Experience 1: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | NEW DELHI Consulate

My parents & brother had their Interview Appt at consulate yesterday. Here’s the experience:

There was NO Hindi translator available in Delhi. This was a surprise! Those who requested a Hindi translator were sent to a counter where the VO herself spoke a little bit Hindi.
My family opted for the interview without a translator.

How are 3 of you related?
Who is the person you mentioned in ds-160?
Father: Our Son-in-law
So you’re going to meet your daughter & sil in US? – Yes

What does your daughter do?
Where are you going in the US?
Father: Mentioned state
VO: Where in this state?
Brother: they recently moved to this new city 5 months ago, earlier they were living here (ds-160 had our older address)

What do you do? To all 3 of them

How long are you planning to stay in US?
Will you get leave from your jobs?

Did you apply for visa earlier?
Why was it rejected?

Congratulations! Your visa is approved

No sponsor related or financial questions asked

Experience 7: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | NEW DELHI Consulate

Our family B2 tourist visa of 4 approved yesterday 30 march. Biometrics done on 29 march and it’s done quickly within 10 min. As we were 4, for biometric firstly two of us went ahead and other two were carrying our phones and stuff in this way we need not to opt for any locker facility as biometric is individual process.
30 march interview time was 8.30 , we reached around 8.10 , went inside immediately still there were 500 people present inside already so sooner you reach the faster you can come outside.
Then we kept our phones in open locker system(like shoe rack) which is inside consulate. Charges 50rs per mobile , you can keep small items also there but for each item you have to pay 50 rs( we kept headphone also for that they charged 50 rs)
Then we proceed inside done security check, after that we went to the passport check counter. We have done a small mistake regarding income. We put less income by mistake and realised it after the ofc(biometrics) done on 29 march so we enquired in one of the group and someone told that we can request them to update ds160 there. So i filled new ds160 and just took the new confirmation page with me but didn’t updated it in the portal.
The passport counter lady was Indian so talked to her in Hindi, she said she will see if she can update. Then she told no need to update new ds 160 as she can update the new income in the same ds160 and dont show new confirmation page to anyone. If officer asks then tell the correct income.( We were half relieved there, as we were so tensed that our visa should not be rejected due to our mistake and low income)
Then done with biometric , for that US lady was there pretty good( however in next counter saw a US man for biometric very angry dealing with biometric like giving back passport back harshlessly may be it was his way of doing things, but many people were tense there only) then moved to the interview line. ( All passport checking counter, biometric and interview are in the same line just diff counter beside each other, we thought biometric will be in one place and interview will be in other hall or room but all the things were in the same place)
Then comes the interview part-
As we were 4 staff arranged us in two line two in each. Me and my mother was in front as I would be giving most answers and behind us my father and brother.
Officer was in hurry before person before us was about to leave he called us immediately and asked for passport.
There were no expressions on his face so we thought might be grumpy and we should not get him but we got him only( here I told myself not to judge them and he might be supportive no more prejudices)

Interview-
VO-(he was a white man)good morning
We- good morning officer
Vo-who are you to everyone?
Me- introduced my family
Vo-what purpose?
Me- travelling, tourism
Vo- how many days?
Me-10 days
Vo-what age me and my brother?
Me- i am 30 and brother answered 26
Vo-Both married?
We- said no(with smile)
Vo-what do you do to one by one to all?
Me-Ph.D student
Brother- veterinary doctor
Mother- gynecologist, practising from last 30 years (doctor)
Father- general practitioners(doctor),practising from last 30 years and me and my wife have
Own hospital
Vo-again what purpose business, work or pleasure?
Me- told again for tourism
Vo-what countries visited before?
Me-singapore, Malaysia, srilanka and next month my parents are going for uk and Europe trip( folded uk visa page on passport, so that as soon as vo open mother’s passport he sees uk visa and he checked in the first and saw uk visa , i think that might have helped us a lot for approval)
Vo- all 4 to all these?
Me- we 4 went to Singapore and Malaysia together

Then vo was typing something, could feel my heartbeats fastening but still maintain calm and confidence and smile on face and then he said ‘ YOUR VISA HAS BEEN APPROVED’.

we all thanked him took the white slip which they give and greeted him have a great day sir and left from there as soon as can( didn’t want him to change his mind😄)

Interview was over within 2 mins. Ours was purely tourist visa. Have cousin in usa but showed tourism purpose only and in other relative section gave cousin details but nothing about cousin asked. For B2 visa we have to just give passport to the officer. Saw 4-5 people rejected but mostly approved, also saw 2 family’s grilled for long time but couldn’t hear them. Our officer was speaking with a very low voice so we have to be very attentive. My parents couldn’t hear half of the questions. Me and my brother paid the utmost attention as don’t want him to repeat his questions and increase his time. Officer has a Mike and outside window i think above us there was something round shaped and i think that was the Mike for us.
Came out by 9.45 am. Saw online status it shows approved. Gave Authorization letter to brother signed and he will be collecting passport on our behalf. Passport collection is closed on Saturday and on Sunday ofc staff told that you can collect between 1pm to 5 pm.

