When does H1B Visa 2018 Season Start ?
Update : USCIS accepted H1B Petitions for FY 2018 starting from April 3rd, 2017 until April 7th. They updated that H1B Cap was reached on April 7th, 2017.
Typically, USCIS accepts H1B petitions for next fiscal year starting from April 1st. So, for FY 2018, the start date for accepting applications would be April 1st, 2017. But, for FY 2018 season, April 1st falls on a Saturday, so USCIS will accept applications starting from Monday, April 3rd, 2017. If you were wondering why called 2018, when in 2017, it is the fiscal year dates that dictate that. USCIS fiscal year is from October 1st to March 30th. So, technically the fiscal year for 2018 starts from October 1st and they accept petitions for the same 6 months before the start date and it would be April 1st, 2017. There have been many speculations on increasing the H1B Cap due to extremely high demand and bills proposed for the same in the past, nothing made it through. As of writing of this article, below is the H1B cap quota. We will keep this article updated as new changes come in. The total H1B Quota as of today is 85,000 and it is split like below.

When to plan for H1B 2018 Application – What should be your strategy ?
It is never too late to start planning…Depending on your situation, you may fall in one of the below categories and the suggestions are described below.
- F1 Student in USA : If you are studying on F1 visa and about to graduate in next one year, you should seriously look at finding an internship or co-op at companies that can sponsor your H1B visa. You can search for H1B Sponsors in a particular area using our H1B Sponsors Search Tool and try to get an internship to work there on CPT or OPT after you graduate. This is a strategic move and will require sometime, so plan well.
- Working Professional from outside USA : If you are a working professional outside US, planning to work in US, especially on H1B visa, your best bet is to find Multinational companies ( MNCs) that have major US presence and secure a job there, so that you can position internally for applying to H1B visa, when the season starts. This is a very strategic decision, you need to carefully assess your options, speak to the company if such options exist and then only choose it. There may be many people already in-line for these visas, you need to plan carefully so that you are given a slot in the company’s filing for your next season application.
- Other H4, L1 Visas : If you are on these visas living in USA, your best bet is to find companies just like I mentioned for F1 students that sponsor H1B visas and start interviewing and keeping the conversation going so that you can ask them to file H1B when the season starts.

How to find H1B Visa Sponsor for FY 2018 quota ?
This is probably the most asked question by everyone. It can be a tricky decision, you need be very careful to avoid fraud.
- If you are student in the US, it is very straight forward, you find the list of H1B Sponsoring companies using the tool in an area as I mentioned above and get an internship in one of them so that they can sponsor your H1B visa.
- If you are professional planning to arrive in US from outside America, it can be really tricky. If you work for an Multinational company ( MNC), then they will have some internal process to pick the candidates and then process H1B visa for them…The other option that has been used and abused is the consulting companies route…Many a times, the H1B aspirants approach a body shop IT consulting company to file H1B for them and they apply for the same. It gets nasty with the body shop consulting companies. The comments on this H1B Companies Reviews article are quite eye opening. I advise, you beware of the consulting companies and avoid fraud.

What is H1B Visa 2018 Fee ? How much does it cost for the company ?
The H1B fee varies by the size of the company..As of FY 2017 season, it can range anywhere from $1,600 USD to $7,400 USD + Attorney Fee. On December 23, 2016 , USCIS increased the H1B fee component of base filing fees, which was $325. The below table is updated with the latest fee updates from USCIS. H1B 2018 Lottery Results – Checks Cashed, Receipts :
One of the most asked questions is when will I get to know the lottery result for my petition. Well, this depends on many factors and there is no set SLA or date. To put things in perspective, last year, USCIS did a news alert indicating that they have returned all the rejected H1B petitions on July 8th, 2017. So, you can expect the last date for receiving final lottery decision around mid July 2017. …As we had about same number of petitions filed for FY 2018, it may be slightly earlier or even later in July or even early August 2017… Few of the ways you would know, if you are selected in lottery is that, if the check that was filed with your H1B petition was cashed, or your employer gets the actual physical receipt notice in mail to them. If you filed under US masters quota, SEVIS update is another indication that you were selected in H1B lottery for FY 2018. Ideally, your receipt numbers should arrive within 1 to 2 months…but, you never know, until you get a reject notice to be sure !

