For my sister in law, brother already has visa.
Visa Appointment time – 0820 AM.
Reached at – 0750 AM.
Was rushed inside immediately.
People who were scheduled on time were taken inside (i.e: the interview room) first. We were made to sit in the porch outside interview room til. 0820 AM.
Had to stand in line for whole duration (i.e: the interview room, once we were inside). B1/B2 visa applicants were called a bit earlier as other categories were taking longer (a guess!). I faced a middle aged interviewer (white, American male in 50’s.). Questions asked were:
Are you a doctor?
Are you married?
You have some relative in America?
Where does he/she work?
Where do you plan to stay?
Why do you want to go?
Have you been to any other country?
In which year you went to that country? – this was specific!
What was the purpose of your visit there?
How long do you plan to visit USA?
Your husband has visa to USA?
How many times has he been to USA?
You have kids?
Have you not applied visa for them? Why?
Where will your kids stay, when you go?
Experience 5: Regular Slot | B2 | MUMBAI Consulate
B2 for my parents
19 biometric
I had made a mistake while filling their DS160. My parents reached the VAC and were immediately sent back coz of name error. The guards there advised to go to a nearby cyber cafe and get the ds160 corrected. We took a shot at it and they were able to fill in a new ds160 for both and the VAC folks updated the new DS160 numbers in the appointment confirmation.

No docs asked and CO officer said visa approved and did Namaste for my parents which is really nice !:)
Wish everyone all the best. Wish all your parents visa get approved and may all your dreams come true !

Please prep and do mock interview for your parents before they take the consulate interview. Confidence and communication seems to be key factors than documents.
Thanks again and all the best everyone !!
Experience 12: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | NEW DELHI Consulate
Me and my family (elder brother, father, mother) appeared for the consular interview yesterday at US embassy.
Our interview experience –
We walked to the window, and the officer greeted us with a smile. We greeted her back.
Since my mother and father are not comfortable conversing in English, we asked for a Hindi Translator to the interviewer, she said “let’s see how far we can go”.
Then she started asking questions, which were mostly answered by me and my brother since we are comfortable with English.
Questions asked were –
- Purpose of our visit
- Who will sponsor our trip
- Asked me specially what do I do.
- Asked about our family business, about what the business is about.
- Do we own a house in India.
- Do we live together in that house.
- Have we been to USA before.
- Where specifically will be going in USA.
- How long are we planning to stay.
- Do we know someone in USA.
After typing something, she said, “Congratulations, your visa has been approved, enjoy your stay in United states”
We thanked her and left.

