What is the H1B Visa 2019 season start date ?
Update : USCIS will start accepting H1B Petitions starting from April 2nd, 2018 as per their official update on their website. In general, USCIS starts accepting applications for the next fiscal year exactly 6 months before the start of the next fiscal year. USCIS fiscal year for 2019 starts from 1st October 2018, which means they should accept applications for FY 2019 from April 1st, 2018. As April 1st is a Sunday, USCIS should accept applications for H1B 2019 season from April 2nd, 2019.

What is H1B visa 2019 Quota for Regular and Masters filings ?
As of the date of writing of article, the H1B quota is as below. This is also called the H1B Visa Cap. You can read more at What is H1B Cap ? Regular vs Masters quota ?

  • H1B Regular Quota : 65,000 visas
  • H1B Master’s Quota : 20,000 visas. ( only US Masters eligible)

Also, of the overall 85,000 visa cap, every year 6,800 visas are set aside for the citizens of Singapore and Chile as part of the Free Trade Agreement with them. There were few bills part of Comprehensive Immigration Reform that are not active in Senate that were proposed from Obama administration days to change the cap count to 110,000 and Masters to 25,000, including potential to make H1B cap extend up to 180,000. But nothing has moved and all are dormant. Nothing new has been proposed by the new Trump Administration regarding changing cap count. Will there be Lottery for H1B 2019 season ? Lottery Predictions ? Filing Numbers ?
Update : USCIS had lottery for FY 2019 quota and received 190,098 petitions.
Looking at the historical trend of H1B filings, cap reach dates, it is quite possible that we would have lottery for FY 2019 quota.  We have written a detail article looking at historical data, Trump administration new policies like ‘Buy American, Hire American’, students on OPT, H4 EAD removal rule, etc. factors. When is H1B Visa 2019 Lottery Date ?
Update : USCIS Conducted Lottery for FY 2019 on April 11, 2018.
There are two things, one is when the H1B petitions are accepted for the lottery and second is when the actual lottery is done. H1B visa petitions for next fiscal year would be accepted by USCIS from April 2nd, 2018 for 5 working days until April 6th, 2018 to be part of the lottery. Now, the actual lottery date depends on various factors depending the volume of petitions and USCIS load. It can be anywhere in second week of April. For FY 2018, the actual H1B Lottery was done on April 11th, 2017 . We can expect anywhere around the same date like April 11th or April 13th.

How to find H1B visa 2019 Sponsors ?
It can be very hard to find a good employer and convince them to sponsor H1B to work in US with major unknown like H1B Visa lottery. Anyways, you would be in one of the three scenarios, if you are seeking a H1B Sponsor.

  • F1 Student in US : You can find an internship or co-op at an employer who can sponsor H1B visa and ask them to sponsor your H1B. You can continue to work on OPT once you graduate as well. You find the list of H1B Sponsoring companies using the tool
  • International Professionals  : If you are outside of US, it can be tricky with all the latest rules by Trump administration. Your best bet is to find an multi-national company ( MNC) and work through them to sponsor H1B visa. You may have hurdles inside the company with all the internal process, many waiting, etc. But, it is up to you to negotiate and ask them to take a chance. Many try the IT body shop route, where they ask them to file H1B. Rules have changed in the last few years and it is very risky move and can jeopardize your US hopes. Read comments on this H1B Companies Reviews article  to get an idea and  beware of such consulting companies to avoid fraud.
  • Important Note : We, as RedBu2US, DO NOT Provide any H1B sponsorship or guide anyone using professional services or fee. If anyone approaches you by saying our name, it is pure FRAUD…beware !

  2. Hi all, congrats to all got picked in lottery.
I just asked my DSO and she said my SEVIS has not been updated. Should I lose hope for this year? Currently on STEM OPT and master’s cap, end date: 06/2019.

    Thanks!!

    • No, mate. This process runs until USCIS says that their data entry is complete which happens in 1st week of May. Even after that until mid-May, people get receipts. You still have one month to go.

        • The lottery was there even before Trump. People just want to blame Trump for everything nowadays! In fact, you should be grateful to him as the number of applications went down because of him and because of that, your chances of getting selected went up!

  3. This is my last attempt. I don’t see any update on SEVP. Does the SEVP update mean data entry is done? Or is it a gradual process?

    • For premium case, H1 and H4 checks got cashed at the same time. I am not sure about regular processing. If you are interested to know, then H1 and H4, H4 EAD got approved at the same time.

I wish there was a tracking on all applications, Be it Picked/ on Hold/ rejected/duplicate(s). This lottery is a nerve-racking ordeal. Just be gentle with your self guys. You are already doing the best you can.

