What is the H1B Visa 2019 season start date ?
Update : USCIS will start accepting H1B Petitions starting from April 2nd, 2018 as per their official update on their website. In general, USCIS starts accepting applications for the next fiscal year exactly 6 months before the start of the next fiscal year. USCIS fiscal year for 2019 starts from 1st October 2018, which means they should accept applications for FY 2019 from April 1st, 2018. As April 1st is a Sunday, USCIS should accept applications for H1B 2019 season from April 2nd, 2019.

What is H1B visa 2019 Quota for Regular and Masters filings ?
As of the date of writing of article, the H1B quota is as below. This is also called the H1B Visa Cap. You can read more at What is H1B Cap ? Regular vs Masters quota ?

  • H1B Regular Quota : 65,000 visas
  • H1B Master’s Quota : 20,000 visas. ( only US Masters eligible)

Also, of the overall 85,000 visa cap, every year 6,800 visas are set aside for the citizens of Singapore and Chile as part of the Free Trade Agreement with them. There were few bills part of Comprehensive Immigration Reform that are not active in Senate that were proposed from Obama administration days to change the cap count to 110,000 and Masters to 25,000, including potential to make H1B cap extend up to 180,000. But nothing has moved and all are dormant. Nothing new has been proposed by the new Trump Administration regarding changing cap count. Will there be Lottery for H1B 2019 season ? Lottery Predictions ? Filing Numbers ?
Update : USCIS had lottery for FY 2019 quota and received 190,098 petitions.
Looking at the historical trend of H1B filings, cap reach dates, it is quite possible that we would have lottery for FY 2019 quota.  We have written a detail article looking at historical data, Trump administration new policies like ‘Buy American, Hire American’, students on OPT, H4 EAD removal rule, etc. factors. To know the prediction numbers and details, read the article:  H1B Visa 2019 Lottery Predictions – Analysis, Graphs .

When is H1B Visa 2019 Lottery Date ?
Update : USCIS Conducted Lottery for FY 2019 on April 11, 2018.
There are two things, one is when the H1B petitions are accepted for the lottery and second is when the actual lottery is done. H1B visa petitions for next fiscal year would be accepted by USCIS from April 2nd, 2018 for 5 working days until April 6th, 2018 to be part of the lottery. Now, the actual lottery date depends on various factors depending the volume of petitions and USCIS load. It can be anywhere in second week of April. For FY 2018, the actual H1B Lottery was done on April 11th, 2017 . We can expect anywhere around the same date like April 11th or April 13th.

How to find H1B visa 2019 Sponsors ?
It can be very hard to find a good employer and convince them to sponsor H1B to work in US with major unknown like H1B Visa lottery. Anyways, you would be in one of the three scenarios, if you are seeking a H1B Sponsor.

  • F1 Student in US : You can find an internship or co-op at an employer who can sponsor H1B visa and ask them to sponsor your H1B. You can continue to work on OPT once you graduate as well. You find the list of H1B Sponsoring companies using the tool
  • International Professionals  : If you are outside of US, it can be tricky with all the latest rules by Trump administration. Your best bet is to find an multi-national company ( MNC) and work through them to sponsor H1B visa. You may have hurdles inside the company with all the internal process, many waiting, etc. But, it is up to you to negotiate and ask them to take a chance. Many try the IT body shop route, where they ask them to file H1B. Rules have changed in the last few years and it is very risky move and can jeopardize your US hopes. Read comments on this H1B Companies Reviews article  to get an idea and  beware of such consulting companies to avoid fraud.
  • Important Note : We, as RedBu2US, DO NOT Provide any H1B sponsorship or guide anyone using professional services or fee. If anyone approaches you by saying our name, it is pure FRAUD…beware !

  1. All, I haven’t read through all the comments yet regarding the SEVP Portal but I have something to share of my own. I just checked my own status and it shows that in the history tab I have two new entries from SEVIS on 04/13/2018 saying Employment Authorization. One of the dates have changed from 08/31/2018 to 09/30/2018, which basically mean my STEM Ext which was going to expire on 08/31/2018 has been extended in CAP GAP till 09/30/2018 which makes total sense. It is somewhat a good news but lets see if I get the receipt number anytime soon. What do you guys think?
P.S. I am a third timer as well.