One advise, consulate offices asking questions to both parents even though one of them answering to all questions/ make sure you prepare both them for interview.
Experience 14: Regular Slot |B2| MUMBAI Consulate
My B2 visa just got approved. The Asian lady who asked me was quite grumpy.
*My advice would be don’t let the interviewer’s behavior or the expression on their face affect you or the way you answer.
We all know how much difficulty and efforts or spending a lot of money we got a slot and how much we spent to come here *
I wished her good morning and asked how’s it going and she is like
” Just give me your passport” ( if I have to make sarkar in North Asian languages. I will cast this woman in Amitabh “s role)
Heads up: my interview went on for almost 5 minutes. So this is a lengthy post.
VO: Why do you wanna visit the US?
Me: My first cousin stays there and to see my ailing paternal aunt. I have the necessary documentation if you want to see it.
She told me to “keep it with you I don’t have much time”.( And she interviewed me for 5 mins lol)
VO: where will you be going?
ME: told the place where I will be going.
VO: Alrighty, where you gonna be there in that place?
Me: At my cousin’s place
VO: How long has it been since you saw your aunt?
Me: 18 years.
VO: Why so long?
Me: She shifted to States a year after my cousin’s marriage
VO: What visa your cousin is on? What does your cousin’s husband do?
Me: mentioned the details
VO: Can you tell me the address of your cousin where your aunt is staying?
Me: Sure it is so and so, Blah Blah.
VO: who will be sponsoring your trip?
Me: Myself. I have ample savings in my account as well.
VO: How much do you earn for a year?
Me: For now am working in our family-run hospital. So I told the same.
VO: Are you the only kid?
Me: Yes
VO: What’s your job role in the hospital?
Me: Mentioned my job role and mentioned it’s a permanent job role.
VO: How big is your hospital? What’s its major specialization of it?
Me: Mentioned it’s a multi-specialty hospital.
VO: Can you tell me more about your hospital?
Me: Sure.Blah blah.
VO: I see in your DS 160 that you did Masters in Film and theatre arts ( M.F.A). So why this sudden change in the line of profession?
Me: I thought of going Film direction and have formal training however lots of liabilities and responsibilities were impended at the same time my dad got a stroke and I am left with no other option except to take logistics and operations into my control.
VO: who are there in your family? Are you travelling with your family?
Me: No. It’s me. Who’s planning to go there. And my family comprises so and so people.
VO: Have you been to any other countries?
Me: Yes I did. And mentioned the names.
VO: I notice you went to Singapore on a work/ business visa. Tell me about it.
Me: I mentioned and explained about it. and why I went there because of my former job. However, she kinda misinterpreted thinking I went to work there. I reiterated saying It in a clear way. She understood now.
Throughout the interview, her face is so serious as if she had a fight at home and she is venting it out here.
She took a couple of seconds. Scrolled up and down in the system and asked
VO: How many months are you planning to stay in the USA?
Me: One month.
VO is like why just a month?
I only want to spend some quality time with my aunt. In this trip, I want to cater my whole time to her. And I have leave approval only for 30 days.
The last one is a tricky one which she asked about.
VO: You are saying it’s your family-run hospital and you are your parent’s only son and your mom is the chief doctor and MD of the Hospital, And you mentioning Leave approval now. It’s confusing?
Me: let me explain mam
Told her as per the rules of NABH,if I am presenting my hospital’s case for accreditation or certain licenses and the Empanelment of govt health schemes, I have to be a salaried employee of the hospital, etc.
VO: Who gonna take care of your job role if you go to the USA?
Me: I have a team who works under me and reports to me. They can take care of it.
She was again scrolling into the system and I am like
“Is this woman searching alliances for me in matrimony or Is she searching for a reason to reject”.
And I made up my mind likewise and her highness the VO mentioned the Golden words.
VO: Your visa has been approved.
I thanked her and she gave an expression like I don’t give a damn and I left that place. There is a lot of crowd today since morning 6:15 am. It took an hour and a half for us for the whole process.
Thank you so much guys for all the suggestions. Input and sharing your knowledge. It’s been super helpful 🙏🏻 Really appreciate all of your efforts.

Got biometry done on 27th jan and interview today. Both went well.
It’s better to take mask at both places.
In biometry, had to get ds 160.changed as there was some correction in name{name not exactly like passport}. This was done in cyber cafe inside the consulate office itself. The documents needed were the appointment confirmation, ds form, mvr rct and recent passport. The secret question & answer were necessary for ds correction.
There is locker inside , charge is rs. 400.
There were two bar code stickers were attached to the back of passport .
For interview, these bar code stickers at back of passport itself, were sufficient enough, no other document was required. So no need of any document or old passport for interview.
There is locker in interview place as well, but we kept mobile in hotel itself as it was not needed. (Unlike biometrics , where you may need it for password or mail, for some correction)
The biometrics takes about 45 min and interview process takes about one hour.
We has dressed formally, keeping in mind the situation and our age.
Interview has one line of passport checking, next of biometrics checking, then final interview.
Interview of me and my wife , we had a lady officer , with Korean like features. She was to the point and fast.(there were about 400 people in various queues, so it must be weighing on their minds)
Questions :
Why do you want to go?
What do you do?
How much do you make per year?
What does your son do?
My wife was asked
Do you speak English?
Do you have another son in india?
How long will you stay there ?
All the time, her attention was in varifying our answers with data on her monitor, and hardly at us.
Lastly, she said visa approved and you will get your passport in few days.
We stayed in hotel.bkc crown nearby, tariff about 3000/-. It’s 10 min walk from visa offices. The hotel building has 4 hotels , bkc grand, bkc inn, bkc pearl, bkc crown. All are similar, tariffs from 3 to 4000/-. Ground floor has restaurant for breakfast and l unch.

