MS vs MBA in USA – Fees, Funding ? How to Decide ?

This is the second article on MS vs MBA in the USA. If you have not read it, please read the first article:  Should I apply for MS or MBA in the US ? difference ? It talks about the differences between MS vs MBA and what each of the degrees focuses on. In this article, we will look at aspects of funding, fee and other aspects.

Fees  MBA vs MS? Which is cheap? State University Vs Private Schools

MS tuition fee is typically much cheaper than MBA.  Business schools have their own course fee structure. Also, in terms of fees, US State schools fee is always cheaper than Private Schools. For instance, MBA at private school like University of Chicago will cost you ONLY the tuition for NINE MONTHS is $74,919 as of year 2022.

As a non-resident, MBA at a state school like University of Wisconsin will cost you $47,013  for a 9 months for the year 2022.  Also, fees at University of Houston Masters program for MBA is around $1397 per credit in 2022, which comes to $12,573 per semester if you take 9 credits. Not going into specifics, but if you look at MS fees as well, it is cheaper to study in state schools.

The summary is that state schools always have a lesser fee as they are state-funded. For more details, read Cost of MS / MBA in US – Apply for Cheaper Schools

Funding – TA, RA, GA for MBA and MS ?

Funding is a big thing for students and most common types of funding as we have explained are in the form of Teaching Assistantships(TA), Research Assistantship(RA) and Graduate Assistantship(GA). Check the post about what are TA, GA and RA for more info if you do not know with funding info.

Let’s think logically first, MS is more technical and research oriented, logically speaking if the University has more research funding then, there is more funding for MS. On the other hand, MBA, it is not tied very much to research, where do funds come from?  The only source for MBA funding is Fellowships, scholarships, or TAs for Undergrad Business students.

If you notice, for MBA, the research part is almost not there unless you are in Ph.D. Guess what, if you are MBA and applying for funding in Business school,  MS people of Marketing or Finance are competition to you for that too.  So, your option is to work in other departments or have no funding at all.

But for MS, you have many options like working as RA, TA or GA in your department or other department based on your background.  Not only logically, but in reality too, there is less funding for MBA than for MS due to the research focus and other related aspects. You may get in-state tuition in state universities if you stay long enough like year or so and pay taxes in that states by working on a work visa, but in private schools forget about funding…

Should you study MS or MBA? How to decide ?

I know most of you want to be managers and entrepreneurs in future by jumping into MBA right after B.Tech, B.A or B.Com… Let me tell you the truth folks, You will learn very little if you go to MBA without two to three years of work experience. You have to work in an organization setting to fully comprehend and appreciate the full potential of MBA.  For this reason, most of the business schools have a requirement of 3 to 5 years of work experience as a major factor.

Think about this, “if you were never a team member, how will you understand the team member’s problems and their perspective if you were never a team member and directly have become a manager”. So, start at the base and then climb up ! My recommendation is if you are starting your career, then do not go for MBA, work and then go. Read MBA after B.tech or With Work Experience ?. As of MS is concerned, as I said in previous posts there are many types of students who would like to come to the US for education and some for jobs only.  Depending on your situation, you may pick one of the below.

  • Typically, MS is done for anyone with career path of PhD  or research.
  • If you want to do Ph.D. someday and be professor, then MS and PhD integrated program.
  • If you worked for two years, and have money to support your MBA financially, then MBA
  • If you are not sure what you want to do, then take time to think about what you really like and where you see yourself in next 10 years and take a decision on what makes sense for your career path.

Overall, it is up to your passion on where you want to be in the next 10 years, try to do something that will help you get there…it is your decision, plan well and go for your passion… I am not trying to discourage anyone to do MBA right after B.Tech, but just telling you the facts I have learnt.  Good Luck ! Make an informed decision….It is your future !

What are your thoughts ? Anything to add that I have missed ?

  1. Hello Sir i need some serious advice for one of my friends.

Her parents are hellbent on sending her to USA for pursuing MS in IT.But she plans to return back to India after completing her MS.She has completed her Bsc in IT.

Now for doing MS she will need to do one year MSc in IT here and then after completing that, carry on with MS.

    Now here are my queries:

Is is a wise decision to do such thing or waste of time and money?

What value will this degree have in India?

Will it provide better job opportunities in India compared to an MBA graduate?