New President Trump Administration Impact on H1B Visa 2018 Quota?
We do not know, if this news release is directed by Trump administration or not…but, on April 3rd, 2017 the start date of H1B season, there were set of new announcements made by USCIS to report and prevent abuse of H1B program. Besides this, as of the today ( article updated date), nothing has been officially ordered or specifically implemented by New President Trump Administration. For one reason or another, they still haven’t announced anything regarding the random selection. They might be doing a prescreening, or they’re simply going through all the petitions like they have done in the past, but haven’t announced it yet (laziness a factor here)?
I’m more curious because they have stopped premium processing last week, which means that now have more manpower on hand. So why the delay?

It’s noontime of April 13th. Still no routine announcement about lottery and number of petitions. The only possible reason is A) they’re conducting a pre-screening before a lottery (may or may not needed) B) they’re review all petitions manually.
Petition review will happen after lottery, not before. Also lottery is imminent this year. Not sure why delay this time, but lottety will happen. We have seen lots of people predicting less than 1.5L applications last year, we all know what happened in the end. Thus i would say, hope for the best pepare for the worst. Njoy your life no matter happens what. Life is once!

They are definitely cracking down on H1b Fraud. DOL visited my company and picked one employee randomly to check his documents. Hopefully they review all applications before lottery. #thirdtimer

A receipt number only tells you that an I-129 form was received. You have no way of knowing what kind of I-129 form it was. Note that the I-129 form is used for the following visa categories: E. TN, H, L, O, P, Q, and R.
Even if it was for an H-1B, you have no way of knowing what kind of H-1B is was. Note that an H-1B petition is filed for an extension, transfer, amendment, cap-exempt, and cap-subject.
Please do not look at random receipt numbers on the USCIS website for information related to the lottery. It is not helpful at all!

Infosys management is very smart and saved many candidates to go in the USCIS database.
They might be spending lot of money to get inside information and this time they might have known beforehand what is going to be USCIS policy so they cancelled most of the petitions at the last moment.
Makes sense. Infy has been sending people on H1B for ages. They may have some insider source(just a guess). They made their move at the last moment. Some people are saying Infy did some kind of internal lottery. I don’t buy that.

So many acronyms in this thread. Appreciate the answer.
Looking at the responses from the different people in the forum here and the recent findings:
1. from my account (a top US MNC), alone (only 6 out of 37 people LCA’s were finally filed),
2. From Infosys, whose number of LCA’s filed (as per Department of Labor website is 16,000 +), looking at the comments, my best guess is the actually filed LCA’s is drastically going to be 1/6th of actual numbers for Infosys,
3. The same could have transcended down to other companies as well.
So, mark my words, don’t be surprised if there is NO LOTTERY for the final eligible LCA’s filed !
[NOTE: I am following this website from the last 3 years with dedication (its my 3rd attempt and I am one among the 6 in my account whose LCA was filed – Reasons : “Last 2 years Performance, Number of Attempts, Niche Skills, 7 plus years of experience & Premium Certifications, Good feedback from client).
I am also one among the users, who would have read through each and every comment (A BIG TRUTH) from the last 3 years and I know the numbers: Redbus users have been putting. ]
So the statistics which people are putting from different companies + my personal experience in my company makes me feel, there would not be any LOTTERY, and all the deserving, lucky and fortunate people get through this time ! TOUCH WOOD !

I would tend to disagree with no lottery.
USCIS sent out the notice that they received 65k apps on the 4th day. So they definitely have more than 65k when you take in the new apps from 4th and 5th day after the announcement.
I mentioned “FINAL ELIGIBLE” . That means as USCIS has not circulated any news, that gives an indication, that they might actually be filtering the cases. Who Knows! They have had never taken so much time prior to this.
There delay in publishing the results, is a clear indicator of the internal change of execution in terms of “DECIDING the Final List of Selected LCA’s for this year H1B).
So that may bring down the actual eligible LCA’s around 65 K (may be less even). This is just my best GUESS !

