This is the second article on MS vs MBA in the USA. If you have not read it, please read the first article: Should I apply for MS or MBA in the US ? difference ? It talks about the differences between MS vs MBA and what each of the degrees focuses on. In this article, we will look at aspects of funding, fee and other aspects.
Fees MBA vs MS? Which is cheap? State University Vs Private Schools
MS tuition fee is typically much cheaper than MBA. Business schools have their own course fee structure. Also, in terms of fees, US State schools fee is always cheaper than Private Schools. For instance, MBA at private school like University of Chicago will cost you ONLY the tuition for NINE MONTHS is $74,919 as of year 2022.
As a non-resident, MBA at a state school like University of Wisconsin will cost you $47,013 for a 9 months for the year 2022. Also, fees at University of Houston Masters program for MBA is around $1397 per credit in 2022, which comes to $12,573 per semester if you take 9 credits. Not going into specifics, but if you look at MS fees as well, it is cheaper to study in state schools.
The summary is that state schools always have a lesser fee as they are state-funded. For more details, read Cost of MS / MBA in US – Apply for Cheaper Schools
Funding – TA, RA, GA for MBA and MS ?
Funding is a big thing for students and most common types of funding as we have explained are in the form of Teaching Assistantships(TA), Research Assistantship(RA) and Graduate Assistantship(GA). Check the post about what are TA, GA and RA for more info if you do not know with funding info.
Let’s think logically first, MS is more technical and research oriented, logically speaking if the University has more research funding then, there is more funding for MS. On the other hand, MBA, it is not tied very much to research, where do funds come from? The only source for MBA funding is Fellowships, scholarships, or TAs for Undergrad Business students.
If you notice, for MBA, the research part is almost not there unless you are in Ph.D. Guess what, if you are MBA and applying for funding in Business school, MS people of Marketing or Finance are competition to you for that too. So, your option is to work in other departments or have no funding at all.
But for MS, you have many options like working as RA, TA or GA in your department or other department based on your background. Not only logically, but in reality too, there is less funding for MBA than for MS due to the research focus and other related aspects. You may get in-state tuition in state universities if you stay long enough like year or so and pay taxes in that states by working on a work visa, but in private schools forget about funding…
Should you study MS or MBA? How to decide ?
I know most of you want to be managers and entrepreneurs in future by jumping into MBA right after B.Tech, B.A or B.Com… Let me tell you the truth folks, You will learn very little if you go to MBA without two to three years of work experience. You have to work in an organization setting to fully comprehend and appreciate the full potential of MBA. For this reason, most of the business schools have a requirement of 3 to 5 years of work experience as a major factor.
Think about this, “if you were never a team member, how will you understand the team member’s problems and their perspective if you were never a team member and directly have become a manager”. So, start at the base and then climb up ! My recommendation is if you are starting your career, then do not go for MBA, work and then go. Read MBA after B.tech or With Work Experience ?. As of MS is concerned, as I said in previous posts there are many types of students who would like to come to the US for education and some for jobs only. Depending on your situation, you may pick one of the below.
- Typically, MS is done for anyone with career path of PhD or research.
- If you want to do Ph.D. someday and be professor, then MS and PhD integrated program.
- If you worked for two years, and have money to support your MBA financially, then MBA
- If you are not sure what you want to do, then take time to think about what you really like and where you see yourself in next 10 years and take a decision on what makes sense for your career path.
Overall, it is up to your passion on where you want to be in the next 10 years, try to do something that will help you get there…it is your decision, plan well and go for your passion… I am not trying to discourage anyone to do MBA right after B.Tech, but just telling you the facts I have learnt. Good Luck ! Make an informed decision….It is your future !
What are your thoughts ? Anything to add that I have missed ?
Hello sir,
Im sruthi.. Doing my 4th year b.tech in biotechnology… Im actually confused whether to choose mba or ms.. For me i wanna get settled soon n start earning bt my subject of interest is always gonna b bio .. So please help me out n also as of nw i hav no idea about Ph.D..
Sruthi,
If your goal is to settle down, I suggest you find a job first at an MNC that can give you more choices to move to US for work… I suggest you read Goals for MS in US.
Hii sir, I completed my 3years degree b.com and 1year pg diploma in taxation so totally 16 years education is completed.so can I do ms in financial engineering in USA
Hello Kumar,
I am Soundari. Thanks for the article and its really helpful. I have completed my B.Tech(Information Technology) and worked for around 4 years as a developer. I recently moved to U.S and planning to do higher studies. I am interested in management side. And now confused either to choose MS in management or MBA. Kindly help me to make a decision.
