MBA Admission Deadlines Concept Round 1, 2 and 3 for Fall. Why so many?

Typically(for most of the schools), when you start to apply for MS program in US, you may notice in the universities websites  just deadlines corresponding to fall, spring or summer. It would just be just one date. But, for MBA in top ranked schools, the deadlines work differently. Here are few thoughts on this.

How does MBA admission deadlines work in top ranked US schools ?

The deadlines in reputed schools work differently, there is a concept of round. They would have two to three sets of different deadlines for different rounds. They would name it as Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3.  Each round will have a decision date too. What it means is, you will hear back from them about your admission by that date.

Why so many Rounds for admission?

Well, they want to allow students plan ahead of time based on their status and they want to have their load distributed evenly. Especially for international students, if you apply for round 1, you will have a decision by January and you can start preparing much ahead of time. Also, they want to encourage students to plan well and apply early for consideration of scholarships or any assistantships.

Will it make any difference applying to Round 1 vs Round 3 ?

Obviously most of the times yes for scholarships and assistantships (some schools it does not matter) ! They recommend you to apply for Round 1 for consideration of scholarships. But, they also clearly state, you should not apply hastily without having your application complete and properly done. Especially, stuff like your Essays, Standardized tests, etc. They stress that you have to apply when you feel you are fully prepared and have everything ready for application. But, as far as admission is concerned, if you are the right candidate, it will not make any difference…but, why take the chance ? apply early.

Does All MBA schools have the Rounds concept ?

No. It totally depends on the school and their policies. You will notice this concept in big schools where MBA program is very popular and they have full time programs.