Is it better to do MBA from here only rather than going for MS(with no plans to work there)?

Will a MS from USA with say 1 year of work xp get more pay than a MBA from India with same work xp?

please answer these questions,as she does not have much time to decide and need some solid information to show to her parents to change their opinion.

Well, education should be pursued by passion. If she is doing just for degree there is no value…

What value will this degree have in India?
Well, in my view, without experience it would have same value as like any other M.tech in India, may be from a premier school.

Will it provide better job opportunities in India compared to an MBA graduate?
Both are different, you cannot compare.

Is it better to do MBA from here only rather than going for MS(with no plans to work there)?
Both are different tracks, you cannot compare.

Will a MS from USA with say 1 year of work xp get more pay than a MBA from India with same work xp?
It totally varies by school you attend and your talent. We cannot give a generic number and judge the degree.

    • Amit,
There is nothing etched on stone. It depends on various factors…10th and 12th percentage is not counted for admission. They look at B.tech only…If you have less percentage, then you can offset by good GRE and TOEFL Scores…

  3. Hi Kumar

I think my situation is a bit different than most of the posts here. I have over 15 years of work experience in IT industry after completing my masters in computer science in India. Now the job scenario is very unstable in the US, and I am hoping that getting a MBA degree would help me in that search. I have specific following questions and your input would be valuable. As you can guess, I am a bit overwhelmed and confused,

    1. Will getting MBA at this point be helpful?
    2. What field of MBA would be helpful? management / finance/ any suggestion?
    3. Does full time vs part time MBA have any influence on getting a better job?
    4. Does MBA college reputation influence the job market after completing MBA?
    5. Where can you work with MBA after IT industry experience? Do I have to stick to IT field?
    6. What will be the career path ? management / business analyst?

      Here are my thoughts

      1. Will getting MBA at this point be helpful?
Well, depends…You have a lot of experience…not sure if it will add value directly…but will help you network with C level execs and may be jump to that level.

      2. What field of MBA would be helpful? management / finance/ any suggestion?
This is a personal choice, depends on what you want to do with your MBA…Management would be good to go to leadership roles..

      3. Does full time vs part time MBA have any influence on getting a better job?
It depends, both have merits and demerits…but I would go for Full time MBA. You have your Cohort to interact with and form a team..

      4. Does MBA college reputation influence the job market after completing MBA?
Unless you have good network,…college brand matters a lot to make the jump from one league to other league.

      5. Where can you work with MBA after IT industry experience? Do I have to stick to IT field?
Not necessarily. You can do internship and change your career. You can stick to your core field as well…

      6. What will be the career path ? management / business analyst?
Well, depends…if you are changing paths then you can start off as business analyst…if not, you can get into management.

I have excellent grades in engineering,at the same time, i now at the age of 19 own a remote Cab and advertising company..

I just need a note from your experience doing mba after ms.Was doing ms wrong?

    • Albin,
B.Tech & M.Tech is one track, unlike MBA is different track. You cannot compare both. You seem to have some entrepreneurship traits as you own a cab…MBA would definitely help you with your business, you will learn lot of case studies and understand why few businesses succeed and why some fail….

Pursue your passion… Yes, in my case pursuing MS was not the best idea….I should have waited and done MBA…

      Good Luck !

  7. Hi,

My H1B was upgraded to Premium and I got RFE after that. Company sent a RFE response and till now the online status says “RFE response review”. But I got a mail from the company that USCIS has issued 2nd RFE. When I queried the reason, the attorney said that since the case was upgraded to premium, there could be 2 rfe’s raised, one for normal and another for premium. Also she confirmed that first RFE is for premium. Is it possible to happen like this? If so, then my 2nd RFE will be queued as normal processing (60 days)?

    Reply
    • USCIS can issue 2nd RFE if they require further documentation/clarification on the documents submitted in response to 1st RFE.

As your petition has already been upgrade to premium, any RFE responses will be handled within 15 calendar day window.

  8. Hi Kumar,

First of all let me thank you for helping so many of us out here. I’m really grateful to you.

    Now my situation –

    1. I’ve completed Engineering in Electronics and communication field.
2.I’m working in a software company in Testing domain for 10 months now.

At this point of time i clearly know what i want to do and what i’m interested in. I want to work in management field and be an entrepreneur. I’m interested in studying MBA in finance.