Soundari,
It depends on what you really want to do with your degree. If you plan to change your career or move to Management, MBA would be a good choice. If you are just doing it for passion, pick something that you like to do…If you are doing it for job, then I do not think you need to do it, you can wait and get your H4 EAD ( assuming you are on H4 ). You may read MS in MIS careers to get some idea on the path. You need to be clear on your goal, take time to think about it…maybe you can schedule a session with admissions at a nearby school in your area and their advise too…
V. Devender,
You may be eligible. I suggest you check with the schools you apply regarding the degrees you have done and if you would be eligible. Usually the rule of thumb is that they want a bachelors degree that is equivalent to US Bachelors degree..some even just accept 15 years of education. You may read Do US schools accept 15 years of Education ?
Hello Kumar,
Your article is very helpful to gain an understanding of MBA and MS programs. Many thanks to you.
I am a Network Engineer with work experience of 2.7 years and have a B.Tech degree in CS. I’m not inclined towards programming so have MIS in mind to pursue. I want to grow up the ladder in Management. I want to know if it’s beneficial to do MS in MIS as per the current IT trend and which subject would be better to have a major in? Could you please suggest universities to pursue MS in MIS,
with affordable fee? Expecting GRE score above 300, BE: 67%
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Shula
Shula,
Typically, if you would like to grow up the ladder of management, it is recommended to do MBA as it will groom you for the leadership roles. Read Careers in MIS vs CS . It all depends on how you position your degree. You may get MIS and position for leadership role too. Getting a degree does not guarantee you anything, it just helps you get some of the credentials. We do not advise on schools here, you probably need to do your research. You can check average scores at schools to get an idea where you can get admission…
Thank you Kumar.
I appreciate your efforts Sir Kumar ,
Actually i was in major doubt that should i take work experience for couple of years or go for direct post graduation after my graduation , And thanks to you for your beautiful advice for future MBA applicants. I want to know that do it is beneficial to get work experience when you are going for MS in same subject as that of bachelors ?
Or go directly for MS with quite fresh idea of your subject ?
Thank you 🙂
Laksh baweja,
MS and MBA are very different and their purpose are different. I feel that for MBA, it is very much required…but for MS it depends on factors like your goals for MS and Phd Aspirations. You may plan to work before MS, if you are planning on doing some industry-centric research in that area and later in PhD as well. If not, it should be fine to do MS, without experience.
Hello sir. Really good and detailed articles.
I’m currently doing btech in ECE 3rd year from a private university.
My aim is to be entrepreneur and earn hell lot of money(obviously everyone wants so :D)
But not really sure of what to do. I’m thinking to go for MS in USA after btech and then job and after that MBA. I don’t know if it is right or not. Just a thought. Please guide me through. How and what to do.
Shivam,
MS in US may not really get you to be an entrepreneur. If you really want to start a venture, you should start early, learn by winning or failing early and keep moving…It can be risky to pursue your dream of entrepreneurship at later point…Anyways, think about what you want to start your venture in ? DO you have an idea already ? If so, try to get some seed funding and start…you will learn as you go…you can research on the internet …here is a full startup course by ycombinator
Hello.. Piyush this side.
I have done my b.tech in Computer Science in 2014 after didnt joined any company n starting blogging. Now I do not find any interest in blogging so I want to per sure MS as I dont have the work experience for MBA.
I want to do MS in management, so can u guide me some good MS programs in management with huge scope .
Thanks waiting for your reply
Piyush arora,
Let me ask you something, why do you want to MS in US ? If you have not, read Goal for MS in US . We do not advise on schools or programs. I believe that you need to know why you are doing MS or MBA and then pick a school of your choice based on your interests. You also need to be aware of the H1B lottery Situation with F1 Visa .
Take time to think about all these and do some research…make an informed decision after that.
Hi,
I Have Just Completed My B.tech and in Future I Want To Join My Family Business and Enter Into New Buisness Ventures. So Basically My Long Term Goal Is To Be a Successful Entrepreneur.
So What Would You Recommend Whether I Should Go For A Work Ex. Or Directly Go For a M.B.A Degree.
And,If Going For The Work Ex. Please Help With The Type Of Job I Should Go For.
