November 8th, 2022: US Embassy had Visa Fridays Q&A last week, below are the key updates from the same, including regular updates.

  • H1B, H4, L1, L2 Visa Slots: They said that due to high demand H and L visa appointments have long wait times and they fill quickly when released. The appointments are full for the coming months for H and L visa types. But, they will open more H and L slots as conditions allow. They may release slots on short notice as well, so they suggest checking the website regularly for availability.
  • F1 Spring 2023 Slots, Refused: Most of the discussion and questions were around refused slots for first-time refused applicants.
    • For first-time refused F1 applicants, they said that they will open visa appointment slots toward the end of the season. No specific date or week was stated by them.
    • As far as regular Spring 2023 slots go, they released a large batch and most of those slots are booked. The next big batch of slots will come later part of November. This is also in their FAQs
  • Fewer Slots in Delhi: They said that slots released are based on staff availability. Also, that’s the reason for long wait times at some consulate locations than others.
  • B1/B2 Visa Appointments, Renewals, Reschedules: They said that the demand for first-time B1/B2 was high and the current wait time is long. They are trying to add resources so that they can offer more appointments. No timelines were given for this.
    • They said that it is unlikely to have another batch of B1/B2 visa slots released in 2022 and say you might get lucky, if someone cancels.
    • They suggest keeping checking the website for any rescheduling of the appointment. They say some people cancel appointments and you may get lucky in rescheduling.
    • They said it can take anywhere from 10 to 30 days to get a passport with a US visa after the submission of documents for B1/B2 renewal.
  • IR1/CR1 Visas Processing: They clarified again regarding the confusion on some later submitted CR1 and IR1 applicants getting processed than the ones that were submitted before. They again confirmed that, except few exceptions, who got expedited approvals, they are processing in order as they were submitted. They say to be patient and it will be processed in the right sequence.

They say that there is still plenty of time for the Spring season and they will do their best. They also expect to have a record-breaking winter season for F1 visa interviews. For refused applicants also they will follow same process like Summer, but no dates were given on when they will exactly open.
  • IR1/CR1 Visas Processing: There is some confusion on some later submitted applicants getting processed than previous applicants. They say except few exceptions, who got expedited approvals, they are processing in order and not to worry. They say most categories are not being interviewed for DQ dates in January.
  • B1/ B2 Visa Appointments: They say that they are opening appointments whenever they can, but the demand is higher than what they can accommodate. They say that it is unlikely that they will release more slots in 2022 for first-time B1/B2 applicants. Small numbers may come if someone else cancels. They also say, if you have an emergency request, you can submit expedite request by attaching relevant proof. Also, if you have clearance received in visa annotation, you can request for expedite appointment for renewal.
  • How many times reschedule: They did not exactly tell you how many times you can reschedule in India, but said that, if you see the message on the top that this is the last opportunity, then it is your last option. FYI, they said in the previous facebook that they may change the times one can reschedule in India with new changes to system.
  • H1B, L Visa Slots : They say that they can’t say when they will open more slots as they have already released 100K slots. Also, they say it is unlikely that they will have more slots for November and December. They opened and they were quickly filled. They continue to say that you should take an H1B, H4 or L visa appointment that you get in the system, it could be for a later date like 2023, but just take that for now.
  • F1 Defer Admission – No need of visa : They confirmed that you do not need a new visa stamping again, if you already got F1 Visa stamping for Fall and for some reason if you defer to Spring for the same school. Your I-20 needs to be valid though during travel.