Note- there are washrooms inside just beside the interview counters. Also coffee, tea and small snack biscuit like counter is there inside incase anyone wants to have something. We took coffee after interview, price 100 rs not good but needed one. At security check you have to keep everything in trey but ornaments you can keep . You can also carry small purse inside but no electronic or sharp item in it. We carried biscuit and transperant water bottle with us as father was diabetic. We were formals father- white shirt black pant, brother- light pink pant, mother- light color Punjabi dress, me- off white color kurta, but saw many of people with casual cool clothes, officers themselves were in casual clothes.

Thanks to this group for appointment updates. We wanted to visit in 2024 or 2025 also put travel date for 2024 April so thinking whether should we go for interview now or not. But this group got me appointment the same day i filled my ds 160. And we have a visa now.

Experience 11: B1/B2 Stamping Experience at Chennai – English

Date: 10th April, 2023

Language: English

My husband and I had our Consular interview and here’s our experience:

Our interview was at 10 am, we were there by 8.30 am itself, already there was a long line.

But they were letting in people based on their slot, so the 9 am slots and 9.30 am slots went ahead of us, and we (and a few others) stood by the side and waited for our turn.

No phones allowed and masks are compulsory. People who had phones had to go back and keep them away (no “Switch off and keep inside” – we were allowed to switch off and keep inside at the Biometrics center). And for masks people were being directed to an Auto guy who had masks and was selling them.

No water bottles allowed, people were being asked to keep away their bottles by the side of the road. No cosmetics also allowed in your purse/handbag (no lipstick, no lipbalm, no charger, no headphone – I was specifically asked and had to show my purse).

Once inside there were separate lines for English language and other langueges.

We were asked:
Why are you going to the US? (to visit our daughter)
What does your daughter do?
How long are you going for?
Who is paying for your trip?
Why is your passport issued in Tokyo? (to my husband)
What were you doing in Tokyo?
What was your role?
What do you do? (to me)
Where were you working before?

Then, “Your visa is approved, Thank you.”

Wish you all Good Luck !

Experience 12: B1/B2 Stamping Experience at New Delhi – Hindi

Date: 31st March, 2023

Language: Hindi

Case: Dad mom visa interview date on Mar 31. Dad passed away in Jan, 3 months before interview. Dad was primary applicant. Travel Sponsorship was added as Self i.e. Dad sponsored himself for him and mom.

How we handled:
Applied a fresh DS 160 with mom as single applicant. Also changed sponsorship to myself (Daughter on h4 visa). Son in law is h1.

Biometric – 30th Mar 2023:

Documents required: Just Passport, application confirmation where the barcode and how much is paid amount is written and the Confirmation letter for fingerprint. The confirmation letter will have the stamp from VAc.
Biometric problem we faced:
Mom Passport name
Surname: NIL
Given name: XYZ

Doesnot match with DS 160 form name as
Given name was first name, Surname was usual last name.

They said on the spot to correct and come. The USA VAC center at shivaji stadium delhi. Right in front of USA VAC there was a booth doing the updates/edits on DS 160. They corrected as per the VAC staff outside. Took 1000 inr.
Now, it’s completely opposite
Surname: XYZ
Given name: FNU (first name unknown)

IMMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND AND AVOID CONFUSION: this is how they handle such cases.

Interview date 31st Mar 2023:

Documents Required:

We actually have prepared more than necessary but it’s always good.

  1. Mom Passport both new and previous one if applicable
  2. Home property papers and recent property tax if any
  3. Bank statements, fixed deposits, etc. In her name if any. Just to show she’s capable of sponsoring herself. If you are sponsoring then it’s just a choice.
  4. Home address proof. Like recent water bill or recent electricity bill

My documents for h1 or h4:

  1. My passport and recent visa copy, H1 or H4 visa approval letter by US govt.
  2. My marriage certificate with h1
  3. My USA bank statement 3 months
  4. My employment Letter
  5. Salary slips of you are h1

Son in law H1 documents:

  1. His passport and recent visa copy, H1 visa approval letter by US govt.
  2. Any invitation Letter by him to your mom (if he’s the only one holding h1 in your family)
  3. His recent 3 months bank statements
  4. Tax proof
  5. Salary slips recent 3 months
  6. Usa Property tax if any
  7. Recent 3 months bank statements

Very easily done:
Questions asked:
Q.What’s name of your daughter
A. Told
Q.Which location
A. Told
Q. Is she working
A. Yes

The American lady at the Delhi interview counter was very helpful. My mom asked for hindi translated. She said she knows hindi. And herself said Namaste. She herself answered for mom as is ABC your daughter. Does she lives in xyz city in usa.
Then she said ok you’re done. She gave flying kiss and two thumbs up to mom. And said ho gya.