Thank You.
nikhil,
If you want to join your family business and become entrepreneur, I suggest you start working for something that is in the same line as your your current business and then maybe pursue MBA, if you feel it adds value. You do not necessarily need MBA to be an entrepreneur… As you know what you will do for career, the sooner you get started at that, the better you will learn, so it is even better to start working at your family business and maybe do MBA at a later point, if you feel the need.
Hello,
I have done BSC, then MBA in marketing. However i have My Major work experience in Banking. I have total 13 years of experience, out of which initial 5 years i worked in Marketing then from last 8 years I am working in Banking. I want to pursue further studies for better financial position and good boost in my career. Also I wish to work and settle outside India. I did credit manager and Relationship manager Roles in my banking career. Can you please suggest me further study options.
Thank You,
Mangesh
Mangesh,
All I can suggest is to have a clear goal on what you want to become in next 10 years and plan for that. Anything you do should add towards that goal, either working abroad or studying abroad. I suggest you take time to think and then plan accordingly.
Hello,
i was completed M.Sc biotechnology with 65 percentage. i will write GRE & IELTS. i want to apply MS in USA. i am not well in financial level. so i must need loan for my higher studies. but it is not my problem. after i jointed MS in usa can i survey in financial level.can i get part time job for my financial support and it is enough for me?
divya,
Well, you will need to take loan or get full funding from the school. Part time jobs on campus only pay for your living expenses and may not pay for your tuition, unless you get TA, RA or GA. I suggest you be prepared financially as things can be very different when you are in US and you need to be prepared for the worst.
i want to do MBA after btech (obviously as u suggested after 2-3 yrs experience) but if i choose any another coursein btech not relating to MBA. will i have any problem while pursuing MBA
Hi Kumar, I completed my B.Tech in IT in 2015 from a private college and currently working with a San Francisco based MNC in India only. By the time results of this year’s CAT comes out I’ll have 1.5 years of Experience in Sales (Yes..!! you heard it right SALES, Fortunately or Unfortunately I landed up in sales.)
1. Is this experience will be of any use for an MBA program?
2. Is this experience enough?
3. In which domain should i do my MBA in like- Marketing, HR or Finance? (Considering my work ex.)
Please add another question to that-
Should i do MBA from abroad or India itself..?
I’m from Karachi and I am doing bcom and final year is going so I want to ask that’s after bcom can i do master in mass communication from usa?
Waiting for answer.
Maria,
Yes, you can. You will need to check with schools regarding the required tests to take. You will need to do some research on the schools and then apply as per process. Also, you need to ensure, if they accept B.com or if they require you to take additional 1 year of course for 16 year requirement.
Thankyou so much for your positive reply I am so happy
thank you very much for the knowledge provided by you,
furthermore i had like to ask you that i am Graduating from B-Tech In Electrical Engineering with a GPA 2.0 from Indian University, and this is what Haunts me every time.
1) with a GPA of 2.0 what is my future if i want an admission in MBA ?
2) what if i want to get a job on my B-Tech degree, will i be able to get a job?
ank,
1) admission decision is not just dependent on GPA, it is looked as a whole, which includes GRE/ GMAT Scores, TOEFL, SOP, etc. So, dont worry too much.
2)Of course, you can get a job with B.tech. You will need to do some serious job search with stiff competition.
Thank you very much for providing such a detailed information.
i have a question
i am currently pursuing my B-Tech in Electrical Engineering (college senior) from india, i am a green-card holder,
i will be in the USA in couple of months as soon as i complete my B-Tech,
i want to be an entrepreneur in future.
1)Can you Please Guide me with which course should i go with and before joining any college or university do i need to give any competitive exams like GRE ?
2) If i decide to take up a job before joining MBA ( as u suggested) will i be able to get a job Straight out of college ?
you Help will be very Great full.
thanks in Advance
Ankit,
1. You do not need any specific courses. Usually you will need to take GRE, TOEFL or GMAT depending on what you apply for.
2. It all depends on how well you do job search and find the job.
You do not need a degree to be an entrepreneur. You can start to do some online courses like the Y-combinator startup course to get some idea. MBA will give you some level of idea on how the entire system works in business, but it is not required to be an entrepreneur.
thank you very much for the knowledge provided by you,

Hello Sir, Your article was a fantastic read..After reading this, I have an almost clear understanding that I would want to pursue MBA..I am working in MNC from last 2 years and I am aiming to join the MBA college next year itself preferably JBIMS in mumbai. I had a doubt that by the time I join the college, I will be having 3+ years of experience. Will this be too much for MBA? According to you what is the upper limit of the experience? Also I am a little scared thinking that next year would be my last chance to get into a MBA college since after that, owing to my more experience in MNC, it will cause hindrance in future.
