Experience 1: H1B with 221g at New Delhi

I wanted to share my experience as my Visa got approved yesterday.

Drop Box appointment: April 16th
April: 20th: Case status changed to refused.
From then onwards, Called them N number of times but I got the same standard response that my Visa is undergoing administrative processing.

After a month on May 6th I got an email to pick up my passport, but it turned out to be a 221g with Presidential proclamation.
Again followed up with them almost once in every 5 days until mid July. Got the Same default response every time. Also meanwhile, applied for NIE exemption, and followed up on that as well. But no response what so ever.

Finally, by listening to few people in this group, I filled out a new ds160 and booked a new inperson slot at Delhi on July 27th.

VO: Asked about my job duties
Me: Explained.
Vo: asked my employer letter, Client letter, etc
Me: Provided all
VO: Had few questions on my OPT and Wanted the I983 docs of my Stem Opt.
And issued another 221g.
Me: Before leaving, I asked if I can provide other docs as well.
VO: Yes
ME: took advantage of it and provided all my docs to strengthen my case, W2’s, Paystubs, Employer issued NIE letter, etc

Dropped the i983docs the very next day on July 28th at VAC.
July 30th: case changed to Administrative processing. Also, got an email with an NIE exemption approval.
August 2nd: status changed to Issued.
August 4th: Got an email to pick up my passport.
August 5th: Picked my passport which was printed with Nie Exemption.

Hope this helps. Thank you all and Good Luck.

Experience 2: H1B with pending 221g at New Delhi

I got my visa approved at Delhi consulate while pending 221g at Hyd.

Aug1 – biometrics
Aug2 – interview (received NIE approval in email about 3hrs after interview)
Aug4 – received text ‘ready for passport pickup’

VO questions:

  1. Asked for passport and I797
  2. Which company do you work for?
  3. What’s your salary?
  4. What do you do?
  5. Highest education?
  6. Submitted NIE letter and VO gave it a glance.
VO typed in the system for about 1 min and said your visa has been approved.

I then asked if I receive my NIE approval with VISA?
VO said it will all be handled electronically.

Picked up my passport today.

Good luck everyone.

Experience 3: H1B + H4 with Dropbox at New Delhi

Delhi VAC Dropbox experience, 4th Aug-

  • Appt was @ 13:00, they allowed to go inside @ 12:30
  • 2 queues inside, Dropbox and Biometric
  • Dropbox queue was long, my turn came around 13:45.
  • After getting the token I had to sit inside for 15-20 min.
  • At the Dropbox counter she asked to provide all documents I have for Dropbox.
  • I gave Both passports (H1/H4) and 2 photos, and a single copy of each document (Appt confirmation, all prior I797, DS160 confirmation, visa copy, employment letter, NIE letter)
  • She checked and asked for another pair of the latest i797, employment letter, and NIE letter for H4 dropbox. So better to carry extra copies.
  • She collected all and said goodbye.
  • Fingers crossed for +ve response. 🤞🏼

Experience 4: H1B with Dropbox at New Delhi

Dropbox Experience:

  1. Fill DS 160 in April for Chennai with intended travel date as June first week and started looking for appointment in Chennai after paying appointment fee.
  2. Had plan to travel first week of May, but I don’t see any appointment in Chennai, so I went with Hyderabad.
  3. Due to COVID-19 spike in May, I canceled my appointment in Hyderabad and started waiting for cases graph to come down
  4. And again started looking for appointment with different DS160 (Chennai) with intended travel date as Aug 29 in July first week.
  5. Updated new DS 160 in appointment portal and start looking, got Dropbox appointment this time in Delhi for Aug 5th at 12 PM slot.
  6. Booked my flight from US to India via Qatar for July 30th with return as Aug 29th (Negative COVID test is mandatory 48hrs while boarding initial flight in US and again COVID test is needed in India as we have transit in Doha – Mid East)
  7. After reaching India, spend couple of days with family.
  8. Again flight from Home town to Delhi on Aug 4th night (I don’t have flight on appointment before my appointment time) and stayed in Aerocity (lot of hotels are there). If you reach Delhi before 10:30 use Delhi Metro train from Airport to Aerocity, else go with UBER. It charges around 250 in UBER.
  9. Morning i started from hotel at 9:30.
  10. From my hotel, it’s just 5 mins walk to Aerocity metro station
  11. From Aerocity metro station to Shivaji metro station it charges 30 rupees and 15 mins of train travel
  12. Reached around 10 am, VAC is inside Shivaji metro station one floor above train platform.
  13. Just went up and asked the visa service booth to take photo (my bad luck, photographer didn’t come that day and they ask me to go out for photo. There is one photo shops backside of petrol bunk. ( They charge 300 rupees for 4 photos – one good thing is those photos won’t be rejected by counter people)
  14. Those who come directly go to Dropbox or biometrics from home town on same day, can refresh in washroom in same floor before exiting from platform.
  15. For 12 pm slot, they allowed me at 11:30 itself.
  16. If you don’t have any electronic items in shoulder bag, you don’t need to pay for locker in Visa service booth, else they charge 500 rupees for holding. Mobile phone is allowed after shutdown.
  17. It just took 10 mins to come out if all your documents are in place as per checklist (Including NIE documents either self written or employer provided)
  18. I came out even before my appointment time.
  19. I catch again metro train from same Shivaji metro station to Airport terminal, it charges 50 rupees and took 20 mins.
  20. Catch my flight at 3 pm to travel back home.
  21. Now waiting to check for status tomorrow.

