When I applied for my Indian passport many years ago, the entire process was paper-driven, and there was a lot of red tape in the process. I had to stand in line for a very long time, I had to fill in big sets of papers and the processing time at Passport Seva Center was very long. This has evolved over the years, and the process is entirely digital now and very seamless.
In this article, I will share our experiences at a typical Passport Seva Kendra(PSK) based on my experience applying new passports for my kids and renewing my Indian passport. We will outline the process, share real photos from a PSK on how it works.
Before you go to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), you must register for an account at the Indian Passport Website and book an appointment. You must visit the PSK on the day of the appointment at the respective time. The below article outlines the steps

The high level process is very much the same across all the PSKs, just the way they define at each of them at the entrance step varies slightly. Below are examples of process flows diagrams at few of the most popular PSKs across India for your reference:

Step 1: Applicant Entry, Security Check at the PSK Entrance
In this step, the security personnel will check your bags and documents and verify if you have an appointment or not. They look at the appointment letter with the Application Reference Number (ARN) and the bar code. If you do not have the correct appointment letter and time does not match, they will not let you in.
This is a basic security check that is very much standard in any of the govt offices or private companies. You can expect to see some queues here as well, if there are more people. What they do is, send the people in batches of time slots so that it does not get crowded inside. Below is the screenshot of how it looks at Mumbai PSK. It may look different depending on the entrance.
Step 2: Issuance of Token for Document Verification
Once the security guard lets you enter the premises, you will be asked to stand in line, then they look for the document that you printed out from website, which has the appointment details They will suggest you to do self-attestation on the pages you are supposed to do like Passport first and last pages, etc.
The outsourcing companies handle this part and they do it very efficiently. It is either TCS personnel or some other vendor’s team, who will verify your documents and let you complete the signatures and any other stuff. They will collect your documents and place them in a file and give you a token number. They will ask you do all the signs, put them in order and get your copies, etc. Usually there will be a copier machine here to make copies, print anything you want. This is what they call “Form Selling”
Be mindful as they shout your name, and you have to pay attention. Once you get the token, then, you enter another chamber where the process is defined. You need to show the token to a security guard and he will let you in. It can take about 10 to 15 min here to get the token number.
The token clearly states step-by-step where to go. It says A -> B -> C, indicating where you start and where you end. All the sections A, B and C are color coded. You first enter Section A.
Step 3: Stage I – “A” Counter: Processing Zone

You have TV monitors displaying your token and the corresponding booth where you need to enter. TCS personnel will take care of capturing your photo, verifying documents, organizing them and having them ready in a file. As you need to do online payment, no need to worry about anything about payment for application. Really nice TCS team, they are very helpful and courteous. They will only take the required documents and return if something is not required. This is done in a section like Cubicles in typical office with one side open. It takes about 10 min here. If you have something wrong when you filled application online, this is the time to get it corrected.
Step 4: Stage II – “B” Counter: Verification Zone
- Documents Verification
Once you are done with that, you need to go to Section B, where you will have to wait for sometime for your token to be called. Again, you need to watch TV monitors to see where your token would be called. As this is done by Government employees, it takes time here, they are slow and some of them were not at their desk. I waited for about 15 min and then the guy just verified the file for about 5 seconds and did a signature and asked me to go to next section. It takes about 15 min time at “B” Counter.
Step 5: Stage III – “C” Counter: Granting Zone
- Interview with Assistant Passport Officer, Grant of Passport
Well, this was the most frustrating section of the whole process. I ended up waiting for about 1 hr to 1 hr 20 min here. It was just slow as hell. There were only two old guys, one of the guys did not know how to use a PC, they called a guy to turn on computer…it was pathetic. Anyways, they let you wait for a very long time and you need to keep checking the monitor. They will verify the documents once again and tell the decision. If everything is fine, they will ask you to go to the acknowledgement/ feedback counter. If not, they will ask you to get the required documents. You will be asked to fill out a feedback form and leave the premises. It hardly takes 5 min here.
Overall the process takes about 30 min until section B and the last one takes about 1.5 hrs. overall the process should take about 2 hrs. If there are more people in Section C, you could be out by 1 hr or maybe 1.5 hr. TCS team does a great job by doing work swiftly without any lag. The bottleneck is the last section where Govt Employees work.

Tips for Better Experience at Passport Seva Kendra
- Carry a ball point pen, you may need it to sign. If you have not done.
- Make sure you do self-attestation of the passport pages and other documents that are required to do. It will save some last minute hurry when you are in the line.
- Carry photo copies of all the original documents like your address proof, marriage certificate, etc. At Hyderabad, you have a copier inside to take photo copies, but be prepared.
- Do NOT need to go early to the passport Seva Kendra, they will not let you inside. You just need to be there at respective reporting time.
- They will allow cell phones and remote control car keys inside the passport office, do not need to worry about these things. You need to turn them to silent mode.
- You do NOT need an agent, you can do everything on your own. Just need to carry the right documents. Agents do not really take you inside or do anything. They will just guide you and maybe get you a slot.
Latest Tips from Readers :
- If your Aadhar card is new, there may be a situation where the government database is not linked. So, if you have a recently issued Aadhar card, carry a backup accepted document for proof of address.
- For using private bank statements as proof, you need to have your passport size photo with a bank stamp over it. Also, if you have to re-submit certain documents there is a separate time for files that are on hold, so not to worry too much.