Saurabh Mehta,
In fact, the more experience, the better for MBA 🙂 no upper limit. Don’t worry too much about your experience and future options. You will always find time to do it. Just plan it so that you give the entrance tests and other aspects of life.
Hi Kumar,
You have done a great job with providing detailed information.
My query is I have a BCA degree and have 6 yrs of IT experience till date as well as have completed Executive MBA from a renowned institute but my current company or any other in India does not give much importance to Exe MBA or at least it has been a disappointment so far.
I would like to know for growth point of view will MS in MIS from US work for me ? As MBA from US is way more costly for me to go ahead with.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
vijaya,
Well, it is hard to say. You already have a Master’s level degree, people will always question your logic for doing that. You may read the scope and careers for MS in MIS . My view is that you should try to leverage your MBA in some way. Doing another MBA is no good…I understand your situation, the key point is the value you get out it.
Hello sir,
I have finished my B.E from Mumbai university with 76%.
Have worked with Accenture for 3.5 years n now working with a leading investment bank from past 2 months.
I have not given any exam like gmat or cat yet.
Should I go for MBA in India?
Or Ms in MIS ?
Due to my family problem I didn’t want to stay for longer period in USA but I heard since I’ve got experience some good universities can offer MIS in 1 year, is that the case?
If for experienced people Ms in MIS is offered for only 1 year duration, then can you list few good universities for the same?
Apologize for long questions.
Please help me out.
Looking forward for your reply.
Thank you very much in advance.
Monika Singh,
MBA and MIS are very different programs as the article explains, it is up to you to decide based on where you see yourself in next 10 years.
Again, studying in US vs India depends on your priorities and the kind of education you want. There are some really good schools in India, if you can get into to them…
We do not advise on any schools, you need to do your research on schools that offer 1 year programs.
All in all, I suggest that you take time to think about where you see yourself in next 10 years and pick education that helps you get there…the country does not matter, India has many good schools…
Hello sir i complete my b.tech in ece with 71% marks .after b.tech i joined an ngo . I have 2 yrs of experience in NGO. Can i applied for mba program
amarpreet singh,
Yes you can. You need to take GRE/ GMAT, TOEFL and apply to US schools. Check any of the websites for the standard process.
hello. i am amandeep and currently i am pursuing B-Tech (8th semester). I am confused that which course should i choose after B-Tech which will help me to enhance my future in USA.
please give guidance for this.
Amandeep,
It totally depends on what you want to do in life. What do you see yourself doing in next 10 years…What is your passion ? If you are not sure, take time to talk to few people like your seniors, professors to understand what are things that are out there…Once you are clear on what you like and where you see yourself, then pick up education that can help you get there…
Hi,
This is Rajat Jain and i am pursuing my BE degree I am in final semester and after 2-3 months, i will complete my BE degree So i am confused a bit What to do after that??
Truth is that i had done BE from computing and i don’t have too much interest in programming. So tell me what to do in future. Actually i want to do bussiness and want to start my own at a stage in my life. So help me please that whether i should go for mba or is there any business management field in MS i should go for??
my main aim is to do what i love and earn money.
Also tell me the best universities of whatever you will be suggesting.
hello kumar,
my self ashwin i have finished BTECH MECHANICAL iam triying to study in USA but iam fully dou bt that is which course will i select, MBAor MS.i want to get job after my studies
ashwin,
It totally depends on what you want to do. The above article talks about the difference. You need to look at where you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years and then study something that will add value and help you get there. Talk to few people, take time to think about it and make an informed decision.
Hello,
I had completed my computer engineering in 2015. Just now I am learning regarding ppc(pay per click) marketing through online articles(Google Adwords) and I am really interested to work in that field professionally. But at the same time I want to study further either Ms or MBA through USA but get job related Paid search only. This confuses me even more what to do? please do suggest me and solve my confusion.
Sweety,
The area you are looking at is part of Advertising, which is part of Marketing domain. If you really passionate about it, you can pursue MS in Marketing and then take emphasis around Digital Marketing and advertising kind of courses and then pursue a career in that. You do NOT need a degree to pursue career in that area though.
