Experience 3: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | NEW DELHI Consulate

OFC: 9th Feb

Language Translator availability: It will be purely based on the availability at the time of your interview. Outside translators are not allowed at New Delhi. Counselor will try to get a translator but if there is no availability then he will continue in English (that’s what happened for my parents).

I did multiple rounds of mock interviews for my parents. That helped a lot in result!

Experience 6: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | MUMBAI Consulate

I had a successful visa application experience at consulate (10 FEB OFC & 13 FEB CA)..

Mumbai OFC has a locker for mobile phones and bags … for mobile they charged a whopping Rs. 400 for safe keeping… otherwise its a seamless experience..

At the consulate they have a mobile locker and mobile/headset/smart watch etc were charged Rs.50 a piece each for safe keeping… allowed bags and waterbottles after xray scanning..

I had seen they had marathi, tamil, telugu, malayalam lines apart from hindi and english … hindi and english had large queues while southern regional languages had only fewer takers… in all it took about 2.5 hrs for the whole process to complete for english language interviews.

Questions were,

  1. Who is in US ? Whats the purpose of visit
  2. How long is the trip planned
  3. Who is paying for the trip
  4. How many children you have
  5. Where are you working and whats your annual income
  6. To my spouse, what is she doing. ..

Thank you all…

Experience 7: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | MUMBAI Consulate

Status – Approved
Questions asked to my fiancée:
Why do you want to go USA? (Answered in short brief)
When do you want to go USA? (Short answer)
For how many days you are going to stay there? (Short answer)
What do you do? (Answered in brief)
Your annual income? (Short answer but specific)
What are you going to do in USA? Tour plan? (Answered in brief)
Is your tour package tour? (Short answer)
Properties you have in India? (Short answer but specific)
Do you have anyone in USA? (Short answer)
Have you visited any other county before? (Short answer)

Questions they asked me
When are you getting married? (Short answer)
What do you do? (Answered in brief)

Total interview time was 2 – 3 minutes.

Things to keep in mind:
Firstly take a deep breath.
Remove from your mind that “He is a counselor, talk to him the way you talk to your friend”
Don’t get panic, be confident with what you say.
DON’T FOCUS ON OTHERS INTERVIEW.
IF YOU SEE ANYBODY GETS REJECTED DON’T GET DEMOTIVATED.
Focus on your Goals.

Hope this will help you.

Experience 8: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | CHENNAI Consulate

Interview experience on 14th Feb at 10:30 AM.

Questions asked:
Purpose of visit
For How many days
VO Mentioned about my previous B1/B2 rejection which happened in 2011 but she answered it herself saying I was a kid/student then.
But had a J1 approved few months after that. Asked about my previous J1 visa when I had travelled as a student in 2012 and asked to share about my experience then.
Asked about my business and annual income
Asked about my travel history

To my wife:
What do you do for a living

Visa approved. No documents were asked.

I read a few posts on this group saying they were let in early but I would suggest try to reach just 45 mins before your interview slot time as they will not allow you early regardless of the crowd in chennai.

There were a few people with interview time at 12 noon who were standing outside in the heat from 9 am. They were all asked to wait till their slot time, so no point going early.

Experience 12: Regular Slot | B1 | MUMBAI Consulate

Got my B1 visa approved today.

Biometric: February-05
Had biometric appointment scheduled for 4.30. They let us in around 3.50 at Main gate. In the first floor we were told not to carry the Mobil phones. There is a locker facility available in 1st floor where you can keep it. The charge for the same was ₹400. Only Passport, DS160 and appointment confirmation was required. Was out around 4.40.
Note:

  1. There is no waiting area outside. So be there just before 30 Min.
  2. I had my passport renewed after application payment was done. Had to create a new ds-160 and update the cgi portal with new DS160 and passport dates of the new passport.(passport number wasn’t changed that was not a problem at all)

VAC: February-17, 9.40 AM

Reached by 9.15 and was let in. There was a locker facility after the first entry point. After security Check was allowed inside where we had to wait for sometime. At the counsellor appointment room first would be to undergo appointment verification then fingerprint verification. No need to bother just follow the line. There are many people inside to guide you through. In the appointment confirmation window is where they ask the preference of translators.
At the interview following questions were asked:

  1. Reason for the visit
  2. Monthly salary
  3. My designation
  4. Are you travelling alone
  5. How long will I be staying
    Visa approved.