Under 65k…i doubt it. You are assuming that 50% of all applications doesnt qualify. I do not think USCIS has the authority to suddenly decide a new criteria that would disqualify so many without government legislation.
Dude. Keep calm and drink beer. The lottery would be conducted this year. The shortlisted results would be filtered afterwards (not before lottery). So lottery is imminent

I would be happy if you share your thought on the below points.
1. Why is Infy filling less petition this time compared to any of its previous years count. Under each DU, an average of 2 people got selected (This would be around 20 if it were any other year). Going by this, the new petition count will well less than 2K. What is the game plan of Infy right now?
2. I see only infy guys crying out loud in this forum. Other MNC are filling the usual count i believe. What opportunity they see that infy is missing to see?
3. We say infy is the major ‘clog-er’ of H1B system. With infy out of the picture now, can we say there will be a considerable amount of decrease in petition count? OR if the count is high who are we gonna blame :p

You seem to be not reading the chats properly. Its not only the Infy guys alone.
There are other companies as well where the scene is accurately the same. Infy can not be any different.
I belong to a TOP US MNC, and the scenario in my company is exactly similar to Infy. May be in Infy its a little difficult !
Infy looks maximum affected, because their number of LCA’s certified for this year is 16000+ (as per US department of labor website). But looking at the above comments from Infi guys, it seems the actual number to be filed would be approx 3000 – 4500.
And to be precise, the same scenario is in for all companies. Its only that they are not VOCAL about it. But I have read voices from IBM, Infy, TCS, to name a few, who have posted on their plights !

Because there are not actually positions waiting for thousands of people onsite, and even if there are, Infosys has made 0 efforts to fill any of them with locals, which is completely against the principles of h1b. If Infosys and other companies only applied for a visa when there was a need for it, there will not be a lottery. So, while it is bad for you right now, it will do you good when you acquire more skills and apply for a real need some years later.
Can anyone tell how many petitions at these level were file last year, approximately?
there are 2461 PLCs filed between July and Sept 2017 which have ‘Lead’ in the Job title. I think 50-75% is a reasonable estimate of the number of people affected. That turns out to be between 1200 to 1800.

Infosys has NOT cancelled all the applications. Only 1000- 1500 applications have been filed and that too sure shot Visa.
Remember that Indian commerce ministry have met with delegates from USA in Feb/March about H1B Visa.

Since they have not disclosed the selection process, they might not want to create anxiety by disclosing the numbers. But it’s creating more anxiety ;). Since they want to create a database by the end of the year, they do want to make the process transparent, but things are moving slowly.

I just spoke with my attorneys (a mid-sized CA based firm) and they said they’re equally clueless about what’s going on behind the scenes. They also said that it is likely that they are working around ensuring Trump’s electoral promise of getting the ‘Best’ and the ‘Brightest’ though nothing can be confirmed yet. Further, they said they expect significant delays in receipting notices of selected candidates.
Please be patient and don’t pay any heed to people claiming they received their notices. Good luck to all!

Guys, I finally got my receipt no. When I looked up the number, It says the following:
“On April 11, 2017, we received your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number WAC17133501XX, and sent you the receipt notice that describes how we will process your case. This is exactly the same question I also want to ask.
Without Premium Processing, people received their receipts by flat mail in previous year. This lucky people claim his/her receipt on April 13 and USCIS said they received the petition on April 11. I doubt it’s really fast for USPS to deliver the flat mail……

TCSers, any update on H1B from our organisation? VTS still shows pending at visacell for petition filing. I hope the status is the same for every TCSer for whom visa was initiated.

This year very less filings compared to previous year’s.
Number of filing seems to be same (or slightly more) as last year. Not sure though. Hope we are not treated like the INFY guys and atleast our petition is filed.

No transparency. I hope the proposed web based portal that USCIS is planning to launch becomes a reality. Then we will know whether our petitions were truly filed or we were played with false hopes and false promises.
Guys, just be a little patient as visa cell takes their own sweat time to update VTS status.This is my third time and I am used to these internal process and timelines. From 18th-25th status could be changed any time from orange to either red or green. If it is red – cancelled and bye bye for this year and if green- wait for lottery results.

I have talked with my manager. She is not aware of the reason as why so many got cancelled. Some JL4 status not updated yet. They dont know if their case is filed or not. For their case it is showing as payinstructionreceival. I am not sure if JL6 filed or not. Talked with many JL5 and few JL4s all cancelled. Comment is check with DM. But no one knows anything.

What is TL mean, What are jl4,jl5, jl6 represent.. is it represents years of experiences
JL means job level.. n the number attached to it is your experience.
For ex JL5 means job level 5
Jl6 means job level 6
Mostly senior level resources are ignored from H1B filing company does not want to retain them, junior level are given a hope that H1B will be filed so as they can retain them for some period of time.
No tell me JL4, JL5 and JL6 come under which exp bracket.