HELLO SIR, I HAVE DONE B.TECH WITH MECHANICAL AND NOW I AM CONFUSED ABOUT WHICH FIELD OF MS IS BEST FOR ME AS MY MOTTO IS ONLY MAKE MONEY…. CAN YOU SHOW ME THE BEST PATH FOR MY CARRIER SIR…????
SHARMA PAWAN,
Well, you really do NOT need MS to make money. The best path is to join an MNC company and work in off-shore project for a year or two and then grab an opportunity to go on-site. That way you do not have to waste 2 years for MS and what you get gain is 2 years of experience and also path to US or Europe or any other country that gives you more money in terms of savings.
Hi kumar
i am currently a 2nd year B.E computer engineering student .i am still too confused about mba vs ms.see i am a person who believes in loving what i do rather than do what you love..i like programming …honestly currently i am not that good at that but with practise can even be better at programming..but i always wanted to be CEO of company…having my own company…to work for myself and do something extraordinary…i dont know what i should do..too confused..needed guidance..awaited reply..thanks.
madhav,
If you really want to be CEO of a company, having any education around MBA would help. Specifically, you do not need to have any sort of training or such. You can start to learn about entrepreneurship online. Just go to Starup Course by Y Combinator, it is a great course to review. If you really want to something, I suggest having MBA will give you the business side of things and let you be more customer driven. Read some books on entrepreneurship, you will get more ideas…
Hello Kumar
This is vicky BE graduate, 2015 passed out and currently im working till now. i have planned to do MBA in 2017 but only in top schools , is this decision wise and good and what are the kind of packages that we can expect for an MBA grad from IIM?..
Vignesh,
It is a wise decision to work for couple years and then work. Read When to do MBA after BE . It all depends on the kind of job you land after MBA, there is no standard. You can check the respective Business schools’ websites to get an idea of the salary of the alumni. You can check FT.com as well.
Hi Kumar , First of all Awesome post and more importantly answering every comment !!! really appreciate that.
I also have a query, please help me through this .
I have done BTech in mechanical and have 3.5 years of experience in Nuclear power plant. My first priority is to have Good Salary job , second is preferably in technical but not in research. Can you tell me what is the Good salary job scope for me after doing MBA or MS in Mechanical Engg and administration .
Vikas,
Good Salary is very relative…One of my friends has similar background and he has done MS in Engineering Management and he now manages engineers, it is an administration role. You could either do MS in Engineering management or do MBA and try to crack into leadership roles for better pay and position. It requires careful planning…Speak to your seniors or your senior colleagues on their journey and get some insights…Pick something that you are passionate about, you will be able to make money anywhere if you show your value…
Hi Kumar,
i have close to 3 years of experience(2 years and 7 months) in IT field as Quality assurance. i want to enter in the field of investment banking. right now i have two options to consider MS in Finance or MBA. however for MBA , work experience is less.
when discussed with family, they said i should opt for MS in Information System where your 2 years of IT experience can be useful.
at this point i am confused, what to opt for because since economy is at lower side, and “Engineer pursuing MS in finance wont be a good idea”.
could please help me through, which field i should go to?
it is a nice post which you have explained very well. it is helpful to me so to put my query to you.
Regards,
Sid
Sid,
I always believe in pursuing something that you are passionate about. Family advise is always good as they want to see us happy and have a job…on the flip side, we may end up into a cycle where our passion does not get fulfilled and we end up working all our lives without any satisfaction. There is always a risk you take when you try something new…but, you need to make a calculated risk to pursue your passion. Take time to think of your situation and pursue your passion. I was exactly in your situation few years ago, I tried to subtly convince my parents and go ahead with my MBA….
Hi Kumar,
thanks for the advice , i think what i exactly looking is to update my skills further more. that why i posted the post. whether to do MS in CS or Finance.
your answer has certainly helped me what i should pursue. i need to tell you, i loved both subjects– finance and Computer science. though i never studied finance, but i knew some part of it while investing in stock markets . for CS, i use to opt Programming languages in B.tech in every semester when ever there is an elective to offer.
May be working in IT has certain impact of pushing me toward Finance. it got me wonder may be that field of line would be better. but i forgot, both field will be challenging enough and only thing i have to do is to get the quality work and more importantly quality information about the subject. and that’s why my family advice was so important. hence i was confused earlier and had me posted the query on your article.
i have decided for MS in CS.or may be Computational finance, depending on my Selection. i am planing from US.
i want to know if you can help me understand the process of recruitment in US. i mean in India, we have campus recruitment after your graduation etc such as it is different procedure all together.
how exactly it works in US especially for international student?
hope to see your reply.
