- Record number of non-immigrant visas issued in India: US Consulates and Embassy issued more than 1 million non-immigrant visas in year 2024. This is the second time in a row. About 2 million Indians traveled to the US on visitor visas in the first 11 months of 2024. Read more at the US Embassy India website.
- Only One Appointment Rescheduling Allowed in India: Starting from January 1st, 2025 you can only reschedule your appointment once.
- When you pay the Visa Appointment Booking fee(Machine Redable Visa(MRV) Fee), you get a chance to book appointment at any location of your choice
- After the initial booking, you can only reschedule once.
- If you want to reschedule second time, you have to pay the Visa appointment booking fee again.
- Centralized processing of US Visa Cases in India: In order to increase efficiency in US Visa applications processing, the US Embassy has centralized the processing of US Visa cases as below at the respective US Consulates/Embassy in that city:
- First time visa Interview appointments for H1B, H4, L1, L2 centralized at Hyderabad
- First time Blanked L Visas are processed centrally in Chennai
- B1/B2 Dropbox (interview waiver) appointments centralized in New Delhi
- H1B, H4, L1, L2 Dropbox (interview waiver) appointments centralized in Chennai
- No impact on processing: This centralized processing does not impact how the visa cases are processed. Only for some Dropbox cases, if they request an in-person interview, you may need to go to the location where it is processed.
- No impact on submission at any location: Also, this centralized processing does not impact the Dropbox submission location. Dropbox stamping applicants can submit their documents free of cost at any of the five US Visa application centers in Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, or New Delhi. Also, for a fee of 850 INR, they can submit documents at any of the six locations at Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Chandigarh, Pune, or Jalandhar.
- Access Limitation Warning due to plug-ins or extensions: If you are using any extensions or plugins that automatically capture US Visa slots info or use Robotic Automation, you may get the “Access Limitation” error. If you encounter such an error, you must remove the extension or plugin and then try it after waiting for 24 hours. Installing these extensions is classified as Prohibited conduct as per their terms and conditions.
- When can you request an Emergency Student Visa Appointment? The US Embassy gives guidance stating that if you cannot get a regular appointment and your program start date is within 60 days, then you must consider reaching out to the school to defer admission. If that is not possible, then they suggest requesting an emergency appointment by submitting I-20 and DS-2019 as proof. They say, the appointments are very limited and would be given only in exceptional circumstances.

- US Visa Dropbox Criteria 48 months from Expiry Status Continues to be Valid: The US Department of State changed the Dropbox eligibility criteria to 48 months from expiry instead of 12 months to reduce processing times. After it was introduced, they continued to extend the same for 2021, 2022, and 2023 and finally extended this indefinitely until further notice in December 2023. December 18th, 2024: The US Embassy announced a big change to the number of times you can reschedule an appointment. Below are the details
- Starting from January 1st, 2025, you can only reschedule your US Visa appointment only once. You will be allowed to schedule an appointment at location of your choice once, but after that you can only reschedule once.
- If you want to reschedule your appointment second time or in case you miss the appointment, you will need to book a new appointment by paying the application fee.
- They have done this to reduce the US Visa processing wait times.

Did not understand the value in allowing B1/2 with “clearance received” to raise expedite requests now. They still need to book a dummy slot for both OFC and Consular in order to qualify for raising an expedite request, correct? And they are not opening any slots for B1/2. When they do open, people will struggle to reserve a slot anyway. Am I missing something? Because my parent’s appointment got canceled during Covid as well, even though it’s been 1.5 years since I paid MRV fee, and my parent did not qualify for the 48 month Dropbox extension due to the “clearance received” annotation.

Yes, that is true you still need a slot. Frankly, you are right, it may not help, but as the dropbox slots are in high demand, maybe it might help. If you do get a slot, try it out.
My drop box appointment is scheduled for Aug 3rd 2022. How do I find out whether its a placeholder appointment or regular dropbox appointment. I am currently in the USA and dont want to risk travelling if not needed and get appointment cancelled and stuck there. Thanks

If you booked in the last couple of months, it should be a real one. You can call the customer service or email them to get confirmation.
Is it possible to reserve an in-person interview appointment even if I am eligible for Dropbox? (in case of in-person slots being available earlier than dropbox slots)

Hello. I am a US Citizen and I am applying for a B2 visa renewal for my mom. She is based in Chennai and qualifies for interview waiver under the new rules. I paid the visa fees on the USTravelDocs website on 24-Feb-2022 via NEFT and i still have not received a receipt to schedule an appointment for dropoff. There has been radio silence since i paid, my emails are not being answered and there is no other way to contact anyone for status. This impacts travel plans for many others who are depending on this renewal to go through
Could you please advise how to get a dropbox appointment at the earliest or who to contact to get an update? Just knowing what is happening and how long it would take would immensely help. This radio silence is very unnerving.