    • Also as a follow-up, I just noticed that my Active STEM has been adjusted to show CAP GAP in the Employment tab. Meaning my Active STEM dates are now from 09/01/2016 – 09/30/2018 instead of 09/01/2018 – 08/31/2018(how it was before). Hope this helps someone and also all the all the valid and true applications get selected this time, hopefully including mine.

Really hope it means good news for you! I’m noticing a trend; the few people who saw the update on SEVP and I chatted with all have a master’s degree. If someone here has seen the update on your SEVP and you don’t have a master’s degree, please share with us?! I guess knowing would help us figure out when to start packing the bags…

  2. Hi, Any idea when we shall get the notification from the GM team ? On the lottery results. hope we will have in batches. Last year it started from 27th April to 6th May.

  5. I find it surprising and shocking that all of the people that have received update to SEVP portal belong to first time OPT filers.

Not a single STEM OPT has confirmed update to his SEVP portal.

    It is so sad.

    • What if a student is on 12-month OPT ending e.g. in June 2018 but also has applied for STEM extension? In that case, would there be an update in SEVP portal extending current OPT to 09/30? Are there any cases like this who had an update? My STEM extension shows up as “FUTURE STEM” on SEVP portal, with start date in June 2018 and until June 2020. I wonder if my current OPT would be extended in SEVP portal if I were selected in the lottery.

      Reply
      • The ones that have had updates to SEVP are cases like yours.

Since ones that posted had OPT expiring between June and August, I am sure they would have also applied for extension.

        Reply
        • I’m not sure about that. Not everyone is eligible to apply for STEM extension, and the person who posted a screenshot of their SEVP portal had not applied for STEM extension, since there was no “FUTURE STEM” entry on the screenshot.

          Reply
          • Looks like your case of STEM OPT was approved and you wouldn’t qualify for a cap gap because you have valid employment authorization beyond September.

So, you are good. You will directly received a receipt if you were picked.

            Good luck !

    • Actually my STEM extension has not been approved yet. I just submitted my application 2 weeks ago. It showed up as FUTURE STEM on SEVP portal as soon as the DSO entered the STEM OPT request in SEVIS.

    • Seriously I don’t think we can see any update in SEVP Portal. Else v could have seen a handful of people posting here that they got an update in SEVP Portal. I’m pretty sure that it gets updated only after u request for Cap Gap from ur school and they issue an I-20. Just think. It’s Employment. It shows up the list of work authorizations you have and which employer u r working under. Even if u get picked up in LOTTERY, then still, u don’t have work authorization until u get a Cap Gap I-20 issued. So. V can’t c any update in the portal my ourselves. I was thinking v can check the SEVIS status. But there is no option for that

      Reply
      • My DSO specifically told me cap gap happens automatically in SEVIS after you’re selected in the lottery. Requesting or not requesting new I-20 has no impact on this change in SEVIS.

        Reply
      • Thank you. I seriously doubt we will see an update there. Because I guess Sevp clearly states that only the school authorities can still let me know about my SEVIS status. And this SEVP portal is just for ease of reporting change of address and change of employment. So basically, if you request your school for Cap Gap and they issue it, the information would appear in the SEVP portal. I don’t think v can see any change in SEVP portal by ourselves

  12. Why can’t USCIS provide a way to check if a candidate is selected in lottery or not. As they have all the data its an easy task for them. At least people would not be living in hopes still june. Neither we have to check with attorney/employer. Truly a worst system ever saw.

    Reply
    • Government agencies usually have budget restrict and are usually under budget. They’d have to implement a new system to do this which would take time and money. This wasn’t an issue before lottery system started and the plan for the future is to make it merit based and not have a lottery so no point implementing one now. Lottery was meant to be a temporary solution until the new process can be implemented.

  13. Hey guys. My school DSO had sent me a link to create a SEVP Portal account. So when I used that, I entered my SEVIS ID and it prompted me to create a password and I gave a password and confirmed the same. After that, I received a success message. Now when I try to log in, it requires me to enter my email & password to log in. I was not asked to enter my email when I registered. So when I tried logging in with my university email id, it doesn’t allow me to log in. Did anyone else encounter this situation? Please do help me out with the same.

    • What email ID did you give in your OPT application? Use that. Also, in our case university email ID could be written in two different formats:

      universityID@XYZ.UNIV NAME.edu and firstname.lastname@UNIVNAME.edu

I use the latter for all application purposes, so if you have two formats try both.