With Regards,
Sid
Sid,
Read Campus Placements in US – Jobs
Wonderful are your post!!
Apperciate everything you have written..
I cleared all my doubts..
Thank you
Hi Kumar,
Please refer my comment of my post.
i have copied the same on your reply.
thanks.
hi kumar ,
HAPPY NEW YEAR
This is dileep, B.COM final year ,i want to do ms in us,for that 16 year education is reduired,so i decided to do bridge course,as i searched for 1 year pg courses i found colleges provide DISTANCE edication . does distance education is eligible for ? please help me out and please suggest some regular BRIDGE courses
THANK YOU
Dileep,
It always depends on the school you apply to for MS. I suggest you check with the schools you plan to apply, if that bridge course would work. In fact, some schools do recognize 3 year degree for MBA. Check can I do MBA with 15 years education . We do not advise on any courses.
I am final year B.Com student in Mumbai appearing for my T.Y.B.Com in March 2016. Can I apply for M.S. in finance in U.S. after B.Com or do I have study for 2 more years in India before I apply for M.S.? People typically do their M.Com to complete 17 yrs of formal education before applying for M.S. But is that mandatory?
Also is M.Com done via correspondence considered valid now for M.S. admission?
Thanks
Jovita,
It totally depends on the school you are applying to. Some schools do recognize the bachelors degree of 3 years and let you get admission. Read 15 years of Education for MBA in USA
Hi! I’m into sales and marketing. Will an MBA be useful for mt career?? And if yes, which subject should i do my MBA in?
Murali,
It totally depends on what you want to do with MBA. It is typically used as a management degree for going up the ladder or getting into specific areas of leadership. You need to think about where you see yourself in 5 to 10 years and pick some emphasis that you are passionate about…
Hi Kumar,
Can a B.com computer student opt for MS or is MBA the only option.
Rajender,
No, you can pursue either MS or MBA. You will be asked to do some pre-requisites, if you change your major. Read can I apply for different specialization in MS
Hi Kumar,
You blog was very helpful..thankyou
My name is Sai..I have done my BTech and i’m working in the US for the past 2 years (total experience of 5 years). I have also seen a lot of universities offering MS in Finance . It is considered as MS or MBA and what are your views on MS in Finance (or MS in finance related subjects)
Hi Sai, It is MS degree offered in the business school and NOT MBA. Typically, MS in finance is done by students who would like to pursue investment banking, brokerage, M&A area, CFO business area, go for this degree. You will be specialized in finance. It is up to your passion on where you see yourself. You may be asked to do some pre-requisites as your background is not in finance.
Hi kumar,
I have been graduated in computer science and engineering in BTECH,Now I am working as a software programmer from 1 year. But i am tired of this coding (as I am weak at coding)so i want to go for MBA? Is it a better option as MBA is My interest and I am also some what good at management and can u please tell me upto what level of coding we can expect in MS and the comparison of difficulties between both?
Thankyou.
Gowtham, Both MS and MBA are very different programs, you cannot really compare them, it is not apples to apples comparison. If you are passionate about getting into management or business leadership kind of roles, it is a good to consider MBA after working for couple more years. Think about where you see yourself in next 10 years and then pursue education that adds value to that and helps you gain that vision.
I have done my engineering in IT and have 5.9 yrs of job experience in IT industry as SAP BASIS.Now I am planning to study further.I am planning to appear for Tofel. Can you please suggest.there our colleges which accept GRE score for MBA..I wanted to know what should I pursue MBA or MS in IT and I even wanted to know good universities which accept only TOFEL score and work experien
Is Europe is better or USA is better for further studies
Anamika, The full list of such schools that accept GRE for MBA are at ETS website . You need to think about what you are passionate about and then pick something that you like. Better is very relative on what you want and your perception. Take some time to think about what you want to do and what drives you…Think about what you will want to do in after 10 years and pursue education that helps you do that…
Hii Kumar,
I am pursuing my finally year b.tech. I am a Computer Science student. I am totally confused to choose whether MIS or MS after my education. I am interested in doing management degree rather than core courses in CS. Is a good opinion to choose management course after b.tech as I won’t be having any job experience. I don’t want to get a break in my education with job in between. So could you please suggest me a good one.