    • Agents Booking Slots: They continue to say that “you do not need an agent for booking and they are releasing bulk appointments to help general users book slots during batch release”. • US Embassy had Visa Fridays Q &A Session on September 22nd, 2022. Below is the summary of key takeaways from their responses.
    • H1B Visa, L Visa Slots:
      • The US Embassy did not clearly tell when they will open slots for December 2022 or for next year. They suggest keeping checking the CGI Federal website. All they says is they will opened “soon”.
      • They said they are finalizing their schedules and they will open slots for November and December 2022 as well. Again, on timing, they say “keep checking”.
      • They say that H1B and L visas are treated the same in their system, with exception of Blanket L visas processed only at Chennai. They say that they open appointments on a rolling basis.
      • They say they cannot share exact dates on when they will release dates for October to December. They try to release bulk slots now and then so that they do not disappear immediately…and again suggest to keep checking.
    • B1/B2 Visa Appointments: They have opened some slots for even 2025, but they confirmed that they are opening a part of the full capacity of the dates that are very far into the future like 2024, and 2025. They suggest checking the website as they plan to release more B1/B2 slots.
      • They said they moved away from Language specific appointments for B1/B2. Now all the appointments are in English. They suggest emailing ahead of time with the specific appointment information and language requirements so that they can work it out. See below screenshot.
    • F1 Visa – Spring 2023 Appointments: They said that they have not yet opened the appointment for Spring 2023. So, they suggest keeping checking and not panicking about dates for spring now. They are expecting a big Spring stamping season for F1 students as well. Also, they say, you can apply for F1 stamping in a third country, but they suggest you first check and book an appointment before traveling there.
    • December 2022 Slots – Various visa types: They have not released December slots yet for the current year and also future years for most of the visa types, including B1/B2. They say, it is their trickiest month and plan to release dates for December in various visa types in few weeks, so keep checking.
    • Single Slots vs. Bulk Slots: They say that single slots appear when someone cancels their appointment, but bulk slots appear when they are released by the Embassy/Consualte. If you are looking for 2 or more slots together, you need to wait for the bulk slots option, so that you can book. So, keep checking.
    • Using of Agents to book slots, Fraud: They clarified again that you may use agents to book appointments, but there is no need to use them. They have strategies to make it a level playing field for everyone and they will not share them with the public. Also, they suggest reporting fraud, if someone is taking advantage of the appointment system. See below screenshot for the exact text.
    • Visa Stamping outside of India like Canada or Mexico : They suggest to check the US Embassy or consult that is in that country for more info and secure an appointment, before going there.
    • Appointment Available, but not able to book : They say that usually VAC slot maybe available, but if they do not find an appointment for interview within 14 days of the VAC appointment, you will get the error message saying not available.

  1. Did not understand the value in allowing B1/2 with “clearance received” to raise expedite requests now. They still need to book a dummy slot for both OFC and Consular in order to qualify for raising an expedite request, correct? And they are not opening any slots for B1/2. When they do open, people will struggle to reserve a slot anyway. Am I missing something? Because my parent’s appointment got canceled during Covid as well, even though it’s been 1.5 years since I paid MRV fee, and my parent did not qualify for the 48 month Dropbox extension due to the “clearance received” annotation.

    • AM,
Yes, that is true you still need a slot. Frankly, you are right, it may not help, but as the dropbox slots are in high demand, maybe it might help. If you do get a slot, try it out.

  5. Hello. I am a US Citizen and I am applying for a B2 visa renewal for my mom. She is based in Chennai and qualifies for interview waiver under the new rules. I paid the visa fees on the USTravelDocs website on 24-Feb-2022 via NEFT and i still have not received a receipt to schedule an appointment for dropoff. There has been radio silence since i paid, my emails are not being answered and there is no other way to contact anyone for status. This impacts travel plans for many others who are depending on this renewal to go through

Could you please advise how to get a dropbox appointment at the earliest or who to contact to get an update? Just knowing what is happening and how long it would take would immensely help. This radio silence is very unnerving.

    Thanks in advance!

    • My parents paid the fees last year and are still waiting.. My parents qualify for interview waiver as well. They actually went to the Dropbox location in Chennai and the folks there informed them that they still need to get an appointment through the CGI website.

I do see appointment slots open for B2 at Chennai only in October 2022, but when I select the time and click on next, it keeps saying that there is no slot available. have not been able to get an appointment date thus far..

        • Hello Mr.Kumar,
I have been using visa grader for the last 2 months to look for any openings for drop boxes anywhere in India. 2 weeks ago the embassy released some dates that were green color on visa grader but when I logged in nothing was showing up on my page.
Also, I am confused between availability and recent activity. I see recent activity a few minutes ago on the page and when I log in no appointments available show up. also on the availability page dates are not turning green. I have my trip planned for India from April 17 but I don’t have appointment for a dropbox. I am very very disappointed, disgusted, and hopeless

It is sad reality, slots really get filled up quickly. Very few are opened and they go fast. The only thing I can think of is keep looking and hope you get lucky. I wish, they opened more slots.