    • Yeah, I am not sure if these are true or just everyone is guessing that employment tab will reflect changes? Can anyone share screenshot if they saw changes,

      Reply
      • Initially everyone was assuming based on information provided in SEVIS update. Now, people are actually seeing it. I don’t see a change yet and many others don’t. It’s just for a few people.

        Reply
        • Thanks Anxious.

Yeah, I only saw two people posting they saw the changes. But many people are saying its fake news, as only DSOs are authorized to make any changes to your SEVIS.

Unless someone was so lucky that on the first day of lottery, they were issued receipt notices, and DSOs were so quick to go and put that into SEVIS, the chances of happening are quite low. Also, as mentioned on SEVP webiste, it takes around 24 hours to reflect any changes made.

Lets see what happens, everyone is eagerly waiting for the results.

          Good luck!

          Reply
          • @RT – DSOs do not make any end date changes in SEVIS. After the student is picked in lottery, the change in OPT end date happens automatically in SEVIS (after USCIS does the data entry). Updates from SEVIS are then automatically updated in SEVP once a day. The two updates you mention occurred on Friday and the lottery happened on Wednesday so this does not seem very unbelievable. I agree that we do not have enough reports to conclude. Hopefully, we will have some answers next week.

Thanks and good luck to you too.

  14. Oh boy Oh boy Oh boy. So much of anger, animosity and hatred towards a Troll. Basically we are all anxious and frightened that we are not even able to see if its a troll or a serious comment. Even I m very anxious about my result. BUt seriously guys, hold yourself up and do not lose urself to yell over a troll.

I have always been a hardworker and have always worked my a*** of in my company. I have been promoted 3 times in the past 34 months. My career has been awesome. But unfortunately, I haven’t been picked up twice in the lottery. And this is my last attempt. If I do not get this time, I know that my entire life journey gonna become different. In my own state in India, selling lottery ticket was banned stating its illegal. But here in the US, my fate is going to be decided based on a Lottery. Very Funny Isn’t it? But well, let’s not lose our patience and character brooding over a St**id lottery system.

I have an option to get myself enrolled in a CPT university if I do not get picked up in the lottery. I am planning to move back to my nation and continue my career there. There, I am not going to have any pressure that I will be kicked out some day because Its’s my own nation. After 3 anxious March/April, my April would be spent happily by going to a stadium to watch IPL with family and friends.

Just mark my words. I gonna achieve so much in life that after 5-10 years, I gonna make this country feel bad that they rejected me via lottery. I gonna let the whole world know what a dubious mistake this nation made.

Remember people still got thru lottery when there was 233, 236k petitions.. probability is not going to change anything.. it’s 50-50.. you get it or lose it.

Remember no one is going to stop how many ever times you say it 🙂 so wait for your attorney to get back to you instead of wasting time reading the comments you don’t like here and commenting on them as whatever you do is not going to change anything.. Funny thing is, you are doing the exact same thing you are complaining of :D.. it’s 50-50.. you get it or lose it.. so why are you here??

  16. Theorem 1:

If your probability of not being selected in the lottery is 50%, then the probability of not being selected in the H1-B lottery for 3 years in a row is 0.5*0.5*0.5 = 12.5%. Hence, you have 87.5% probability of getting H1-B visa within your STEM-OPT period. Looks good? 🙂

    Theorem 2:

Even you wasn’t selected in the past two years of lottery, your chance of being selected in your third trial is still 50%! Because the three trials of lottery are statistically independent events! You can’t say that you have 87.5% probability of being selected. Sad! 🙁

    Theorem 3:

If you are like Gayatri with 3 independent petitions in a year, your chance of getting selected is very high 🙂

    Reply
    • On the surface 0.5 doesn’t look like a bad number.

If you look into the details –

      AD = 20,000/95,000 = 0.2
      AD in regular = 60,000/170,000 = 0.35

So, separately, 1 in 5 gets picked in the first slot.
1 in 3 gets picked in Second slot. This sucks.

I understand these are dependent events but the numbers look ugly.

So, book your tickets early to avoid last minute rise in ticket prices.

Please share good ticket deals to India (New Delhi/Mumbai/Hyderabad)

Folks, stop abusing each other because of a troll account. You stress level is reaching its peak. Even if Gayatri were a real 3 petitions filer you guys really think a significant portion of the lottery is filled with these petitions? Don’t fool yourselves by undermining what this lottery is — it’s a coin toss probability at best. Extra petitions are selected already to account for fraudulent cases. All things considered stop blaming people like Gayatri for your anxiety. Although, thanks Gayatri for providing a punching bag.