Sai, If you are looking at MBA, I suggest you work for few years. Read When to do MBA after B.tech ?. Getting break does not impact anything…dont worry about it…it is about your commitment.
Hii, Kumar..
I am Ramya i am a b-tech graduate from ECE background ..i am actually a pass out of 2014 but i had couple of backlogs so was able to complete graduation in 2015.. my percentage is close to 55%..now i have become a little serious about my career and want to do MBA in USA .. i have a work experience of nearly 2 years in TECH MAHINDRA as tech support agent… i am now confused about what stream to choose and what are the preferred universities..and how much should i score in GMAT.. could you please help me!!
Ramya,
One of the ways to look at your career options is to think about where you see yourself in 5 to 10 years after education. Based on that you can choose your career path. Once you decide on MS or MBA, then you can look for schools by doing research on the internet. Usually the schools would have average scores required by them for admission, that is a high level benchmark that you need. Again, admission decision is based on many factors and you need to ensure, you have your application well prepared with proper SOP, TOEFL scores, recommendations, etc.
Thanks for your advise Kumar…what stream do you suggest for MBA ..as my Btech stream was ECE
Ramya, I suggest you think about what excites you…It is something that you need to choose based on your interests. Speak to few people, read online you will get some idea…Usually MBA is general administration with emphasis on an area.

Hi Kumar, My name is Vemulapati Rohit Kumar Reddy. My details are as follows:-
1) D.O.Birth : 11-07-1991
2) SSC : 83%(Completed on 2006)
3) Intermediate : 73%(2006-2009)
4) Degree : 55 %(Pursued Bcom(Computers from Kakatiya
University, Warangal). (2009-2012)
5) Work experience : Working as Junior Assistant in State Government Area Hospital, Malakpet,
Hydeabad(From 17.07.2010 to till date)
Now I want to pursue MS or MBA according to my background in
United States for Fall-2016 As I have done my 15 years of education.
I have a good touch in Maths. My passion when I completed Intermediate was computers but due to circumstances I have done BCOM(Computers).
My purpose of going US is to make money. If I go with MS or MBA what is the specialization good for my profile. Which career is good in long-lasting basis.
My contact number is 9849532679.
Rohit, Unfortunately, if your goal is to just make money, then I am afraid, you need to rethink about studying in US, because of the lottery situation over the last few years. I suggest you read study in US with H1B lottery to get some idea. Read goal for ms in US
hello.
I would like to know about the1. financial status and 2.types of positions in the companies; of the individuals after completing their respective courses of MS or MBA.
Gita, It totally depends on the role you apply to. There is no blanket answer. For instance, if you do MBA and get into Investment banking, you may make quite a bit of money…unlike, if you do MS and end up in a developer role, you may make less…so, it depends.
Hi Kumar, I have done M.C.A and 4+ year experience in Software industry. I am planning for MBA in US. But I am confused about MS vs MBA. Sometime I think about MS in Data Analytics or BigData but after reading your article looks like I should go for MBA. Need your suggestions …
Lalit, As I mentioned about, it totally depends on your career aspirations. Your degree should help add value to your career growth. If you are keen on pursuing management roles, MBA will help…Again, doing MBA is one part, it comes down to how you position yourself to that roles. Take time to think about your long term goals and make a decision based on that.
Hello sir.. Myself completed ma b tech aeronautical engineering 2015 pasd out .. I like to do mba in US.. But every one saying mba without experience won’t help u..But to be frank as of aeronautical it’s tough to get in to any job… I don’t like to waste years for searching jobs alone.. So can I start ma mba from tis September 2016? Inspite of wasting years for searching jobs
Iyan V, Usually work experience helps a lot. Read Is work experience required for MBA Having said that, if you are in tough situation like you mentioned, you may go ahead. The catch is that some of the really good schools would have work experience as a requirement…one of the ways to increase your chances is to get really good scores in GMAT and TOEFL.