(1) I need to get my status changed as married and get my spouse name added. My wife already has my name added in her passport. What all do i need to carry? I have a marriage certificate. Should i carry a copy? Does it need to be attested? If yes, does it to be notarized? Do I need to carry a copy of wife’s passport?
(2) My address has not changed. However I just want to add “1st Floor” in the address. Can that be done without any address documents?
(3) Do i need a class 1 gazetted office letter for tatkal?

You will have to carry marriage certificate orignal and 1xerox thereof self attested alongwith copy of current address proof (xerox and orignal for verification) no other documents are required for tatkal process in ur case

I had applied for a fresh passport 2 months back, Guy on counter B has put my application on the hold as my name on my original copy of birth certificate is not visible so he told me to get a new birth certificate from mcf and come back within 1 year. But today i got email from passport.admin that i have only 2 days to do further proceeding otherwise my online application will be automatically deleted by the system.
what does that mean ? are they gonna cancel my application if i can’t submit my new birth certificate within 2 days? do i have to worry about online application deletion because my application is on hold? and do i have to take another appointment date or can i visit PSK with the birth certificate any day without an appointment ?

I applied for passport two months back and they kept my passport on hold because I don’t have birth certificate.Now I have it.But the problem is when they kept my account on hold they took aadhar card as my address proof but my address proof in aadhar card is different from what I have registered. The application was put on hold by PSK official asking us to get the bank statement ( PSU Bank’s Passbook we have shown as Address Proof ) for last one year . So postal id also has a address of old house in Hyderabad. I am in Hyderabad and the sister for whom we want to apply for passport is in pune. My questions.

I will go to PSK with original date of birth. B section done my file and put date to go C section. Then, i go to C section, they again check my complete file and ask me to submit an affidavite for 2 date of birth in passport file and fine of 5000/- then, they submit my file. Yes u can definately applied for Passport from Pune but u will have to give proof of ur present add viz Pune. If ur add is short I mean if u are residing at Pune less than 1 year than u will have to also mention ur previous add viz Jhansi.

You will have to apply for passport at concerned PSK of Tamil Nadu since as per ur ide and if ur add proof is of TN. The subject of ur job which was in Karnataka has nothing to do. However you may furnish Karnataka add if ur stay at TN falls short in application form.

If u already had a passport befote and is lost?damahed then u have to submitt agfifavit as per foat annexure L. If u had earlier applied for passport amd the passport was not issued for any reasons then u have toention only file no. There is no such affidavit

I need to renew my passport which was issued from Kolkata but I currently live in Delhi for the past 3 years. Since I am staying in a rented acco, I would like to retain the old Kolkata address in the passport while renewing the same in Delhi. As address proof, I only have bank account statement of HDFC Bank. Will this be suffient as an address proof as all my other docs are of Kolkata. My passport is due for expiry in next 20 days and hope I can still apply for renewal.

You have not mention that you are applying for a fresh passport or renewal anyway if you are applying for a fresh passport than they might have told you to bring a fresh birth certificate viz computer generated BC. If you have applied for re-issue than the question of birth certificate does not arise as the birth date on your old PP is acceptable as proof of date of birth

I have an account in Central Bank which I used to frequently Use, 2 Years back I stopped Using it as HDFC was not convienent and we shifted on a rented house a year back.
I have no Ration card now as we sold our house I have changed the address in my central bank account to the current rental address and i have an adhaar card less than a year old and Driving licence as well.
Can I use my old central bank account, Adhar card (Lessthan a year) driving licence and Pan card as documents to have my passport reissued in Tatlak on my rented house. (for the above mentinoed documents the address is of the rented house )

I have applied for Tatkal passport on 2nd June. I am in urgent need of the passport. My police verification is done.Yesterday I had been to the RPO . In the counter they told me my VC has gone for verification by post. Then I met the RPO in person, Handed over an application. He said he will dispatch the passport tomorrow which means today. Earlier my passport status in IVR was police has completed verification but now it says passport is under review at regional passport office. Even the online status is the same. I am very much concerned. Nishulk advice please tell me what does it mean? Will they really dispatch my passport? Should I again visit the RPO?
You should visit RPO again verification of VC is done on landline phone in ur case as u said police verification has also been done then the ? of VC verification has nothing to do.

