This is the second article on MS vs MBA in the USA. If you have not read it, please read the first article: Should I apply for MS or MBA in the US ? difference ? It talks about the differences between MS vs MBA and what each of the degrees focuses on. In this article, we will look at aspects of funding, fee and other aspects.
Fees MBA vs MS? Which is cheap? State University Vs Private Schools
MS tuition fee is typically much cheaper than MBA. Business schools have their own course fee structure. Also, in terms of fees, US State schools fee is always cheaper than Private Schools. For instance, MBA at private school like University of Chicago will cost you ONLY the tuition for NINE MONTHS is $74,919 as of year 2022.
As a non-resident, MBA at a state school like University of Wisconsin will cost you $47,013 for a 9 months for the year 2022. Also, fees at University of Houston Masters program for MBA is around $1397 per credit in 2022, which comes to $12,573 per semester if you take 9 credits. Not going into specifics, but if you look at MS fees as well, it is cheaper to study in state schools.
The summary is that state schools always have a lesser fee as they are state-funded. For more details, read Cost of MS / MBA in US – Apply for Cheaper Schools
Funding – TA, RA, GA for MBA and MS ?
Funding is a big thing for students and most common types of funding as we have explained are in the form of Teaching Assistantships(TA), Research Assistantship(RA) and Graduate Assistantship(GA). Check the post about what are TA, GA and RA for more info if you do not know with funding info.
Let’s think logically first, MS is more technical and research oriented, logically speaking if the University has more research funding then, there is more funding for MS. On the other hand, MBA, it is not tied very much to research, where do funds come from? The only source for MBA funding is Fellowships, scholarships, or TAs for Undergrad Business students.
If you notice, for MBA, the research part is almost not there unless you are in Ph.D. Guess what, if you are MBA and applying for funding in Business school, MS people of Marketing or Finance are competition to you for that too. So, your option is to work in other departments or have no funding at all.
But for MS, you have many options like working as RA, TA or GA in your department or other department based on your background. Not only logically, but in reality too, there is less funding for MBA than for MS due to the research focus and other related aspects. You may get in-state tuition in state universities if you stay long enough like year or so and pay taxes in that states by working on a work visa, but in private schools forget about funding…
Should you study MS or MBA? How to decide ?
I know most of you want to be managers and entrepreneurs in future by jumping into MBA right after B.Tech, B.A or B.Com… Let me tell you the truth folks, You will learn very little if you go to MBA without two to three years of work experience. You have to work in an organization setting to fully comprehend and appreciate the full potential of MBA. For this reason, most of the business schools have a requirement of 3 to 5 years of work experience as a major factor.
Think about this, “if you were never a team member, how will you understand the team member’s problems and their perspective if you were never a team member and directly have become a manager”. So, start at the base and then climb up ! My recommendation is if you are starting your career, then do not go for MBA, work and then go. Read MBA after B.tech or With Work Experience ?. As of MS is concerned, as I said in previous posts there are many types of students who would like to come to the US for education and some for jobs only. Depending on your situation, you may pick one of the below.
- Typically, MS is done for anyone with career path of PhD or research.
- If you want to do Ph.D. someday and be professor, then MS and PhD integrated program.
- If you worked for two years, and have money to support your MBA financially, then MBA
- If you are not sure what you want to do, then take time to think about what you really like and where you see yourself in next 10 years and take a decision on what makes sense for your career path.
Overall, it is up to your passion on where you want to be in the next 10 years, try to do something that will help you get there…it is your decision, plan well and go for your passion… I am not trying to discourage anyone to do MBA right after B.Tech, but just telling you the facts I have learnt. Good Luck ! Make an informed decision….It is your future !
What are your thoughts ? Anything to add that I have missed ?
Hi,
I have 3 years of IT exp and I have been working in Supply chain management domain. Now I don’t want to do coding any more but love the domain SCM and want to become functional. Is doing MS/ MBA in SCM in US will help me achieving my goal. I did B-TECH in ET &T from NIT Raipur.
