Experience 14: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | KOLKATA Consulate

Sharing entire experience. Please skip to the relevant parts as required.

Slot Booking:
Started looking for slots from May 2022. Was monitoring all telegram groups regularly.
On 23rd July 2022, morning time around 7 am slots for Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai released for few dates of September 2022,October 2022, November 2022. Missed it. At 9:30 am somebody posted about slots releasing for Kolkata consulate, checked and luckily was able to book a CA slot for 28th September 2022. Biometrics booked for 25th September 2022 at Mumbai.

Biometrics:
25th September 2022 (Mumbai)
Not allowed to carry any gadget inside the VAC centre. Please check if DS160 is all correct. If any changes they charge you for that at the centre. Lockers available in a nearby space for a charge of Rs.500.
If you’ve made any mistakes on the DS160 form, fill and submit a new one. Carry confirmation page for both. VAC guys will help you update the DS160 number.

Documents carried:

  1. Appointment Confirmation
  2. DS160 Confirmation
  3. Passport

Consular Appointment (Interview):
28th September 2022 (Kolkata)
Same like VAC centre no gadgets allowed. My slot timing was 8:15 am. Reached consulate around 7:30. Was allowed to go inside by 7:45.
Process inside is systematic. Your passport number would be verified. After security check, asked to wait in a room. A Lady checked passport and DS160 confirmation page. She asked everybody to keep the Invitation Letter ready.
Was then sent to Interview room in batches.

The VO greeted us with a very warm Namaskar. He seemed to be really friendly and polite.

Questions asked:

  1. Why are you going?
  2. On what visa is your relative on?
  3. Where does your relative live?
  4. What do all of you do?
  5. Dad said he is a retired government officer. The VO then asked if he receives pension?
  6. Asked to me ( what is your annual salary?)
  7. What is the duration of your visit?
  8. Do you have any other children?
  9. Have you travelled to any other countries before?

Then he said your visa is approved. Would be ready in a week’s time.
Not a single document asked.

Was asked to carry the Invitation letter on top by all consulate employees but the VO didn’t ask for it. Please make sure you have one to avoid unnecessary stress.

Tips:

  1. REMEMBER EACH AND EVERY DETAIL mentioned in DS160. Your each and very answer should match with what you have filled in the DS160.
  2. Try to book an early morning slot if you have a choice. Visa officers are fresh and very friendly. Might not be the case later in the day.

Much thanks to the people in this group for their help in booking of slots and other people who shared their experiences.

What do you do? Said Retired

Do you have any savings? Said have 4Lakhs in account

Who is sponsoring you? Said Daughter

Will you come back? Said yes definitely we have all relatives and mom-in-law to take care here

Who will take care of her while you are gone? Said same that made arrangements with close relatives..

Any other kid? Said elder daughter also lives in US, an hour of travel between both daughters, we want to go visit both of them and come back in 3months..

Though my father is comfortable talking in Hindi, I was pleasantly surprised that Mumbai has Telugu translators and it made it much more easier for them..

Experience 16: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | KOLKATA Consulate

My fresh visa just got approved. Here’s my experience for other first-timers.

VAC- Kolkata (22 Sep ’22)
Appointment at 9. Was allowed in at 8.45.
Allowed to carry mobile phone in switch off mode. You need to show 1) Appointment Confirmation 2) DS-160 confirmation page 3) Passport.

The biometrics will be your photograph and fingerprints. When you receive your passport back, there will be a sticker on its back with your name, visa class, passport number language and consular appointment date along with the ds160 confirmation code.

Consular Appointment – Kolkata (29 Sep ’22)

Appointment at 9.15. I was allowed in at 8.45. The security guard outside checks your appointment confirmation and passport and ticks the list. You’ll not be allowed any electronic devices (phone, smartwatch, pendrive, cd etc) and you can keep them at a store nearby for a charge of Rs.100.

Only wallets, documents folder and handbag(for ladies) are allowed inside the consulate.

Once you walk in, you’ll have a security check where you keep your documents in a tray that goes through a baggage scanner.

Following this, you’ll meet an embassy staff member at the waiting area who will check your passport and DS-160 confirmation page. The staff member will ask if you have an invitation letter and ask you to keep it ready.