  18. So my calculations are…..

    Data Used =
    Master Cap = 20’000 + 5’000 = 25’000 (Accounting for Denials)
    Regular Cap = 63’200 + 5’000 = 68’200 (Accounting for Denials and Chile’s & Singapore)

    Master Lottery Leftover = 95’855 – 25’000 = 70’885
    Total Popultation for Regulat Lottery = 94’213 + 70’885 = 165’098

    Probabilities:

If you have AD = 54%
54% =(Probability You get selected on the Master Cap) + ((Probability you dont get selected on the Master Cap * Probability you get selected on the Regular Cap)
    No AD = 38%
38%= Probability you get selected on the Regular Cap

But this year people have access to the employment history directly through the portal. So does that mean once your information is keyed in by USCIS you should be able to see some update?

    • Based on the following, it sounds like we should. The following is an excerpt from the SEVIS website.

SEVIS and the SEVP Portal Information Sharing

The portal and SEVIS regularly share data. Data entered into the portal is sent immediately to SEVIS to update the student’s record. However, information comes from SEVIS to the portal once a day. Any updates to a student’s record in SEVIS will appear in the SEVP Portal the next day.

      • Thank you for the quick answer. Definitely gives an extra hope to get the results of lottery quicker just in case lawyer didn’t get to you quickly. Have to make backup plans of either going to Europe or India if this doesn’t work out as this would be the last chance.

        • I’m in a similar position!
But to your point, where exactly in your SEVP account will you see the change in Status (assuming that you will)? Under the ‘Employment’ section?

          • That’s the only place where I think an update should show up if it does saying H1B pending or Processing or something. I will keep an eye on that and if I see any change would let everyone know here. Thanks for this forum and all the honest people in here. Hope all the right applications get selected this year.

        • I had the same thought too! I hope the SEVP portal does reflect our status on approval of H1B. Fingers crossed!

          • This is just an assumption though. It is possible nothing may change there. Check encashment and SEVIS update are probably more reliable indicators. SEVP portal update will happen after a day after the change occurs in SEVIS. as updates are only once a day.

  26. I’m not from India but how hard is it to get a funding for PhD in the states? Looks like this year I might not make it again, but I can keep on trying.

    • Don’t do Ph.D. for wrong reasons.

Top university or the regular one, life in a doctorate program gets too hard too fast. You will not be able to cope up with the pressure and the requirements if you are not motivated enough to finish it. Your life in India is much better than what it would be in a graduate school. Seriously, don’t enroll in doctorate program if all you care about is moving to the US.

Even in you somehow manage to get through the program, which I doubt, you will not gain much out of it. It will not result in any monetary benefits, no Visa benefits if you join a for-profit company. Just read quora anwers about doctorate program if you are keen on knowing more. Doctorate program is meant for people who really are interested in research and motived enough to sacrifice almost anything and everything.

  27. For the first ever, USCIS declared the seperate counts for AD and non-AD applications..This is fishy.. Do they want to convey any hidden message here… What do you guys think?

  28. Your chances if you have AD:

    = (20,000/95,885) + (1 – (20000/95885))*(65000/(75885+94213))
= P(Getting Selected in AD Cap) + P(Not Getting Selected in AD Cap) * P(Getting Selected in General Cap)
    = 0.20858 + 0.30243
    =0.51101 or 51%

Your Chances if you do not have AD:
    =65000/170098
    =0.38213 or 38%

    • why do you file 3 applications. you are ruining our chances and not doing you any good.
if 1 of 3 get selected, you are good.
if more than 1 get selected, well come to try next year.
You see? filing 3 won’t increase your chance.

Even I file 3 through unrelated employer.

All these whining men can go back to single life in India. Good riddance !

    • They did a pre lottery duplicates check and they’ll do another after lottery. Chances are you either have already been denied or you’re going to be, without your filling fee returned.
So I’d say the probability is 0% (Assuming their duplicate check system works)

  29. People with access to the new student Sevis portal, do you know if that would reflect our H1B approval status?
    https://sevp.ice.gov/opt

  30. Unlike previous years selecting in lottery would grant 99% H1B approval

From last years onward all hurdles in the process —>right from getting selected in lottery,RFE and approval and what not !!!