    My questions –
    1. Will experience of working in software field for couple of years will be of any help for me to get into a good university in the US, or to get a job after studying MBA, will it count in anyway?
    2. Also my background is Electronics, so will it be a disadvantage if i’m changing my career direction towards finance?
3.I plan to work for 2 or 3 years in software field in testing for experience and then do MBA in finance in a good university in US and take up a job there. Is this a good idea?

Really looking forward for your inputs on this.

    Thanks. 🙂

Welcome ! Here are my thoughts
      1. Yes. Good Schools required at least 2 to 3 years of experience for MBA. Yes, it will count
      2. Nope. If you would like to make a career switch, you need to study in really good schools to change your career direction.
      3. Yes, absolutely. You can prep for GMAT and have everything sorted out..

It is hard to generalize, but in my view, the part time jobs have reduced in many schools, including assistantships due to funding cuts…I am not sure about job scenario in India without experience after MS…Ideally, one or two years should help you… Do not worry about getting selected in schools. Focus on your GMAT and try to submit good recommendation letters with Application, you should be fine….

  16. Hi Kumar,

First of all let me thank you for providing useful information to so many. You are doing great service.

I read almost all of your responses about doing MS in the US but would still appreciate a reply from you on similar lines.

    About me:[]
    – Top-ranked in MCA
    – 6 years of product development experience in Oracle and XYZ company
    – Career going high on work satisfaction and salary front.
    – Feel ‘further learning’/’working in US’ itch from time to time
    – Married with no kids

Please provide some info on the following:
    1. How good/bad is MS for married students. Can I bring wife along on F1?
    2. Having my CS concepts strong and programming fingers agile, what percentage of the fee can I manage just though scholarship/paid project work?
    3. I definitely don’t want to study in US and come back – roughly what percentage of Indian MS students land up with such scenario?
    4. Am I already too late for MS ? (Age around 31) 😉

I am not interested in Phd as I love the applied form of CS too much.

I hope to hear from you.

      Here are my thoughts,
      1. It depends on how you look at it. As you do not have kids yet, should be fine. Just matter of balancing everything. Yes, you can on F2 Visa.
      2. Well, you have lot of experience, if you get the numbers right for GRE / TOEFL, you should be able to get full waiver and also get paid every month. Just need to pick the right school.
      3. Honestly, most of them( above 95%) end up staying in US…everyone talks about coming back, but no one comes back…
      4. You are not ! In fact, that age is very common ( I would say it is young, excluding Indians in class)

Let me know if you have any questions,

  17. Hello Kumar,
I really appreciate for your patience/interest for answering all the queries. I liked the definitions and the introduction part you have posted. As usually I also have a question for which I was not able to find the answer in previous posts, Hope you would help me.
I have completed my 3 years bachelors degree in Commerce stream (B.com) in October 2010, but I have started it in June 2005.
After one year of starting it I have discontinued it, and started working.
From 2007 I have joined an IT company as Online Marketing Trainee and got promoted to the next levels twice. As a part of my job role recently I have been working with software applications and languages and started getting to know more about it. As I do so, I am being very interested with the depth of the subject and variations and the Impact of IT technology in the economy.
Finally I am considering myself to become an IT professional, for that I want to do MS in IT (Developer Program) from an International University(AUS/CAN/USA) and also a minimum of 3 to 5 years of work experience abroad. My final goal is to have and maintain an e-commerce company.
So I want to know your suggestion on the below points.
    1) Can I get admission for MS in IT with a B.com bachelor degree only.
    2) Will I be eligible to get work permit in abroad countries with irrelevant bachelor degree.
    3) Which country would be best suitable for my profile.
    4) Do you suggest any foundational courses to get the admissions for IT course.

    Thanks a lot,
    Naveen,

    • Naveen,
      Here are my thoughts,
      1. It varies by school. Many schools require 16 years of education…Having said that, you just have to talk to schools you plan to apply and then make a decision. Some schools recognize 3 year bachelors from India for MS.
      2. At least in US, you should be able to because you will have Masters.
      3. Well, I cannot comment about other countries. US should be a good choice…
      4. The school you join might force you to take foundation courses as your background degree is not in computer sciences. So, do not worry about it now.

      Hope it helps,

I’m in a unique scenario where I’ve worked for about 3 years now and have been blessed with some promotions to managerial position. I realize that I could use a bit of both Tech and management course model (letting the work experience or lack of it drive the career path has been invaluable to me). Does anyone know of any MS-MBA integrated programs? Private and/or state school?