Also If I go for any one year program in SCM from university of Texas Dallas or any other university fair.

or else you can apply after completion of bond period.
Hi Kumar,
Your posts are very usefully informative..:)
I am a B.tech graduate with 3 years of work exp. Currently, I am in US on H-4 visa and I am planning to do MBA in state university.
But I am afraid of getting a job in US (for an Indian) in the MBA field here..
Should It be better if I go to India after my MBA here, Or to stay and hunt for a job here? Looking forward for your kind advice. Thanks in advance.
Once you complete your studies, you can file for OPT that gives you up to 90 days to search for a job. You can use this period to see if there are any suitable jobs available to you for your profession. If that doesn’t work out, you can move back to India or move to another suitable visa status (like H-4).

i am an Indian, i want to to my masters form USA and i want to earn money to with that. and after i read our message i am thinking to do MS… so can u please help me for that???
Hey Kumar, I’m into a pretty weird situation at the moment. I’m doing my 4th year Civil Engineering from M.S. University of Baroda and have a good academic as well as co-curricular record. As soon as the semester started, Larsen & Toubro came and recruited me giving starting salary 3.75 lakh per annum.
I’d always wanted to do masters in the US but now am confused whether I should go with the job or MS in US. The application processes cost quite some time and money so its important for me to understand what I should be doing now.
My GRE score is 1250 (Quant : 800, Verbal : 450). Toefl is pending on 25th September. I’m not sure about getting into very good schools there but I have felt till now that I’d be easier for me there to lead a better lifestyle and a better pay.
Is the current scenario for civil engineers job opportunities in the US good.?
Is it advisable to do MS there and leave L&T job. The major reason I ask this is cause I can give all my efforts willingly into any subject I choose for masters. I’d like to know which subject has more scope and I won’t have a problem dealing with it in a willing and interesting manner.
Dhruv,
Congrats on job offer ! As you said, life in US can be very comfortable. Check out Settle in US or India In any case, what is your passion ? Higher education or Job ? If it is higher education, go for MS…if you are not sure, then you need to think….read this article Goal for MS in USA
I do understand, it is a life changing decision. Take some time to think about where your heart lies…. Worst case, you can always find a better job in India, after MS, if job market is bad in US…
My passion is more towards the job and more specifically a higher pay as compared to India to be frank. Thats why the flexibility in taking up masters related to the civil engineering field which the current industry would demand most. What would you suggest if this is the case of my mindset?
Do you have any idea of the market scenario corresponding to engineers of this field?
Hey, after quite some online research, conversations and inspiring case histories, I feel like doing MS in transportation engg. Now that my thought process regarding the subject is channelized, I’m still not sure of what to do as far as choosing from the 2 is concerned cause I don’t know according to the current scenario if I’d be able to return back the monetary investment that my relatives would invest in my Masters studies. I’d definitely get the knowledge value of the financial resources invested but I’ll need a job there too to take care of the return of the monetary investment. I know you can never say if you’d get a job after MS there or if you’ll get an H1 or not but I just need to take calculated risks based on chances of getting a job, so that I can plan accordingly. Hope you can give me some suggestions or throw some light on current statistics of my field people getting jobs if you know about it.
hi..
i m in 3rd yr wanted to do MS in structures..just after completion of my B.Tech , but few days ago came to know that it will be very difficult to get job from next year just because of crises on yr 2012 which will greatly affect US and whole world and that time most company will need MBAs .I am suggested me to take GMAT instead of GRE .. n i will be paid better salary n lifestyle after MBA as compare to MS .
is it true ?? what is the job scenario there …
what should i do ??? plz help..
prakhar,
Let me ask you one thing, are you interested in pursuing higher education or getting a job in America ? Read this article Goal for MS in US ? Job ? Well, US economy is not doing very well…No one knows the future.
Your goal for higher education should be clear.
Hey!!
I did my PUC in science (PCMC). Now i am in my second year of b.com. I want to go abroad for higher studies. I am confused as to which course to choose. Please help! I am good at Math, don’t have accounts base. Can i do MS in Information System? What is the scope for it? Any other suggestions? Kindly reply ASAP.
