Experience 2: H1B with Dropbox at New Delhi

My Dropbox Experience:
New Delhi – July 13th

Submitted all documents. The VAC representative asked me if I qualified for NIE. I said I wasn’t sure. He said I should check with employer. I said that NIE is optional and that I can’t reach out to my employer now as it’s outside or working hours in the US. Asked him to accept my documents as is – without NIE. He agreed.

3 days later got an email from embassy stating that my visa application was approved. In addition I have been given a NIE approval also.

I am quite surprised to be honest. I was working with my employer to file for NIE by email. This saves me some time and effort.

Not sure if there are similar reports already but thought I should share. Wish you all good luck!

Wife’s H4 interview at Delhi:

Experience 10: H1B Renewal at Mumbai (USC Wife)

Status: visa approved

I booked an interview appointment because my Dropbox appointments got cancelled twice and wasn’t able to get one again.

Travelled from HYD to BOM with a negative RTPCR. First stayed in a hotel 20 mins away from the consulate.

Biometrics: July 16
Smooth. In and out in 5 minutes. But traveling to the location was a nightmare. Mumbai is flooded thanks to monstrous thunderstorms hitting it every day. So I checked into Sofitel hotel on July 18 as I didn’t want to risk missing my appointment.

Visa Interview: July 19
Got in 30 mins before my appointment time and waited for nearly 45 mins. Staff was managing everything efficiently. Lots of F1 applicants and they were getting approvals however not before they were grilled with questions about their occupation, parents’ occupation, education funding and University coursework, etc.

Here’s how my interview went:

VO: Good morning. I20 please
Me: Hey. I’m a H1B applicant.

VO: Okay sry. I797 and passport please.
Me: Here. I have all my I797s and this is not my first time applying.

VO takes the passport and checks my previous Visa.

VO: You also did your Masters ?
Me: Yes, at X University

VO: What do you do at X company?
Me: Explained nature of the team and job duties

VO passes me a pamphlet containing workers rights. I began reading through it.

VO: In house?
Me: Yes

VO: How long have you been with them?
Me: Been 5 years now.

VO: Have you heard of NIE?
Me: Well yes but I’m married to a US Citizen so I didn’t need one.

VO: Oh okay. May I see her passport?
Me: Yes, passed a copy.

Here’s what he asked then:
How did you guys meet?
How long have you known each other?
What does she do now?
When did you guys get married?
Do you have a certificate?

I answered them all and passed on the certificate.

VO congratulates me on getting married and approves my Visa.

Tips for Mumbai:

  1. If you’re traveling from out of state it is best to stay in Sofitel or Trident. They’re literally beside the consulate. You will not have to worry about rains and missing your appointment. The situation in Mumbai is not very good.
  2. Be confident and enjoy your conversation. Be honest because you can’t cover a lie with another. Ultimately, if you deserve it you’ll get it.

I had been waiting for 4 months, been through a lot of stress just like you guys.

Experience 11: H1B with Dropbox at New Delhi (Applied from US)