What do you want to do after few years with MS ?

There will not be any problem. You can do MS after 4 year. If your passion is to do research and become a professor after PhD, you must be fine in US…though it is getting a little challenging these days….but, you can still find something in some other country to do research and pursue your passion…

    • Spurthi, It depends on the school. Some schools accept 15 years of education, some do not…It is just university policy and their evaluation of your Indian B.com to see if it is equivalent to an American Bachelors degree. If you plan to do MS in Economics, Finance…you may be able to convince the committee that you have enough education and your degree is equivalent. It is how you talk to them and present yourself and they recognizing your school and degree. If not, they will mention you what to do to be eligible. Talk to few schools.

I have 4 years of experience in IT.Initial 1.5 years i was into java /j2ee development.then I had to move into database and automation testing due to recession. Now I am planning to boost my career by doing some post graduation from outside india. I thought about MS and Mba
For mba from Usa…i dont i would be able to manage it financially
ms …i guess it will take around 20 lakhs including everthing.
please guide me how to bounce back in my career.I need you valuable suggestions.

Just getting MS or MBA will not guarantee you anything…Think about what you really like either Management or Technical field. Based on your interest pick something that you like. You do not have to study MBA in USA to succeed in your career…

My husband holds a bachelor degree in Computer Science and 7 years of exp in Automation Testing field , he is going to US with his L1b blanket by the end of this month, my doubts are
Can he do part time studies while working in US?
what can he study MBA or MS?
Which can boost up his career and salary?
And we are planning to settle down in USA so tell me in which way he can start his higher studies.
Then i have 1 year of exp in as400, am coming on l2 visa
can i do a part time studies?
which can i study MBA or MS?

Thanks for your help and contribution.

Yes, he can study either MS or MBA. You can study on L2 as well. You can also study either of them. Study something that you are passionate about.

I had read two parts of your experience, i got great help. Thanks.
Actually I want your suggestion for my problem, i.e., TRUTH IS THAT I WAS UNAWARE OF MS AND MBA’S DIFFERENCE prior to your article while applying to univ.
But my condition is that I got one admit from US public univ. for MS in management as they told me that it is all based on my credentials AND other4 admits for MBA for which i did applied. AND according to ranking, place and teaching faculty , I have decided to go with the school which has given me admit for MS.
my background is B.COM(HONOURS) from DELHI UNIVERSITY (REGULAR) + PGDBA from SIKKIM MANIPAL UNIVERSITY (DISTANCE EDUCATION) .

Plz suggest me which option should i choose. I WILL NOT BLAME ANYTHING TO YOU, just need your suggestion.

I m B.Tech 3rd yr student in ECE stream. I want to do MS from foreign country like USA in same (Electronics & Comm.) field. Kindly guide me if I had to give both tests of GRE (General & Subject) or only general test is enough for MS???? Also suggest in which pattern should I take the test(new or old). Is new pattern easy or tough????

    Reply
    • Vikas, for most of the schools General GRE is sufficient. Some schools explicitly mention if they require Subject GRE. If I were you, I would take it in the old pattern. We cannot tell much about new pattern as we lack data…

  32. Hello,

I have around 10 years experience in the IT field and have been primarily based in India. I have done my Bachelors in Electronics Engineering. My main job role has been along the lines of a software engineer/tech lead and recently I have moved up the career ladder and working as a development manager. I would like to add more value to my profile by working in the US and gaining more exposure along both technical and business lines. However I would like to further my future role as a techie with hands on development experience rather than as a manager. I would definitely like to do my MS there, but a family to support and financial constraints make it tough. How you do rate my chances there if I apply for an H1B visa and get it? How is the job market now? I should have come there before, but well better late than never!

It is a tough market in US with economy…H1B approval depends on various factors including your role and the company stuff, hard to generalize. You have tremendous experience and you must do fine with H1B as long as the company that files you H1B files properly for a role that focuses on your skills. About Market now, it is not the best…depends on whom you ask…. I think with your skills, you must do fine…

If you are looking to build a great team for starting up business, top 10 schools are best…It will be expensive…be prepared.