Hema,
Yes, can do MS in IS, if thats what you like to do. You need to identify what is your passion and go for it. You dont have to be good at everything, you need to be passionate about what you want to study. Also, one thing you need to watch out is, some schools do not accept 15 years of education for applying to MS. Read this article B-schools 15 year of education . Identify your passion, do research on schools that fits your interest, talk to them about requirements, then plan for your higher education.
Thank you for your response. I’m quite interested in doing MS in IS coz its a mix of both technical and management aspects. Since the US economy is going down now, is it wise to pursue higher studies in the US or just go for a job in India after B.Com and wait for the economy to stabilize? And also, now i am confused between doing MBA or MS again!! Which of these has a greater demand and pay as of now? ( I don’t mind working in the US for some time!!)

hello sir,
I’ve completed my B.E, Computer Science this year(2011) and I’m going to start working from the next week. I’m interested in technical things. I’m thinking of giving my GRE this year. But its not a whole- hearted decision. I’m confused between MS and MBA. I’m not that interested in management kind of subjects. But, now that people are talking about recession again, I’m worried about doing my MS in the US. And will MS be useful only for people interested in becoming a lecturer? And if I finish my MS in US and get back to India, will i have better job opportunities.?
Great information. Thanks.
If you are so much interested to move to MBA career, consider doing MBA after 2 to 3 years after BE/B.Tech and try to skip MS if possible.
I want to do MS in US but i am not technically strong, can I able to manage with the advanced papers?????

thanks for such a good post sir..
this is yuvraj here… i’ve recently passed my b.tech(E.C.E).. i want to get higher education from a good university in U.S or CANADA.. my problem is same i.e. MS or MBA????
sir,i want to be an entrepreneur in future.. and i’ve heard that its not necessary go for mba as it doesn’t teaches how to run a business or an organisation..
Apart from that i don’t have such good financial background.. i can afford in between 10-15 lacs..
–as a good mba in gud university requires 30-40 lacs, its not so easy for me.. also i’m a fresher right now and gud universities require 3-5 years of work ex. as you said.. so, what should i do????
should i prepare for GRE or GMAT??? kindly suggest..
Yuvi,
Yes, it is not necessary to get an MBA to be an entrepreneur.
If you plan to do MBA, ideally, you should work for few years to get the value out of your MBA education. You can also save money in first few years and then consider going for MBA at a better school… GMAT is preferred for MBA. Also, GRE is also accepted in many good schools these days.
ohh… thanks a lot sir..
that means i should go for MS first and then after some years for mba if required.. could u plz tell me:
1. Does MS in ECE requires any kind of work experience??
2. My GPA 7.5/10 , how much i have to score in GRE and ILETS to get into
University of Toronto ??
3. How much it would cost me to do my MS from top 20 universities(US and
CANADA?
1. Nope
2. We dont advise on schools and scores
3. It depends on school. Read this article Cost of studying MS in USA I have no idea on Canada schools.
hi sir…..i’m doing my bbm now….and i did science in my PU……i want to do my mba in abroad…..so i want to know the procedure to join …….and i want to know what is CAT,ZAT,MAT..?? i just want to know how to join mba in abroad….and what exams we should write for it???
is there any scholarship facilities i can get…..if yes then how….??
some said that if i want to study in abroad then the universities will give scholarships it seems…….is that right???
if not then what and all the solutions are there to study in abroad….since it is sooo costly….
please reply….i have lack of knowledge about this sooo…please reply
Shravan,
I cannot speak for other countries…If you want to do MBA in US, you should take GMAT…GRE is also accepted in many schools lately… Scholarships are very limited for MBA, it can be very competitive. Other solution would be to join a company that sends you abroad and then you can study MBA part time….
sir….i’m doing my bbm where i did science in pu…….so i want to do mba in abroad….but i don’t know what is the procedure……and i want to know what is CAT,ZAT,MAT…….??????? i just want to know what to do to join mba in abroad and what exams we should write for it??????