No not yet. All are cancelled as of now. Mine is also cancelled. Can someone tell the exact reason for this. I have checked with many jl5, all are cancelled.
Few JL4s don’t know the status yet. For few JL4 it is showing as cancelled.
I guess Company is playing game with all TL. There is no reason to cancel all application. I have checked all Tl from 5 years exp to 13 years exp, they cancelled. so experience is not criteria.

Infosys conducted lottery inside. Total for 4500 people they initiated by taking documents. But filed application only for 1000 people. Rest all they cancelled.
So peopel of Infy has to go thru internal lottery and USCIS lottery both.:):(

It will start counting from 1st october let us consider 20 working days per month by end of march it will be 120+ (around 125)
In the month of April it will start from 3rd April . In that case 130 is belong to recent application only but possible it will be extension
for fiscal year the case number will start like WAC18

Receipt number is driven by filing date and not start dare. As they are filed in FY17, they would be WAC17… If the petition is filed after Oct 1, then it will be receipted as WAC18…
I randomly gave some WAC #’ incrementing and decrementing WAC17xxx50583. It looks like, USCIS has started sending out receipts without a lottery. We need to wait upon them for the selection criteria. We might hear soon from our attorneys.
If those xxx’s belong to the business days starting April 3rd, that does not mean they have already conducted the lottery and started sending out receipt numbers. Those receipt numbers can very well belong to cap exempt petitions.

I suspect many people will try to troll us in the upcoming hours/days with some random receipt numbers that say “case received”, but are probably issued to cap-exempt beneficiaries like university professors. Don’t believe in everything you see.

It is the date when USCIS input your information. Not the package delivery date.

My employer’s immigration department sent email around 5:45 central time. First few digits of receipt number are WAC1713XXXXX2. I am not sure what do you mean by background AD/Reg ??

I think folks are referring to this statement of yours “Status is Case Was Received and A Receipt Notice Was Emailed”. As its a non-PP, the online status should not use the word “email”.
Also, until more data points flow in, people will be susceptible of those who claim to have received receipts. You may very well be a genuine case, so take it with a grain of salt.

If you post the entire receipt number, then there is a good chance that it was picked-up randomly from the USCIS site.

Receipt numbers are always generated by USCIS. What I am saying is that anyone can easily search for previously generated receipt numbers and post here. When a person posts “their” entire receipt number, it is quite possible that it belongs to someone else and the person just picked it up from USCIS site.
If you have sometime to kill, use the receipt number and start increasing the last digits, to say WAC1713050584. Look it up on USCIS site. Nothing stops anyone to posting that number and claiming it to be theirs.
A more genuine selected candidate would only share first few numbers and not the entire thing.

Based upon historical data, yes they should have completed it by now. I was hoping for the announcement about it sometime today, but now more hopeful for tomorrow.
I just checked randomly. There are several ‘case was received’ cases before and after this no. Looks like a CAP case. Hopefully we’ll get our receipts soon.

Please provide more information. When I checked case status for this number, it says USCIS received your application on April 7th. Since lottery can be conducted only after April 7th, your receipt number looks fake to me.
It’s a transfer case. Like others have pointed out a CAP case can’t have 7th April as the date.

are we sure that USCIS encahses the cheque just after lottery, i believe it can take some time for cheque encashment is done. And lottery might be done either on Monday or Tuesday or even today.

It was 2014 April when I got rejected in my first lottery. After doing my MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, 4 certifications and 5 years experienced, it was hard to swallow the bitter pill knowing that a stay at home mom who was a project coordinator at 65K a year on contract got selected in the process (this is pre H-4 EAD). Thankfully OPT saved me at the time and the next year I was selected (when even more petitions came), but honestly, I didn’t have any desire to continue in the US. The “american” dream is dead. Ask anyone, if anyone tells there life is awesome, its a flat out lie. I come from New Delhi, and life is a lot more awesome there. Its better to look towards to entrepreneurship, because if any of you are looking to save money here, Sorry bro, this is not the place. If you are getting high six figures only then come, otherwise, no point. and I am also looking forward to entrepreneurship between here and India, since its more welcoming. So people, who are not selected in the lottery, believe me, living in India on 70K – 90K a month, is way better than living in the States at 70-90k a year (depends on the place you stay). You will have a much richer lifestyle in much of the metros of India, than here.