My parents paid the fees last year and are still waiting.. My parents qualify for interview waiver as well. They actually went to the Dropbox location in Chennai and the folks there informed them that they still need to get an appointment through the CGI website.

It is sad reality, slots really get filled up quickly. Very few are opened and they go fast. The only thing I can think of is keep looking and hope you get lucky. I wish, they opened more slots.

I qualify for dropbox appoinment. After paying required fees, while trying to schedule dropbox appointment, since late Oct’21, I used to see “<> IW” in the dropdown box. Seems like IW description in the dropdown box while scheduling a dropbox appointment has disappeared around mid Nov’21 and showing “< VAC” option. Either the dropbox appointments are not available or new slots are yet to be opened. I share the frustration of checking for open/available slots on regular basis with no luck. With a limit on no.of times onecan check in 24 hours and random timeline when slots are opened, if any, are causing more frustration. Hope Consulate opens enough dropbox appointments in near future

At last i got my company to process my H1B cap exempt petition. I travelled to US Jan 2017 to Jan 2018. Once i received my extension denial i came to India and they applied once again but it got denied. I have changed my company (B)and they are going to apply for Cap exempt petition for remaining 5 Years.
1.Will the Twice denial from Company 1 will affect the process?
2.Do we need denial copies for applying the cap extent. Since i have stayed above my visa validity. As per company(A) policy they don’t provide denial reason and document for denial.
My Husband who is on H1B was in company A from Jan 2015 to Oct 2017, company B from Oct 2017 to Oct 2018, company C from Oct 2018 till date. I am on H4 and went to India in 2017 and got stamping for company A till July 2019 as per the I797 at that time. Now I am planning to go to India alone on H4. Due to pandemic situation, the eligibility for Dropbox is 48 months from expiry of visa. Even though I qualify for Dropbox, I have a doubt regarding the employer change. The previous stamping was for company A and the one I will be going is for company C.
1. Is the company change acceptable while going for Dropbox?
2. Does that change my eligibility for Dropbox or will be a reason for my visa stamping rejection now?
Don’t take risk, if past H1B employer has withdrawn status, you H4 even if it unexpired, it is not a valid.

The travel ban is supposed to end on that date. We need to wait for confirmation on this. The visa stamping part depends on the slots availability and host of other things, that is not directly related.

You can have visa interview in different consulate so that you can 221g pending visas. If you are submitting your passport it will easily take 2 months to get your passport back. Better book a new appointment

Hello all, I attended for H1B visa interview on September 9th, 2021, at the US consulate, Hyderabad.
At the end of the interview, the visa officer has kept my passport and informed me that my visa is under consideration for NIE and will let me know within 24hrs to 2days, and handed me a 221g white slip.
I haven’t received any reply back from them yet! Did anyone else experience a similar situation, if so typically how many days did it take to receive your passport back?

The account number details for NEFT OR mobile details for IMPS MMID will be valid till that given date. After that date, those details might change. As per my understanding, that’s the purpose of that date.
That expire date you are referring is for exchange rate of usd and inr for visa fee.

I was able to book a H1b VISA stamping app for a NEW H1b visa stamping last Friday at the Kolkata Consulate (see below for my comment). At the time , at least for Kolkata consulate, there were quite a few slots available (both for biometric and in-person interviews). Now that the F1 rush is kinda over, I suspect the consulates are going to open up more & more dates for other VISA classes. I would suggest you keep checking. I am sure you will get one soon !

It appears that in addition to 48 months from expiration of previous visa, another condition has changed. The last visa does not have to be issued in the ‘home country’ now.

Yes, you can. Request EA based on Kids vaccination. Get a letter from US doctor and use that for EA.

I live in US on h1b visa, and my wife is in India. How can i setup her visa interview? I’m not able book any dates as soon as I try to select a date then next screen has a message of no dates available. Is the embassy closed?

For those who received appointment cancellation email, how many days before your appointment did you receive the cancellation email?
Hi;
I was told by the US TRAVEL DOCS customer support that they may or may not send the cancellation email. It’s the responsibility of the individual who has the visa appointment to check his/her status online. Also I was told that the appointment cancellation can be done by the concerned a week before or even a day before the biometric appointment. Hope this info helps.

No its not considered as attempt. Mine was cancelled once and I have confirmed officially that cancelled appointment does not count as attempt .