Hiii Kumar. I have few doubts I want to ask you. I am in the last year of my B.Tech. right now and I am now pretty sure that I dont want to be in technical line anymore, so I opted for MBA. But then I gave it a even more thought to and I realised that I love Maths more than anything. Now that I knew that I want to do something which can keep me involved in maths only so I searched even more, so I came up with some confusion in head if I should do MBA from some IIMs or MS in Mathematics because I can have all those job opportunities as that of an IIM student by MS too I guess… I am not sure??? Also please tell me what would be the opportunities I would be having after doing MBA and after MS in Mathematics…
Rahul, Where do you see yourself in 10 years time ? Doing what ? You should be dreaming of what you want to be in 10 years and make sure higher education helps you with that…MBA or MS should add value. The degree is how you position yourself….You can do MBA and have an emphasis in Operations Research, which is quite number focused…you could do MS in Finance and be around numbers…So, the opportunities are there….Coming to your question, I do not know if MS students from IIMs will be allowed for all job interviews like MBAs from those schools, it is very school specific…I suggest you look at your long term goals and where you want to be and then add education to that…
hiii kumar
Firstly, thanx for replying to it. Now actually the problem is firstly as I already told you that Maths is my area of interest, apart from that I searched over for the subjects taught in IIM A. Most of them, to me, were more of commerce subjects and less of maths. Now that, if I opt for MS mathematics, then the field would obviously be of my interest but not sure of much job opportunities in it. Basically, I want careers in which my knowledge of pure maths could be fully used. I tried to find students who are doing or have passed out MS mathematics degree for further career perspectives but didn’t found any. If you have someone in your knowledge… please do let me know. And please tell me what do you think over this matter ??? What should I opt for according to you ?
Rahul, Your education degree is less relevant these days with Software jobs. You see people with Biology background doing Comp Science roles. I would suggest you think about your passion…Many data scientists have background in Mathematics….There are plenty of opportunities, it is how you position yourself for jobs. You can even look at doing such degrees in US or UK…Think about it…What do you see yourself doing in 10 years time…look from that perspective and then plan your education to help that…
Do you think that going for MS first and then MBA , you would be wasting your time doing MS?
Varun C, Absolutely ! I wasted 2 years of my time doing MS. I would rather work and get experience during that two years, instead of MS, and do MBA directly.
Hi Kumar, nice article posted by you. However, i have a very different kind of query. Firstly, i am not sure about what to choose MS or MBA. I am currently working in mainframe technologies for the past 11 months and i have worked on Java before that in my college and i liked working on Java Technologies so much as i use to hate mainframe. I really like the idea of learning new programming languages but i am really worried about my future because some people say there’s not enough money in this field. And i would like to see myself settled 3-4 years down the line, that’s why this MBA thing came into my mind.
It would be very helpful if you provide me with the clarity as to what lies ahead (role wise) if i choose MS in computer science (considering i am an E&C graduate), what kind of jobs i might get and similarly for MBA. Keeping in mind that i am presently working in IT field and the growth prospects are very bleak and slow and i want to settle down in 3-4 years of time.
Thanks
Shivam,
There is nothing called settled in 3 years time. With the market dynamics, we need to be up to date to stay relevant and have good career. In in general, may not add too much value to your career unless you are into research or teaching. MBA on the other hand will give you a different track of career like project managers, product managers, other management roles. The fact is that you need to push yourself and grab such roles. Think about your interests and plan your education to add value to your career plan.
Hi,
I am a computer science student working in software field for 2 years. “If my work experience is in technical side (specific software say MatLab), in what way MBA will boost my career opportunities?” this question is confounding me whenever I think of MBA.
Shyam, read When to do MBA , it talks about work experience value. Technology does not matter.
Hi Kumar, I have 2 years of Experience in SAP UI Fiori (no much coding was involved) and basically I have done Mechanical Engineering graduation, I am thinking of a master degree and pretty much confused in choosing the course. Should I go for MBA or MS? I am not interested in coding as well ! Please help me with that.
Naik, What do you want to do in the long run ? Where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years ? Take sometime to think about these questions… Once you are clear on that, then pick up what makes you reach there. MS or MBA should add value to your career and help you achieve your long term goals. As the above article talks, those are the differences ( check part 1 of article too). If you are looking for management roles, it is a good idea to consider MBA. You can work for year or two more and then pursue that…
Thanks a ton Mr Kumar! I will look into that 🙂
Neatly written! Much needed advice I could infer from the article. It helped me a lot in creating a clarity of thought. Keep up the good job kumar.
Cheers Rhythm !
I am currently pursuing my b.com hons and I am interested to pursue mis in USA I want to know if I am eligible with a three year degree and no prior work experience.
Rishika, It depends on the school. Typically schools require 16 years of education for MS. You need to find schools that accept your 3 year degree. You may read Do B Schools accept 15 years Education in US for MBA to get some more idea.
Hats Off Kumar for sharing this knowledge, you are doing great Job……
Thanks Dilip for kind words !