  4. I see that those who are already picked up in the lottery are mostly applied in California service center. Anyone picked up from Vermont?

  6. Can someone who has got the SEVP update and has checked with DSO for receipt number comment here. I was just wondering if that is something I should do or just be content and wait for the receipt number from lawyer. I know its a classic example of greediness to see the receipt number but I don’t want to annoy DSO for no reason as well. Just getting anxious to know for sure than to hope that SEVP update means getting picked. Thanks all for awesome comments on this blog. Very helpful.

  7. In the past, we can wait and be patient until the end of May. But this year we have the SEVP and the timeline is now much shorter. That being said, if the SEVP still has no updates by the end of this week, let’s look forward to next year.

    Good luck everyone!

  8. My OPT ends May 21, 2018 and still have no update of H1B. So If I enroll in CPT from the first week of May, is it going to affect my h1b process?

    • Bro Everyone gets an answer within 2 months (April 15th to June 15th -roughly). There will be 20K notices for AD and 65 for non Ad. If you just spread these numbers over 2 months period. AD will start getting approvals around last week or third week of April.

This is just a rough time line to give you some peace of mind. I don’t work for USCIS so i don’t know how they work but just the numbers and time period suggest the way i explained you.

No need for nasty sarcastic comment. Just here to help out a brother and ease his/her mind with a positive thoughtful comment.

          • Venkat bro – Don’t do that. I was in the same situation last year and without much research and messed up brain from all the news and waiting period i took this decision to enroll in CPT. Biggest mistake of my life. Even if i get selected My H1b in the later phase will get declined. ave your self bro. There wasn’t anyone to advice me during that time but choose wisely. This is your career you are playing with.

          • Please don’t go for day 1 CPT option. USCIS will make your life a living hell and will not grant you a h1b.

          • To make CPT clear. It’s not completely prohited to enroll in Day 1 CPT program if you are going for a level up degree and degree program requires practical training(school needs to have an accredited program).

This was confirmed by an immigration lawyer as well school DSO.

          • Don’t stay or work illegally. CPT is a great option. Some schools provide executive programs with day 1 CPT. Should always apply for CPT and work legally.

USCIS is not here to screw you, they are looking for people who deserve H1b.

          • CPT is only viable option for people coming from UG and enrolling in a MS program. People with already one masters degree will be at the receiving end of USCIS’s scrutiny.

    • Better start exploring European or Canadian headquarters. It takes awhile to obtain visas as they are lots of paperwork and HR process.

I didn’t win my 4th h1b lottery which resulted me being shipped off to the European office. I started the transfer process in June and didn’t get my European visa until Mid January.

European pay is a bit lower in IT but I can’t complain having 32 vacation days vs 15. Also you only need 2-3 years to get a permanent residency / unconditional work permit.

  10. Hey Guys – Can someone help me out with this SEVP login thing. I have a good idea about what it is and what SEVIS is but my question is where and how to log in.

Where to obtain the id and password and if someone can drop a link to the sevp login page i would really appreciate that.

    Thanks.

    • Your DSO should have sent an email with a link to activate your login. It is usually sent to your college email address. That link holds true for 30 days from the day it was sent. If you haven’t received that email, contact your DSO. You cant create an account without that email.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I just contacted my DSo and they said that SEVP is only for those who are on post completion OPT and STEM extension. I am not on any so they won’t provide me the SEVP login and Password. Hope this is helpful to some of us. Exact response fro DSO:

            “Hello,

The SEVP portal is ONLY for students currently on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT. Since you are not on OPT, you do not have access to the portal.

            Best,”

    • You should check your email with the subject: Optional Practical Training Approval – the next step. Create an SEVP Portal account.

It was sent by do-not-reply.SEVP@ice.dhs.gov last month

There’s a link in the email for your registeration.

    • I think you might have got the receipt number with your OPT/STEM application. How can your DSO get the receipt number. You are supposed to get from your employer/lawyers. Though you can check on USCIS website if it’s related to your petition.

      Reply
      • I have applied for STEM extension in March before my h1-b was filed. I have a different receipt number for that. This one she sent me starts with WAC1XXX___. I checked on USCIS case status. It says record does not exists. But that’s same for mine OPT STEM application as well.

        Reply
    • @HART Did you ask for a print of the I20? If not, in my understanding DSO can look into the system and see an H1B COS pending which also has the receipt number attached to it based on the data entered by the USCIS. I am not 100% sure about it but I think that’s the only way to get the receipt number from the DSO.