Experience 7: H1B at Mumbai

My visa experience in Mumbai consulate :-

Travelled to Mumbai and stayed in Trident , BKC. I would highly recommend if anyone traveling to Mumbai as the consulate is adjust to hotel and it was a good hotel to stay and work.

Biometric on August 4th at 12:00PM
Reached around 11:30 and I was allowed to go inside. Completed the formalities of giving my fingerprints and they checked the Ds 160 and asked relevant appointment details. Completed all that in 10mins and came out around 11:40.

Interview on August 5th at 9:20 AM

Reached consulate around 8:30AM. Hoping if I will be allowed early. But made them to stand in queue and only allowed when it was the time.

Entered inside the area where interviews are taking place. Most of them were all F1 students and there were around 10 people consisting of H1B and H4 candidates.

There were couple of people in front of me who were applying for H4 and H1. The girl with H4 got rejected and the girl with H1 got approved as ai heard she is related to some dental industry.

I was called next and the visa interviewer was in early 30s and looks serious and wants me to give only short and straight answers.

VO: Hello! Good morning
Me : Hello ( was nervous and couldn’t replied back saying Good morning )
VO: pass me your passport and I797
Me : passed
VO : who is your petitioner
Me : answered
VO : when did you joined ?
Me : answered
VO: which sector your work falls in?
Me: answered the critical infrastructure which it falls in.
VO: Did you worked on OPT earlier with this company?
Me: Answered saying my H1 got picked with other company and then transferred to this.
VO: What is your current Salary?
Me : answered
VO: what is the position?
Me: Answered ( You need to elaborate the role in your company without any shortcuts )
VO: tell me your responsibilities in a short 2 lines
Me: Answered ( As they are not technical people , try to add words which can be easily correlated by them. )
VO: so you manage software related to the words I said ?
Me: Yes sir
VO: Yup. Thats good. Your visa is approved and here is the form to know your rights and carry i797 with you when you travel to USA.
Me: Sure. Thank you Sir.

Overall, it was short interview for me. But I also saw multiple people having questioned for long time. Hope this information helps someone.

The thing I missed asking was about the NIE. Does anyone know if there was any scenario where they are giving Visa’s without NIE? In my case , as he asked about the sector I work in, hoping to see it but wanted to hear some thoughts.

Thanks!

Experience 19: H1B + H4 with Dropbox at Chennai (USC Kid)

10’o clock appointment, reached center at 9:30.
Was enquired to where to stand(ppl standing across all areas).
The guy on entrance told me to stand right side, with in 5 mins he asked me to go 1st floor.
There are ppl waiting in the line but they asked me to go counter directly.
On counter, he asked appointment confirmation letter, DS 160 primary and all H4’s, current and one previous approvals, employment letter and NIE letter.
I have US kid, so submitted the cover letter, birth certificate and passport copy.
He started scanning the documents for verification .
At the end he asked 1 photo for all applicants.
Submitted and I opted premium delivery at my home and he said your documents are accepted and will receive your passport in 8-10 days.
If it received before 16 th I have to pay 650 else no charge
Thanks all

Experience 20: H1B with Dropbox at New Delhi

  22. On 5th Aug it shown “No status” if I select Chennai in drop down. As my ds160 belongs to Chennai
  23. On 6th Aug it got updated to “Application Received”, but now my drop down moved to New Delhi
  24. 7th and 8th Aug are weekend
  25. 9th it got updated to “Administrative Processing”
  26. 10th morning got “NIE Approved” email and afternoon status got updated to “Issued”.

Experience 21: H4 with USC Kid at New Delhi

Sharing my first-time H4 stamping experience I have a USC kid. Before I was on H1B now moving on to H4.

June 30th – Booked H4 regular appointment for Jan 2022 at Delhi consulate. It took almost a month to get a regular appointment slot.

July 5th – Applied for EA with USC kid passport, doctor letter, spouse I 797.

July 25th – EA was approved (unexpectedly on weekend- Sunday night). The email says that I need to book the slot by July 28th otherwise it will be canceled. Immediately rescheduled appointment for July 27th(OFC) and July 28th(consular). It was in a rush but I managed to book a flight to Delhi.

July 27th – My OFC appointment was at 9 am. it was quickly done in 30 min. Though my DS 160 had a location as Hyderabad consulate location they did not question it as visa appointment had Delhi only.

