer in charge of my case said their office sent it out with the other RFE’s but it got lost ( I don’t know how that is possible). We sent out the document with the filing fee and received the I-797 that it was received by USCIS. However, when I check it online, this appears:

    Validation Error(s)
You must correct the following error(s) before proceeding:

My Case Status does not recognize the receipt number entered. Please check your receipt number and try again. If you need further assistance, please call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283.

Is it something that I need to be worried about? It’s been more than 3 weeks and still has not shown anything in the USCIS website. Anyone out there who had the same circumstances that their one of RFE’s documents got lost in the mail and filed for MTR? How long did it take for USCIS to make a decision? I have an EAD until May 2017 and I have 2 dependents. Are we out of status already or the EAD is still valid while we are waiting for the decision for the MTR? A little input is highly appreciated.

I searched in Google for the same issue and someone posted that there is a DHS account where they are updating cases.

  22. RFE response and PP were submitted together for me on Nov 16th but i could see only “Response To USCIS’ Request For Evidence Was Received” status in USCIS. There is no mention of PP in case history too.

What will be the usual status if both RFE response and PP submitted together? Is there a way to know if they are processing my case as Premium ?

    Reply
    • @DC For Premium processing request, you would have mailed a check. Has it been en cashed? If yes, then your case is already in PP and a receipt notice for the PP acceptance would have been sent to your Attorney. So please check for the status of check and the receipt notice with Attorney. If there is no positive update in this, I think they could have misplaced your PP request in USCIS. In this scenario, please ask your Attorney to call USCIS and check on this.
It is always recommended to send RFE response first and then PP request after the status has been updated to RFE response to reduce such confusions.
      All the best!

If yes how did you deal with it.

    • Yes this is something we saw this time when RFE response was sent along with PP. If you re send the response, your status would get updated correctly and you would see some progress. Good luck!

        • Recently we do see loads of applications getting further questions on submitting the response for the previous RFE. It is at the discretion of USCIS, they can ask any number of further questions before approving a petition.

Response To USCIS’ Request For Evidence Was Received

On November 7, 2017, we received your response to our Request for Evidence for your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number WACXXXXXXXXX. Our California Service Center office will begin working on your case again. We will mail you a decision or notify you if we need something from you. • You can verify whether the check which was sent for Premium processing has been en cashed or not. If it was en cashed then your case has been upgraded to PP. On the other hand, if PP has been accepted an email is sent to your Attorney with a receipt notice. So you can check whether your Attorney has received the same.
If both has not happened, it means your case is still in normal processing. If you are sure that premium processing request was sent then please ask your Attorney to follow it up with USCIS ASAP. Good luck!

  26. Hi guys,

Could you please give some pieces of advice. I got RFE at the end of August and answered at the begin of October. The October 10-th my case status was changed to: “Correspondence Was Received And USCIS Is Reviewing It”.

What does it mean? This is the same that “RFE response was received”?
And how much time can it take us to get the response from USCIS this year (regular not premium)?

    Cheers!

      • Hi h1bwaiting,

No 🙁 After that we submitted my RFE Response, but the status was not changed… It has been in this status since start of October. I don’t know what to think 🙁

        • It seems this year the USCIS is taking longer than usual to respond to the applications. The online statuses too aren’t updated quickly.
My cheque for premium processing was cashed on 12th January, still waiting to hear from those guys.
Its been 15 calender days already.
My advice is check with your attorney for the pending update. He can send an enquiry to the USCIS.

  27. Hi,

Today my H1B status got changed to “Decision Notice Mailed”, It means my case got denied? If it’s denied we have any other steps for process again for this case? Please advice

    Reply
    • I am sorry to hear that. You will have to wait for the denial notice(Contains denial reason) and then file MTR if you have strong documentation to challenge the decision. MTR is quite a slow process and can take longer time for decision. But if you are confident, you can definitely opt for it. All the best for your future endeavors.

  28. Hi,
when I am tracking my case, my status is showing ”

    Document Was Returned To USCIS

On October 11, 2017, the Post Office returned your document to us. We will hold your document for 180 days or until April 9, 2018. Please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request that we resend the document to you. If you do not submit an online request by April 9, 2018, we will destroy your document and you will need to file a new Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, with fee. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

Could you please tell me whether it is approved or not.