You’ll have to wait in line to be called to the interview room. I waited for about 15 minutes before I was allowed into the interview room. In the waiting room, there are a lot of US govt videos playing that talk about the visa process, immigration process, security etc. Further, some interesting pictures and presentations on US- India relations will be played. You’ll barely realise you’re waiting thanks to all these things.

In the interview room, there’s another small queue but you can watch the other applicants attending their interviews. The Consulate of Kolkata currently has only 3 windows operating out of the 7 windows it has.

The interview:
VO- Good morning! Can I see your passport please? hands over passport*
Questions-
Why are you travelling to the US?

What is the conference on?

Tell me more about the ideas that will be discussed in the conference?

Who will pay for your travel?

That’s it, your visa is approved! Enjoy your conference!

Hope this helps!

Experience 17: Regular Slot | B1 | NEW DELHI Consulate

Biometrics on 25th Sep in New Delhi. My time was 12:30 but had got over by 12:10.

CA: New Delhi. 28th Sep 2022

Time of interview: 9:30 and I reached 8:20ish. Was a big line and finally the interview happened around 9:40. I stayed in line for over 40 mins within the interview hall where everyone was being interviewed. There were 4 counters open with 3 gals and a guy. I was sent to counter 20, which had an American dude.

My one was tricky as I had applied for B1 where myself and wife were invited by same company.

My questions:

  • Why do you want to travel to the US?
Ans: We have been invited for business meetings and training by [US Company]
  • Whats the relationship between Indian company and the US Inviting company
Ans: The US company is a client of the Indian company which is owned by me
  • For how many days
    Ans: [days]
  • Where? which city?
    Ans: [Location – city]
  • Travel history? [As I had a brand new passport which I gave. I had all my so far stamps in old passport]
    Ans: Mentioned
  • Where will the kids stay? [This was perplexing as he did not ask if we had kids and it was not mentioned on DS-160 too]
    Ans: Grandparents

Finally golden words “Your visa is approved” and have a safe trip.

Documents: None asked and I had not taken much also, as I know no documents are needed apart from confidence and truth. Along with these, I just took just Passports [all old ones too], invite letters and the consulting contract between my company and the US company. Even they were not needed.

Experience 18: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | KOLKATA Consulate

Visa experience for mother, brother and mother in law (3 people )
Slot booked on : July 23, 2022, 9.15 am IST.

Biometric: Delhi Sept 25., 1 pm.
Reached there at 12:45 and entered in. They checked appointment confirmation , DS-160 and passport.
My brother had bag, therefore he waited outside until my mom and mom in law finished their Biometric to hand over the bag ( He was told locker was available, but he did not want to search for it as VAC is located inside the metro)
They were asked to say Name and DOB.

Interview: KolKata: Sept 28, 8:45 am
They reached around 8 and were sent inside (Did not carry bag this time).
The security checked appointment confirmation and DS-160 confirmation. Then they went inside. The queue was not long. Only one consular officer (Chinese) was working. He was very friendly.
All the three passports handed over together to the officer. (I sent consulate office a request 5 days before interview date to get permission for my brother to act as translator in case it is needed for my parents . It was approved on the same day and received an email back).
I prepped my family with individualized answers to all the potential questions-around 35. They were super confident to appear for the interview. I took three mock interviews as well.

I expected most questions will be asking to my mom ( retired teacher) and my brother (business). But unfortunately all the questions were asked to my mom in law (House wife, who is not good at English😂). But my family took all questions as a group viva and answered whoever knew the answer (as if class topper responds to all the questions immediately 😜)

Questions:

  1. Why you want to go to USA?
  2. Who is there in the USA?
  3. What is her visa?
  4. What is son in law’s visa?
  5. What is your source of income ( to mom in law, housewife): Said House wife and no income
  6. Then how do you live? Said Kids are taking care of me
  7. How many kids you have( to both moms)
    8 . Where are they?
  8. Are you all three going together?

To brother

  1. What are you doing
  2. What is the size of the business ( He has two institutes)
  3. How many students are attending lessons?
  4. How many months you are staying in the USA?

Golden words: Your Visa approved! You will receive your passport in one week!