      Reply
      • No, I don’t need a new I-20 since my application for extension is pending as well. Whereas, regarding the H-1b, She said the update in SEVIS says “Change of Status” and has receipt number attached to it. I asked her to check only, after I saw Employment Authorization end date change in SEVIS Student Portal.

  13. Hey guys,

First time H1B application here, and I have a few questions which may seem basic, but the terminology you guys use on here confuses me.
    1. When is the lottery conducted and how will I be notified? I had an attorney and US employer sponsor me.
    2. Is the lottery conducted first for the 65,000 applicants and then adjudicated? Will the government pick up more applications if they are rejected ones currently in lottery?
    3. I see everyone talking about a portal, where is the link for this to get updates?

    Appreciate all your insight.

    Reply
    • 1. The lottery has been done and your lawyer/employer will get a receipt by end of May notifying whether you got through.

      2. The lottery is conducted first with some extra applications being drawn to account for some inevitable rejections. There is no waitlist, and the number of rejected ones are rolled over to the next year.

      3. Check SEVP portal. You should already have received an invitation link from your university; so use that to log in.

Oh the working man as you can see
That is what he was born to be
    Married to the working wife
That is what she’ll be all her life
    Never lived beyond their means
Nor sought assistance from their friends
Yet day and night through thick and thin
They work life out just to keep life in

    No matter friends whate’er befall
The poor folk they must work or fall
Through frost and snow through sleet and wind
They work life out just to keep life in

Do you see the women how make the gowns
For those in other parts of town
It’s a picture sorrowful to see
And I’m sure with me you will agree
    Meagre is our daily pay
To feed and clad a family with
She’s overworked she’s tired and thin
She works life out just to keep life in

Oh mischief mine where do you roam
When reason called you weren’t at home
If you take cheese from off the rat
Is he then free to hunt the cat
If free from union’s free from dues

  23. Hey guys. I wrote one song to describe all H1b people pain. Please leave feedback.

    —————–

I’m always ready for a war again
    Go down that road again
    It’s all the same
I’m always ready to take a life again
    You know I’ll ride again
    It’s all the same
Tell me who’s gon’ save me from myself
When this life is all I know
Tell me who’s gon’ save me from this hell
    Without you, I’m all alone

    Who gon’ pray for me?
    Take my pain for me?
    Save my soul for me?
    ‘Cause I’m alone, you see
If I’m gon’ die for you
If I’m gon’ kill for you
Then I’ll spill this blood for you, hey

    • You might assume that we do not know English, but be informed, we are quite proficient in the language. We are having some fun here, in case your current emotional state prevented you from discerning that.

Now, get down your high horses, stop using abusive words and get back to your desperation mode !

And yeah, before you even think about returning to continue your rant, take a deep breath… and F’ off !

  27. Hey Guys,

On the link sevp.ice.gov/opt/#/login, unfortunately I still see my OPT ending in July.

I guess this means that I did not get picked, correct?

  28. To those who have gotten the SEVP updated:

    Congratulations!

Would you care to share with us if you have a masters degree or not? and when did you see the change (i.e. what’s the time stamp of the changes made by USCIS under your History tab)?

  29. SEVIS and the SEVP Portal Information Sharing

The portal and SEVIS regularly share data. Data entered into the portal is sent immediately to SEVIS to update the student’s record. However, information comes from SEVIS to the portal once a day. Any updates to a student’s record in SEVIS will appear in the SEVP Portal the next day.

  30. Hey everyone,

I decided to call the SEVP help line and confirm if the update of the end date indicates being selected in the H1B lottery and they confirmed that it’s true! So to all who have seen the update, congratulations! My lawyer said that data entry of selected applications takes a few days so maybe there’s some hope for the rest of us who haven’t seen any updates on our SEVP portal.

    • It has been just two days since lottery (thurday and friday). Everything is manually updated. it is just a start. We should be seeing something this week.

  31. @R@j has posted update to his STEM OPT status to reflect his cap gap on student SEVP portal.

This is not sounding good for the STEM guys with expiring eads.

Keep posting SEVP updates guys. If this doesn’t get updated on the next couple of days, you should be good to start planning your alternative.

      • No. That is not possible because you wouldn’t be eligible for a cap gap.

Only cap gap updates are happening.

    • @SEVPPortalStatus I spoke with my other friends in the company and so far no one else has gotten that kind of update on the History section of SEVP Portal. Only one person has a new authorization but it was done on 04/08/2018. So it doesn’t make sense that it would be before lottery. Also it doesn’t say anything as to what has changed. So I believe they are still in the process of data entry. To all the third timers including @anxious I hope everybody gets picked up. In the mean time to be more precise the exact time stamp for my data entry by SEVIS is 04/13/2018 14:27:36.