Initial Scenario : My H1B Visa was expired in July 2019. I had plans to come to India in Summer 2020 to get the renewal done but Coronavirus. Eventually, I booked a slot for April 26, 2021 and booked my tickets. One week before the scheduled date, Delhi government imposed a lockdown, and I had to cancel my plans. I rescheduled the dropbox IW to July 2, 2021.
April 30 : The travel ban for H1B was signed.
June 20 : I waited until Mid June to decide, if I should travel to India. Around June 20, I got to know about NIE.
June 24 : I wrote the letter justifying NIE and following Amazon Template. I sent out the email to Delhi Embassy’s NIE email address. I DID NOT mention I was in the US, as they do not ask that in their template. In addition to the usual artifacts needed, I mentioned that my VISA is expired and I am planning to attend IW on Jul 2 and also attached the current I-797. I attached my COVID-19 Vaccination Card.
June 27 : Following multiple telegram groups, I was able to reschedule my IW appointment to Jul 14, giving me some time.
July 1 : Received an email from Embassy stating my NIE was approved from Jul 11- Aug 9 with single entry.
Sometime between July 2 – July 8 : NIE was retroactively changed to 12 months expiration with multiple entries.
July 9 : Flew to India.
July 14 : Dropped my documents to Delhi VAC. They asked for letter justifying NIE, I told them I already have it approved and tried to give them the copy of the email approval. However, they wanted the letter justifying NIE. I was carrying that too, so gave them. This is the same NIE letter as I sent initially in the Email.
July 19 : Received an email stating that my visa is approved along with NIE for 12 months.
My Learnings:
For people who are in the US and wondering if they should apply for NIE from US, I’d recommend them to do so. There are no rules on that. This will probably give them a peace of mind.
It is extremely difficult to get an appointment first time or IW right now. So, in case if you have an appointment, I’d recommend to use that up or reschedule if possible. Follow the various Telegram groups, those are your best bet.
There is risk in everything, even with pre-approved NIE. Maybe the risk is mitigated a little bit with a pre-approved NIE. My personal opinion is that NIE will be the backdoor entry for traveling to/from India for another couple of months, and I do not personally see this ban getting lifted anytime soon, as the US government is making adjustments to NIE instead of working on removing the Ban (for e.g. changing 1 month to 12 months, single time entry to multiple times for NIE exempted folks). Having said that, please do according to what is best for you, and how much risk you are ready to take.

Experience 12: H1B with Dropbox at Hyderabad

Had my Dropbox appointment at Hyderabad today (after almost 60+ days of waiting for a slot). Wanted to share my experience with you guys – hopefully it might help someone.

  1. Appointment at 10:30…they called everyone inside at sharp 10. So be there atleast half an hr beforehand since it’s first come first serve basis. There were about 15-20 ppl standing in the queue, not more than that.
  2. No phones and no smart watches allowed inside. Need to place them inside a locker, else give it to someone who might accompany you. They were pretty strict about that.
  3. Had location listed as chennai in my ds160 but ended up getting Dropbox at Hyderabad.
Initially I was confused about this.
But no questions asked in the VAC..it is totally fine to have a different city in ds160 vs Dropbox….no need for new ds160.
  4. Following were the documents that they asked me for:

Ds160 confirmation letter
Dropbox confirmation letter
NIE letter (gave them the letter provided by employer)
Old and new passports
Current and previous i797s
2 copies of photos
Employment verification letter

Asked me thrice if I’m working for the same employer as last time or not (answered yes)

Took my passport and first page of both i797s along with NIE and employment letters.

Told me that I should hear back from them in 2 weeks.

All the best to everyone 😊

Experience 24: H1B with NIE at Chennai

Booked regular appointment during April 2021. It was relatively easy to get the appointments at that time.

BIOMETRIC APPOINTMENT ON JULY 19TH:
Went in at 7:45AM and came out at 8:05AM.

Documents asked – DS160 Confirmation, Passport and Appointment confirmation.

CONSULAR INTERVIEW ON JULY 20TH:
Went in at 8:05AM and came out at 8:35AM.

No waiting, directly went to VO after security check.

VO: Pass me your passport and i797A document.
Me: Sure
VO: What does your company do?
Me: Leading American semiconductor company which produces GPUs and CPUs for automotive sector, cloud business and consumer electronics.
VO: What is your position and salary?
Me: Silicon Design Engineer-2 and xxx per annum
VO: Where is your office in US?
Me: Specific location and headquarters location
VO: Is there any hardware or devices that can be accessed only from that location? Do you have to be there for that?
Me: There are some FPGA machines which we use for emulation that can be accessed from only within US. Without this access my work will slow down considerably. It’s important for me to be there.
VO: Took time to type the details.
Me: Asked if she needs NIE or Employment verification letter.
VO: No, I have enough information to approve your visa. I am approving it with NIE so that you can travel whenever you feel is the best time. Read the instructions in the booklet and welcome to USA.
Me: Thank you, have a good day.

It was a smooth experience overall. The lady was extremely calm and gave me time to answer the questions with ease.