and is there any facilities to get scholarships….and if yes then how??
sir please reply me…..i have lack of knowledge about this…….please
Hi,
I have 8 years of experience in IT as Oracle developer (for 5 years) and IT Manager (3 years), I lost my job last year in UAE and since that time (1 year) , I’m jobless, I tried hard in local market and not able to get a job, So i apply to some person, who says that he will do H1B visa for me, but he don’t tell me, what will he pay to me, what work i will do in his company, only he asked me to give USD 2000 and now he ask again USD 1500 dollars, he told me i need to pay him total USD 6800 for my H1B case, i already send him all my documents but I don’t know, is it all going fine,
my questions are that,
1) Is it ok to go with that person ( as i am now in doubt regarding H1B)? or what should i ask him , as you can understand i’m deeply desperate for a job and he is the only person, who says that he may help me getting a H1B, but what i read on internet regarding regualations of H1B, it make me confused.
2) I have a MS in IT offer from a uk university which amount to be GBP 10080 , 1 year program in enterprise system (IT).
3) I have a offer from a german university for MS in informatics for (2 years).
I’m really confused what option you think is better to me, as i’m still jobless and don’t want lost further time. Please let me know which option may be better to go with.
Regards,
Farhan
Don’t ever go with person like this. H1B processing fees will be paid by employer so he is cheating you. What u will do if he abscond with your money that too 6800$. Think before you leap!!!!
If the company hasn’t told you anything about the job, then that’s the first red flag. If they are asking you to submit huge sum of 6800, then that’s another red flag.
It’s best to stay away from such employers. You should now work on recover your money from the company.
Hi Kumar,
I think I went through your posts a the right time.
1. I am working in the bay area (Completed Masters) on H1B. Though its been a year and a half I am working here, I am very passionate to do my MBA. My company pays the partial amount.
Can you suggest me, if I can get a student loan so that I pay the remaining amount by myself. I plan to do my MBA from private school.
2. Also, I would like to know how a graduate or Masters certificate/Professional development certification in the field of management from good school differ from an MBA. Is it worth going for this instead of an MBA (this is much cheaper costing$14,000 USD).
It would be great if you can suggest me on this. It would be very helpful.
Thank you much for your posts. Appreciated!!
Best Regards,
Abhishek

Hi kumar.. Thanks for the informative article.
I am in the fourth year of B.E Mechanical Engineering. I am planning on doing my masters in either Industrial engineering or Enginnering Management. Which of the two are better?
I have scored 1400 in my gre and have a cgpa of 8 . What are my chances of getting a good college in the us? And lastly is work experience an important criteria for admissions in these two courses?
Hello Sir,
I am pursuing by B-Tech. in CSE from Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology,IP University,Delhi. I have a keen interest in computers and would like to take it further after B-tech. However, I plan to go into entrepreneurship or probably a business oriented position in the years to come. Moreover, seeing the present scenario in the pay package and the success rate,my personal choice is that whatever I pursue after B-tech.,I do it from the US.Now,I just want to ask that will the following be a wise option for me:
Doing MS in Computer Science from the US followed by 2-3 years of job and then an MBA from US Itself.
Kindly reply ASAP,as this is a major dilemma I am facing.
If you are in the real pursuit of knowledge and excellency ,then your decision is the best.Do MS after btech and later with suficien work experience do an MBA.US b schools gives prior importance to profile.so doing an MS will add to it.Regarding earnings,in the long run you will surely earn Above 100k…
so go aheaad, all the best.keep your morale up.
Thanks a lot for your reply, sir.I would be highly obliged if you could let me know as to what is the estimated expense for the entire course and what are the chances of getting a decent scholarship for an Indian student. Moreover, what are the job opportunities available in US itself after an MS in Computer Science(And an estimate about the average pay offered too).
hi, sir
well m karthik have passed out my bbm in 2011 i have no job experience,
Iam interested in doing masters is it fine if i do ms rather then doing mba.
And which country is the best to do my masters (uk or us)
please help me ….