In reality, it is very tough time for you and for everyone in the job market because of the recession, there is nothing we can do about it..we can only work harder and hope for the best. Keep your spirit up and try to apply more, use references and Social media or job search….Network with more people and talk to some people in industry and see what they are looking for and try to see how you can add value to your profile. • Ashish, If you are inclined more towards management, MBA is a great option. The only challenge is affordability…You can try to plan your finances and apply for a good state school…GMAT around 700 would be very good. You are doing a great job, keep it up!

I have one year exp in system software in HP. So when I leave for Higher studies I ll have two year work ex. Decent Under grad records, good appreciations and achievements in work (both technical & non technical : like presentations to world wide audience, marketing blogs etc). I hope a good gre score too.

    I am confused b/w MS & MBA:
    My clauses:

-> I can be in US for max 4-5 years. With in this time I have to recover completely the education expenses.
-> When I come back to India, I really should make a difference in the industry (both salary and position) in comparison to my batch mates who joined with me.

FYI: I had got opportunity just after my under grad but couldn’t take risk that time.

I have explained my situation quite straightly, indeed many US aspirants will be of same plight. So your perspective and thoughts will be valuable, waiting for the same.

    • Yes, you can recover your expenses in 2 to 3 years, depending on the school and how much you have paid for MS or MBA. If you go to private school and end up paying around 100K, then you may have hard time unless you get a really good job….. For second one, you should work in US for 3 years or more to make a difference in position when you go back…

If you take some business classes like accounting or finance for your electives that would be good. Ideally, doing an internship as Business Analyst would help. Please post your questions in Forum. It will help others too.

      • To Kumar sir,
Hello sir. I am studying B-Tech in ECE at IIT-G. All I want is just making money so much so that I have sumptuous meals everyday in luxurious Taj Krishna hotel, own a luxury car as costly as Mercedes/Lamborghini .This would alone satisfy me-call me a mercenary,I don’t mind! With such a propensity added with my understanding that India is not much lagging behind USA, not in terms of development as of now but in terms of job prospects primarily bec. 1$ is not 45 INR, its just some 15.5 INR-that would expose an insidious fallacy in Indian minds, for instance two typical software fellows of the same status one in US and other in India in the same company would enjoy more or less same sort of lifestyle(again in terms of purchasing power and not in terms of the so-called bliss of living in a developed country like America); I think MBA and not an MS would seem promising for a person with a disposition like me. Isn’t it?
And the lucrativeness of MBA in IIM/ISB would simply transcend the one obtained by doing MS in USA;I agree that it may not be that promising as other B-schools in USA-but future says me,Indian MBA would better bec. of India’s excellence in GDP and non-inclusive growth. I as such have interest in both the fields and I am growing/inculcating an increasing tendency towards MBA. I want to know just whether I am correct or not in the facts that I presumptuously think so:
You don’t earn that much money(money here being some entity that purchases goods for you not something naively obtained by multiplying with exchange rate) or you would earn almost the same amount if you do MS compared to a similarly placed position in India.Isn’t it?
Secondly, always MBA pay is higher and promising in future growth compared to MS.And study in IIM/ISB diligently and ingeniously would cater to my needs and desires. Won’t it?

I am very impressed by your language and your articulation of thoughts !
Well, I cannot deny your statements about GDP, growth in India and value of MBA from IIMs. Based on my perception, it feels to me that MBA would be your cup of tea…Let me try to ask you couple of questions… What are you passionate about ? Where do you see yourself down the lane in 10 years ?
MBA without work experience may not fetch you the right education experience….coming back to point, your decision to do MBA depends on what you really want to achieve and where is the best place in the world to achieve it…It is about knowledge couple with networking with executives…
Question about doing MS or MBA is a personal preference on what you are passionate about and what you want to with your life…you cannot really compare the ROI as both are mutually exclusive cases.

          • Thank you for your reply, sir. Being frank, my passion is just about making huge money, enjoy a very luxurious life that I can’t describe. This is what I aspire to become. So, in opinion pursuing MBA as I mentioned would usher in a brighter path to my goals,I suppose. Well, if a rightful MBA degree demands a prior work exposure, let me go by the same.Am I thinking in the right direction?Going further, I am always open to become CEO of a reputed organization or so; this would meet my aims-so I want to be. I would like to ask you, thinking MBA is a viable option, where should I do MBA-India(IIM/ISB) or abroad? I feel either of the choices is okay.

          • hi akhilesh,