    • Hello,

How can they receive your rfe on April, 11th 2017, when they actually made the draw on that very date. USCIS usually takes time to even send you RFE?
Can you please elaborate your case.

  31. Hello Friends,

I need your help on this. On June 9th, I got this status
Request for Additional Evidence Was Mailed
On June 9, 2017, we mailed a request for additional evidence for your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number EAC171455xxxx. The request for evidence explains what we need from you. We will not take action on your case until we receive the evidence or the deadline to submit it expires. Please follow the instructions in the request for evidence. If you do not receive your request for additional evidence by July 9, 2017, please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request a copy. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

And it’s been the same since that day. I have mailed my employer many times to send the RFE, but everytime I get the same reply that attorneys are working on them. Somebody told me that they usually give 3 months time to receive their evidence and after that they decide. I’ve been very tensed since in few days those 3 months will be completed. Please suggest what should I do?

  33. My previous employer applied for my H1 and it got picked and the status was ‘Case was received’. I had to find a new employer and now the application status is ‘Request for Additional Information’. Will my being laid off affect my application?
What should be my next step?

    Reply
    • Now your previous employer has to respond to the RFE issued. Please talk to your previous employer and check what they are planning to do. If you are laid off already, they might think to withdraw the petition rather than answering it as they might feel they will never use the petition. If its withdrawn, you can never use this petition again. If the RFE is not responded within the deadline, it would be rejected by USCIS. Kindly talk to your previous employer ASAP and take a favorable decision.

      • Thank you for your reply.
My previous employer had agreed earlier to get it approved, so that I can use it for my new employer. Should I continue the application with the previous employer or provide information about my new employer to USCIS ? Which way are the chances of it getting approved ?

        Reply
        • Right now better to go with previous employer and get it approved. After its approval, you can transfer it to your new employer. At this stage, you cannot transfer your visa to new employer too.

  37. I received my I797A (H1B Approval Notice) on June 28th 2017. The date ‘Notice Date’ on the notice in June 8th 2017. It says my COS will occur on Oct 1st 2017 and also the finish date is mentioned.

Everything looks fine in I797A but my case status on USCIS website is still following:

    • Yes, this is happening for many cases this year. The online status is not reflecting the actual status of the case. If you have the approval notice in hand, then the online status is no longer relevant to you. Congrats on your approval!

        • When filing your I-765, did you request for any fees waiver? This status means your fees has been waived. Did you get the notice as stated in this status?
if your answer is no for all this, please call the USCIS customer care and check with them.

    • Hello, My H1B got denied for first time and the reason said by them is no evidence submitted, though we submitted. Went for Lawsuit and Litigation attorney works with USCIS attorney.

Week back I see the case was re-open for reconsideration and same day after 110 mins it changes to RFE.

After 3 days of RFE, I got one more message the the case was Re-open (but online it says same day of 1st message and RFE). it means same day 3 status.

Employer got the RFE, but after he received the RFE only the message got to me says case was reopened. what does that mean?

On May 31, 2017, we received your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number LIN1709xxxxx, at your local office.

How can I know which office ( Vermont/California) it was sent to ? It was filled in Nebraska service center in 06FEB2017.

    • Hi Nimesh,

The above status means that your case has been transferred from one SERVICE CENTRE to another may be due to the heavy load of work. Like it might have been transferred from CALIFORNIA SERVICE CENTRE to VERMONT SERVICE CENTRE. Nothing to worry about it.

      Regards,

    • Your friend,

This could mean anything. So I would not speculate and wait for attorney to receive the notice. In the past this status has meant both approval and denial.

      • Thanks for your response, Saurabh. But based on my understanding which is also supported by the screenshots above, whenever its an approval, RFE or denial, the case status clearly state that, right? So why is there an ambiguity in this case?

Tisha, No – my attorney hasn’t received anything until today. My status changed from “Case received” to this one on May 11. It’s been two weeks since then!!