Hello Sir,
I have completed my Bachelors of Engineering (B.E) from DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering,University of Mumbai. My average percentage has been 81%. I have given my GRE (1360/1600) and TOEFL (113/120).I had applied for MS in CS and have secured admits from USC,NYU,NSCU,Stony brook,Columbia university and UPENN. However I have also secured a job in JP Morgan Chase for the post of junior finance analyst. I am really confused whether I should go for MS or take up the job and work for 2-3 years and go for MBA. As far as interest is concerned I am not sure in what I am actually interested. If I plan for MBA I will do it in finance. My academics during engineering have been excellent and I had no difficulty in technical aspects during my undergraduate, But m not able to confirm or ascertain whether m really interested in technical. As far as finance goes, I have no knowledge in finance and I had communicated this to my recruiters during interview.
But one thing I am sure for whatever I choose, I will put my 100%hardwork n seek success. So kindly advice me what shud i do:
Go for MS or take up the job in JP korgan Chase
Rameez,
Congrats on your admissions ! You have admissions from few of the best schools…I can imagine, decision can be tricky…
Let me ask you,
Where do you see yourself in 10 years from you ?
Take time to think.
You need to identify your passion, thats the trick. Talk to few people working as Financial Analyst, understand the job, think if you would really like it…
If you plan to do MBA, I would totally recommend working for two to three years, read this When to do MBA ? Directly After B.tech ? for clarification. Also, plan for financing your MBA, as it is an expensive affair.
hello Mr. Rameez..
i’ve something to ask you. Can i get your email address plz???
hi
can i do my m.s. in u.s after btech; and then mba after ms?? please help me because i am totally confused right now. if i follow this order then will i get a good career ahead??
thanking you in advance,
nick
Nick, Yes you can. But why do you want to MS and then MBA. What is your passion ? Talk to your seniors, friends or professors and get advice. You do not need two masters for career.
Hi Kumar,
Im a CS Engineer, with 2 years of experience at Infosys.Im facing with a rather unusual dilemma. I like coding and Maths and also like Managing things. One day i would like to start a business of my own.
Im already 23, and i feel that this is the right time for me to pursue a higher education degree.
But im short on cash right now, and if i opt to study for an MBA, even in India, it would be a costly affair(cause scholarships are scarce). On further researching, i came across MS in Industrial Engineering, MS in Operations Research and MS in FE as interesting courses. They have the right blend of Maths and Coding, and quantitative skills. The plus point here would be that im hoping to get a scholarship, which would help me a lot.
Since, my reason is heavily weighed on the chance that i may get a scholarship, do you think it’s a good idea to go ahead with an MS. If so, then the MS course in US would be much cheaper than an MBA course in India( It costs about 11 lakhs for two years).
Please advice.
Thanks in advance!
Priya
Priya,
What is your end goal ? Become an Entrepreneur or work in a company in a technical or leadership role ? I do understand the financial situation and where you are coming from…Playing safe about career may not help you in the long run…Think about your end goal, give it some thought and take a decision.
In my view, just getting higher education without adding value may not be your best investment of time, unless you really enjoy research and passionate about PhD…
Thanks Kumar… This does mean a lot to me..
i discontinued my btech when i was in my 3rd year as i got married, its been 4 Years now since i discontinued,i would want to complete my BE now,I am 24 now,how do i go about this?
why did you do an early marriage…and why do you feel like continuing now?
The circumstances at home have made me get married,Its quite personal.
Its just that i want to continue now as i am interested…is it possible?
Shreya,
It is never late. You should pursue your passion. It is possible. Talk to your engineering college or University, get back to college and complete B.tech.
Thanks Kumar for a very informative article .
I am currently in my 3rd year of chemical engineering. I am looking for a job opportunity in US or Germany after my degree, please tell me if MS is the best option ? And is it true that chances of getting in top MBA colleges in US improves after MS there ??
Not necessarily, getting MS will not necessarily improve your chances. May be it may make your application a little stronger, if you have good grades and get good recommendations.