July 28th – Consular appointment – My appointment was at 8 40 am so this was quick too.
VO: Are you exempted from the travel ban.
Me: Yes (Since I am a parent of a USC kid). I thought he would ask USC passport but he did not. I gave him the i797 of my spouse.
VO: How long have you been married?
Me: Answered < He did not ask for a marriage certificate but it is mandatory to carry>
VO: What is your husband role in current company
Me: Answered
VO: In which location he works?
Me: Answered
VO: When did you travel to India?
Me: Answered
VO // He was searching for something on his system.
Me: do you need USC kid passport.
VO: No but I would like to check the USC kid birth certificate.
Me: Gave him my kid’s birth certificate and he just verified names and gave them back.
VO: Your visa is approved. Any questions?
Me: is the birth certificate of a USC kid is sufficient to travel?
VO: yes a copy of it will be sufficient. But take your kid with you that would make it easier.
Me: yes definitely, I cannot leave her here 🙂 Thank you.

July 29th: The status was Administrative processing and changed to Issued by evening.
August 2nd: Passport is ready for pick up. My pick-up location was Hyderabad.
August 3rd: Picked up the passport. Stamping was the same as a normal one.

Experience 22: H1B with Dropbox, 221g at New Delhi

End to a stressful journey, Dropbox visa approved by Delhi after 221g from Mumbai,
June 29th – Booked a Feb 2022 regular appt at Delhi & raised EA
July 25th – Canceled my regular appt & booked a dropbox appt for Aug 6th at Delhi
July 26th – EA got approved, but this has gone waste as I have switched to dropbox by then
Aug 6th – Submitted docs(with Employer NIE), no usc kid
Aug 7th & 8th – weekend
Aug 9th – Application received
Agu 10th, around 2pm – Admin processing
Aug 11th, around 11am – Got the NIE approval email
Aug 11th, around 2pm, status changed to issued

Advise to others who have PP 221g’s, if you don’t have a usc kid, don’t waste time and effort following up with consulate (specifically Mumbai), just pay the fees again and go to Delhi for regular(with EA) or dropbox, it isn’t worth even a bit to follow up with Mumbai and questioning them. Don’t lose hope, Delhi is our savior!

Experience 23: H1B at New Delhi

My personal experience at Delhi

1) Biometrics collection is so smooth at Shivaji Chowk Metro stadium on 09 Aug

2) 11 Aug : Consulate appointment at 8:20 AM

Reached the location by 7:30 AM but they will allow you only by 8:10 Am inside and by 8:30 you will be infront of your consular

Questions asked :

VO will ask your fingerprints in the first instance.

1) Who is your employer

2) any end client

3) designation that you hold

4) expected date of travel

5) have a set of all your employer documents

And thennn heard the goldeen words “your visa is approved with NIE” and you will get your passport within 5-7 days and VO handed over me the “know your rights in USA” pamphlet, I belong to Pharma sector.

Experience 24: H1B with EA at Hyderabad

Sharing my interview experience. Hope this will be helpful.

Consulate – Hyderabad
Type- H-1B Regular. This is NOT my 1st stamping.
Appointment category: EA
Date – Biometric – 04 Aug, Interview – 05 Aug.

Biometric:
I took DS-160, passport and appointment letter. Nothing else is needed.
Also phones (even if switched off) and smart watches are not allowed. Plan accordingly.

Interview:
My appointment was at 9:15 am. They allowed me at 9:00 am. It was crowded and took me an hour for my interview turn. Folks inside the consulate are nice and helpful.

Questions:
Q: Show the back of your passport. VO scanned some code from there.
Q: Took my fingerprints again.
Q: How long I have worked for my employer?
Q: What is my base salary?
Q: My highest degree of education?
Q: Do you have USC Kid? Show the birth certificate.
Q: Is kid in India or US?
A: My son is in US. Not sure if it matters anyway.
Q: Is the kid with his dad.
A: Yes.
VO: Your visa is approved.

While I was putting my son’s birth certificate he said keep it handy when you are flying back. Folks at airport will check it.

Current Status:
Portal is showing my case as “Application Received”. I heard Hyd consulate is dead slow.

Note:

I provided my latest I-797, copy of passport, EVL, kid BC and passport.

I applied EA under urgent business. In the brief section I mentioned that my company needs me back because of my work. I got this from my manager and immigration folks.
Lastly I added that my son and spouse are in US from 4 months and they are missing me.

Hyderabad approved my EA in 2-3 business days.

Experience 25: H1B + H4 (Spouse+Daughter) with NIE at New Delhi (USC Kid)

NIE application : US born kid.. added extra line in self declare application as wife and me both are fully vaccinated in USA with Pfizer vaccine.

5th August : 2.00 PM submitted passport at delhi
6th August:- received
9th August: – issued
10th August : Dispatched
11th August: passport received with stamping and NIE.