1. Bank statement and passbook affixed with my photo(joint account as well)
2. Ration card where my name is included as secondary since it is my parents name
3. First, last and ECN pages
4. Birth certificate and PAN card
All these documents original and 2 xerox copies self attested…
Do i need to carry the application form in view/submitted application area where i find i need to affix a photograph and sign there aswell..??
Apart this my signature is varied from the old passport and now everywhere i have common signature from the old passport which is updated in banks as well.. kindly let me know do i need some stuff to clear this signature issue!!!

Police verification will be done even if ur house is nearby your old house or is within same police station but u should not worry

For poliice verification.. is that same as police clearance certificate… normally how long it will take to get back the passport in hand considering 30th june is myu appointment date under normal category.. any idea!!!
You have to carry reciept clicking Print Application Receipt which is before Viev/Print Submitted form it shows ur appointment date time and payment you have made it will take 45 days to get ur passport later u can apply for Police clearance certificate or PCC no appointment is necessary and u will get same day. but u will have to visit PSK between 9 AM to 11 AM which is there walk in hour,

PLEASE HELP: In my VC the government official’s mobile number and telephone and fax number are given, however, the TCS official at PSK did not put the mobile number in the VC form online and in place of telephone he put the fax number and the telephone number in place of fax number, inspite of me correcting him repeatedly.
Now I am concerned, while verifying if they refer to the online form(There was one online form for VC that the officer was filling up seeing the physical document), then they will never get through the telephone number and the mobile number is not there on online form , it is in physical VC that I submitted. Will they refer to the original physical form and call the concerned person on his mobile? Otherwise will my passport be held up?
VC verified only on telephone No mention in ur VC I dont think telephone no is mention online by PSK.
I want to apply for tatkal passport, I have all the documents ready with me including Annexure F and I card of the person who gave Annexure ‘F’. I am being sent back for past couple of days giving some or the other lame excuses. I have another appointment on 3rd. One person in the front desk before sending my file has put a question mark on profession mentioned in annexure ‘F’. I am a freelancer, hence, I have mentioned just my profession and mentioned self employed in application form as I had to choose that option in eform. Moreover, the fax and reference numbers are written by hand.
Nishuladvice could you please guide me so that I can successfully submit my application on 3rd. Do i have to take any extradocument or affidavit for above mentioned reasons?

Annexure-I is also required for tatkal Passport application which u have not mention in ur query. Passport seva Kendra authority verifies the Annexure-F details on landline Phone. There is no problem if Fax No Is written by hand. Reference No Is put by Hand. Hope the problem will be solved.

Does it matter if in online form I have written self employed and in Annexure ‘F’ , my profession is written as Trainer? Last time when I had been to PSK, they have put a question mark in both places , on self employed in application form and on trainer in Annexure ‘F’. I am confused. I do not want to delay the passport application. Please if you reply asap it will be of great help as I have an appointment of tomorrow.

Yes you will have to wait for police report ,Passport Office only issue PCC on basis of police report.

I’m just back from an appointment at psk in hyderabad. I waited for 4 hours on the day after getting token in the waiting area (seated on chairs in ac hall with 100 people). If you want the appointment day to go fast apply under tatkal. Be there 30 mins before your appointment time with all documents, that way you should finish before their lunch break. Tatkal should (not fully sure as I went under normal!) also entitle you to early police verification which will be mandatory for a fresh passport.
For ur information Tatkal Passport fresh cannot be proccesed unless accomponied by Verification Certificate and Std affidavit Annex-I

On the document for Proof Of Date Of Birth, he was born in 1935 and has no birth certificate, certificate issued by govt authority or school leaving certificate. He is nt qualified for Appendix A.
Is proof for Date of Birth required for reissue of passport and what else can he submit for proof?
No birth proof document is required for reissue of ur Father passport as it is alrrady mention in old passport which is accept able. only latest add proof is reqd.
Thanks very much Nishulk for your advice. You are doing us all a great service. While taking documents to the psk center, do we need to take the supplementary form as well? I did not fill in anything online for the supplementary form since no name change or address change or anything on it was applicable for my father. I have filled in only the main passport application form.

I have an appointment at Toli Chowki psk on 28.5.14 for re-issue to remove Ecr. My present address is different from old address. Since I moved to new address 3 months ago the only address proof I have is past 2 months telephone bill. Will that do? I read in another article on this site that phone bill should be of past year also.
Will they issue new passport for ecr removal or will they just re-stamp?
One year stay address proof is not mandatory to remove ECR stamp from your passport. only supporting documents for deletion of ECR will be required.

They will issue new book with validity of 10 years. fill form of reissue.

I have also put my spouse name in the application form and I’m taking marriage certificate.

And this friday is my submission date as passport kendre center, could anyone please explain me the process of what and how long they check the certificate in the passport counter.

My passport is about to expire.i’ve already got a permanent address and a current address.but right now i am away from the current address mentioned on passport for study purposes.Is it mandatory that i need to change my current address during re-issue to the place where i am currently studying(which i gonna be for hardly another year),or can i leave it with the same old current address as written on my passport?