No documents were asked. Only the new passport were the sticker was provided during Biometric. Was out around 10.45

Experience 13: Regular Slot | B1/B2 | MUMBAI Consulate

Biometric interview – 13th Feb, 12 pm
So there are two different companies managing stuff at the centre. VFS manages the biometrics inside, but some private company named “Next Destination” manages everything outside like lockers for keeping cellphone or smartphone, or taking printouts etc of any of the forms.

Everything was chaotic outside the biometric hall, as the staff didn’t have clear instructions. Guards outside keep asking people to fall in line. That’s about it!! If you ask them why isn’t the line moving, they would say- we don’t know. If you tell them, I am coming back after some correction in form, they would say, you can’t go inside directly, even when the VFS staff inside might have asked to come inside directly. Nobody wears id cards, so you can’t tell the guards outside that so and so person had asked to come inside directly. VFS staff won’t tell you clearly what all shortcomings are there and everytime you have to follow the line of 20-30 people

“Next destination” charges Rs 400 for keeping mobile phone/smartwatch for 1-2 hours. I found it quite abhorrent, provided that the place where they keep the phones/smartwatch is just like shoe racks we find outside temples.

My DS160 had expired as it had a validity of 1 year. Ideally it was the responsibility of VFS to inform, but I didn’t get any intimation. On 13th Feb 2023, my DS160 application had crossed 1 year by 3 days. So, I had to fill it up again. The same private company Next destination, has a provision of editing and creating a new DS160. But the catch here is that they would ask Rs 3000 for creating this new application. The amount is just insane and is nothing short of loot! I asked them if they can give a printout, that is, if I fill up the DS160 application again myself on my phone They said they can give a printout, but at Rs 400 per page. World’s costliest printout!!

Plus the staff from VFS inside was highly unprofessional, worse than SBI. They randomly left the counter for “lunch”. This lunch spanned for anything from 1-2 hours, due to which the lines didn’t move much from 12.30 to 1.45. Though if you ask them, they would say that lunch is for 30 mins, but the staff would just hide somewhere inside and chit chat. By the time I had reached the counter for fingerprint at 2 pm, I was totally exhausted!! If somebody would ask them why there was no one at the counter for more than an hour or why just 1 counter was functional for the last 1 hour when hundreds are waiting in queue outside, they would talk rudely and say “jo karna hain kar lo”. Clearly, goons/ mafia from VFS are managing this and it looks like US embassy/consulate is unaware of this whole fiasco.

Consulate interview: 15th Feb, 1 pm

At the consulate, things were highly organised and crowd management was really good. At a time they were managing crowds upto 5000 people but it was being very nicely done. I didn’t carry the phone this time, so didn’t have to submit it at the locker, but they were charging Rs 50 only, which is very genuine I feel.
Once you enter the hall, they cross check your fingerprints once again to ensure you are the same person who went for the biometric.
They will next ask you about the language of interview and assign you to a line. Mine was English so there were more counters to serve it. In the interview, the following questions were asked –

  1. Why do you want to go to the US?
  2. How many family members of yours are currently in the US?
  3. For how long do you plan to visit the US?
  4. Have you travelled to any other country before?
  5. What do you do in India ? Your designation?
  6. What’s your monthly income?
  7. Do you plan to settle down in the US in future?

Visa approved

• Translators are nice and know multiple languages.
• Prepare your parents with questions, info in DS160 should match. I took some common questions and answers from online and translated in hindi so that mom can scan through it. It helps.
• remember the location where you are visiting in US. Some city and state name are complex. It can get hot during day and wait time increases , be hydrated so that you are feeling well during the process.

Biometrics was very quick, very few people.
Interview: Done in an hour, 2 visa counters, however the line was not that big in the morning appointment.
Hotel was close for my family to the location, so they only carried documents to both the appointments and left phones and bags in the hotel.
Few points which I think helped in this visa interview for my parents and brother:
I made sure DS 160 was reviewed properly multiple times to avoid any issues. Also my dad has a business, so I added detailed job decription in DS 160 itself to show that it is a well established business.
Before the interview, I had heard that single unmarried siblings it is hard to get, my brother has a decent monthly salary and is at a good position so it worked out well for this time.
I also prepared a question answer sheet for my parents and brother to practice the questions so that they feel more confident during the interview giving answers. Being confident helps.

Thanks all and best of luck.