My parents’ and sister’s visa got approved from consulate. This group was incredibly helpful for getting tactile up-to-date experiences. Thanks a lot! Sharing my family’s experience below.
Biometric at VAC
Appointment was at 2:30pm, but they were allowed to get inside at 2pm. They have biometric rooms in two different floors and staff will direct which floor to go to. Both stairs and lift are available. After getting inside, each person from the group was sent to a different window (which ever got free). VAC also has translators, but they were not very fluent in native language. My mother only speaks Hindi and she had trouble understanding translator’s Hindi. They also gave my mother 1-2 page of hindi text and asked my mother to read it (it was rules/agreement for visa interview; things like I won’t lie to interviewer and agree to any prosecutions if I lie etc). My father & sister were not asked/given any such thing. They asked my father to carry two US-style passport photos to the interview after taking photos (sister & mother were not asked so). There was a photo studio in the lower-most floor (garage level) and they charged Rs 300 for 6 photos per person. Both my parents and sister carried passport photos to interview, just in case, but it was not asked during the interview.
Interview at Consulate
Appointment was at 3pm, but they were allowed to get inside at 2:30pm. My parents had a water bottle and few homeopathic medicines in small glass bottles – security asked to remove them. There is no locker facility, so they basically dumped it outside. My sister is fluent in English but they requested hindi translator because of parents. Surprisingly there was no queue for Hindi and they were escorted to VO window directly (there was a long queue of >60 people for Tamil translator). After greeting, VO asked my sister if she can translate for my parents as the Hindi translator had gone for a break. My sister agreed and all questions were asked to my sister. The interview lasted about 5-6 mins.
Questions asked to my sister:
- Why are you going to US?
- Where does your brother stay?
- Does he have kids? How old?
- Are you married?
- Whom do you live with?
- Do you have kids?
- Do your parents live by themselves?
- Who will sponsor the visit?
- What do you do?
- How much do you earn?
- Where do you live?
- Do you own the house/place where you live?
- What does your husband do?
- How much does your husband earn?
- What does your father/mother do?
- Do your parents own the house they live in?
- Have you travelled outside India? Where?
- Have your parents travelled outside India?
- Who else is traveling with you? (answered her husband as well)
- How will your husband travel with you? Does he have visa? (Yes)
- (VO silent for 10-20 secs and typing lots of things… )
- You mentioned your husband will accompany you on travel, right? (Repeated answer again)
- (VO typing furiously for next 1 to 1.5 mins… glanced at my sister & parents once or twice for a moment… my sister is scared and crying inside…)
- VO looks up smiling – Your visa is approved! Have a nice trip!! (Handed over a green slip that also mentions visa is approved)
- (Everyone feels relieved!! They thank VO and leave)
No documents asked. They were in & out in about 30 mins.

My husband, his brother, and his parents had their interviews on Feb 3
Background:
My husband has his green-card processing (I’m a permanent resident)
My BIL is unmarried, just finished engg college and joined his first job 5 months ago.
The reason for travel was to attend my sister’s graduation in June. All 4 of them got their visa approved.
Questions asked:
Reason for travel
Everyone’s occupation
Travel history outside of India
Who will be paying for the travel
My husband was asked questions about what I do, where I live, where my parents live, etc.
No documents asked
The odds of my husband and my BIL getting the visa were slim, but they have travelled outside of india many times (and to many developed countries like Schengen) so we believe that is the reason for their visa approval.