Interview Centre: Chennai
Interview Date: 18th May

Don’t carry any mobile, wallet, luggage, bag, laptop, pendrive or even smartwatch to the centre for hassle free experience. Locker is available at biometric centre. Not sure about interview centre. I stayed in a hotel which was nearby (walking distance) hence did not carry any of the above.

Documents carried:

  1. Passport (both current and old)
  2. DS-160 copy
  3. Appointment confirmation copy
  4. Company sponsor letter
  5. Invitation letter

Documents asked:

  1. Passport (current only)

No other documents asked.

Mine was a company sponsored Visa.

Questions asked:

  1. What is the purpose of travel to the US?
  2. How long have you been working in the current company?
  3. Why the company chose you to go to the US? (This question was in context to what answer I gave of question 1)
  4. Are you married?
  5. Do you have any kids?
  6. Are they travelling with you to the US?

My Visa got approved.

PS: I already have UK visa and had travelled in the past. So the person looked at the passport and saw the stamping and was convinced with my answer about the tenure of my visit and my purpose. UK visa stamping and travel is an added advantage to convince them about your travel purpose.

I have been following this group from 2 months now and it has helped me for my interview. Thank you for all the support.

My mom’s new visa experience, hoping it would help others just like this group was very helpful to us.
Biometrics appointment at Chennai
Appt time 9 am
Stayed at Cute Orange Hotel basically few steps away from VAC, not great hotel but very near is easy for especially parents. Food was also mediocre.
Carried only passport, documents and mask. Went in car so driver held on to all belongings at the hotel itself.
Went in 8.30 am came out 9 am everything went fast as mom didn’t carry phone, all others that came along with her that had phone had to be delayed either to switch off phone or go out and keep the phone or other belongings away.

Visa appt :
Stayed at the Kings Park Grand really good hotel but expensive food and is 5 mins car drive, walking would be easier it seems but would be very hot for elders. Went to the consulate by 10.30 am stood in queue for 20 mins, they let her in. Same as before only documents and mask plus some cash like Rs. 10,20 to call driver in case couldn’t find him later. Inside scanned document, checked passport.
There were many queues each for one language, English and Urdu were long lines. Other regional languages very short queue only 10 members in each. Waited a few mins in Tamil queue, officer himself talked in Tamil. Interview got over in 10 mins asked only for passport.
Questions asked:

  1. Who are you going to stay with
  2. What is sponsor’s occupation
  3. How many kids do you have
  4. Where is the other kid
  5. How many months will you stay

Said visa is approved passport will reach in 4 days and it did reach on 3rd day. Delivery person charged Rs.650.

SSince many of you must have a lot of questions, I will try to compile everything in one go.
I stayed at Ibis hotel which is walking distance from the US Consulate. They provide complementary drops to the Consulate. It is a good hotel at the price that they are giving. Rooms are decent and the service is exceptional. Most of the staff here know Hindi and English. Food is average but the try to customise as per your requirement if they can. The staff is polite and friendly.

  1. Biometric – approx 3 kms from Ibis. You can easily get local auto/Uber. Just be 15 mins before your time. The staff at Biometric are friendly and they will guide you properly. They can speak and understand English. Mobile to be switch off. Just carry both the confirmation forms and passport. A small bag is allowed. The process is seamless and should not take more than 30 minutes once you reach there.
  2. Consulate – Be there 30 mins before your slot. No electronics and bags allowed. Just carry mandatory documents. Mask is compulsory. Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu translators are available. Seamless process and staff are friendly. The whole process was completed in 45 mins since the time I reached there.

Questions asked –

  1. Purpose of visit
  2. Name of the company
  3. What sort of training
  4. Since how long you are working with the company

I was a little nervous as Chennai is a new city for me and knew that language could be a problem here and didn’t know anyone who had given their interview in Chennai, so thought of putting everything together as it might help you. Language is definitely not a problem, most of them can speak English even the auto and cabs owners can. Thanks.