  6. I am currently employed by employer A and have h1b from employer A.
I have plans to go for stamping (first stamping) but now I have an offer from employer B
Should I get my H1 B transfer before my stamping or should I get my stamp from employer A h1b and then get the transfer?

    What are the risks associated?

        • I qualify for dropbox appoinment. After paying required fees, while trying to schedule dropbox appointment, since late Oct’21, I used to see “<> IW” in the dropdown box. Seems like IW description in the dropdown box while scheduling a dropbox appointment has disappeared around mid Nov’21 and showing “< VAC” option. Either the dropbox appointments are not available or new slots are yet to be opened. I share the frustration of checking for open/available slots on regular basis with no luck. With a limit on no.of times onecan check in 24 hours and random timeline when slots are opened, if any, are causing more frustration. Hope Consulate opens enough dropbox appointments in near future

Once i received my extension denial i came to India and they applied once again but it got denied. I have changed my company (B)and they are going to apply for Cap exempt petition for remaining 5 Years.

1.Will the Twice denial from Company 1 will affect the process?
2.Do we need denial copies for applying the cap extent. Since i have stayed above my visa validity. As per company(A) policy they don’t provide denial reason and document for denial.

I am on H4 and went to India in 2017 and got stamping for company A till July 2019 as per the I797 at that time. Now I am planning to go to India alone on H4. Due to pandemic situation, the eligibility for Dropbox is 48 months from expiry of visa. Even though I qualify for Dropbox, I have a doubt regarding the employer change. The previous stamping was for company A and the one I will be going is for company C.

    1. Is the company change acceptable while going for Dropbox?
    2. Does that change my eligibility for Dropbox or will be a reason for my visa stamping rejection now?

  16. Hello,

I am desperately trying to schedule a drop box appointment at the New Delhi
VAC location for renewing my recently expired H-1B visa. I have been
monitoring the website (www.ustraveldocs.com) every single day (3-4 times)
for the last several weeks, but I am unable to see the calendar of
appointments. Has anyone recently gotten a drop box appointment for H-1B visa renewal? Also if someone has any updates on
when the visa office will resume operations and processing of dropbox
appointments, please let me know. It will be much appreciated!

    Thank you.

    • DS,
The travel ban is supposed to end on that date. We need to wait for confirmation on this. The visa stamping part depends on the slots availability and host of other things, that is not directly related.

    • You can have visa interview in different consulate so that you can 221g pending visas. If you are submitting your passport it will easily take 2 months to get your passport back. Better book a new appointment

  23. Hello all, I attended for H1B visa interview on September 9th, 2021, at the US consulate, Hyderabad.
At the end of the interview, the visa officer has kept my passport and informed me that my visa is under consideration for NIE and will let me know within 24hrs to 2days, and handed me a 221g white slip.
I haven’t received any reply back from them yet! Did anyone else experience a similar situation, if so typically how many days did it take to receive your passport back?
    Thanks in advance!

    • Hey Sonia,

I was able to book a H1b VISA stamping app for a NEW H1b visa stamping last Friday at the Kolkata Consulate (see below for my comment). At the time , at least for Kolkata consulate, there were quite a few slots available (both for biometric and in-person interviews). Now that the F1 rush is kinda over, I suspect the consulates are going to open up more & more dates for other VISA classes. I would suggest you keep checking. I am sure you will get one soon !

      Good Luck !

  35. It appears that in addition to 48 months from expiration of previous visa, another condition has changed. The last visa does not have to be issued in the ‘home country’ now.

The questionnaire now says: “Was your most recent H1B visa issued after January 1, 2008?”

    • Hi;

I was told by the US TRAVEL DOCS customer support that they may or may not send the cancellation email. It’s the responsibility of the individual who has the visa appointment to check his/her status online. Also I was told that the appointment cancellation can be done by the concerned a week before or even a day before the biometric appointment. Hope this info helps.
