General Tips for US Visa Stamping at Consulate

  • Reach at least 30 minutes before the appointment time.
  • Do not schedule your appointment from 7.30 AM to 9 AM windows, as the consulate is crowded. The preferred time slot is to schedule your appointment between 9 AM and 10 AM.
  • Take a cab to get to the consulate. Preferably book hourly rental package taxis as this saves time and effort after the interview. Ask the taxi driver to wait in the adjacent street. Write down the number of the car and number of the cab driver, if you need to call the person after the interview.
  • Dress according to the type of visa class. For an H1B visa, make sure you are in formal attire.
  • Greet the officer as soon as you reach the counter.
  • Please don’t overhear other conversations as they would make you nervous.
  • Keep the documents in order and ensure that it is easy to pull the documents from the file when requested.
  • Mobile phones, wallets, smartwatches, car keys with remote locking, and other electronic devices are not allowed inside the consulate. So please keep all of these at home or give it to the person who accompanied you.

  2. Hello Kumar
I am on F1 OPT Stem. I have applied for H1 B. My husband is in india and he has also applied for H1 B. What should we do so that his visa did not get reject during interview?

    • SS,
What visa interview F2 or H1B ? Either case, all you can do is be prepared and stay positive, no one can guarantee 100% approval.

  3. My H1B approval notice shows “Consulate: Mumbai” but am current working in Canada on Work Permit. Is it mandatory to go for stamping at the location provided in the approval notice, or it can be done at any other consulate location (In my case, it will be Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada). Please advise.

    • H1B,
Check with your attorney and understand how your petition was filed. Carry all supporting documents for the same like project details, etc. If you want to work for client location, then you may need to do amendment, depending on how it was filed.

  5. Hi Kumar,
The details you have provided are clear and informative! I see that you had your visa interview this year (Oct 2019) , so just wanted to know your if you got your H1B visa validity for 3 years. I hear the validity provided is even for a year in recent days. Will the validity be as in the I-797 A notice ?

    • Vinnarsai,
It was shared by one of our readers. Usually, when you get stamping, they will give it until the end of expiry on your I-797 approval notice. If it says one year, you will get so. If it says full 3 years, then you will get full 3 years.

  6. Hi Kumar,

    1) I have a question about DS-160. In the previous US visits section, do we need to included Current visit as well? or does it only pertain to those visits To and From USA?
    2) When booking the visa appoinment date for principal H1B applicant, do we enter the DS 160 for dependent child as well or only the spouse?

    • Ash,
It should include your stay, means when you entered and exited… If you are all going for stamping together, you only use them for appointment booking, I am not sure, if you need to enter it for dependents in DS-160…

  7. How long from the interview did you receive your stamped passport? All resources I have read through do not have a straightforward answer, so I’d appreciate if you can provide a reliable range based on your firsthand experience and research.

  8. Can dependent also go for stamping at the same time with main applicant, or dependent will have to go once Visa is approved for main applicant?

    • Hi Kumar,
I have an approval receipt which has validity till the end of 2020. Never stamped. I quit my job six months before for family reason, hence i am not on any payroll for the last six months.

In this post i have seen, last six months pay slip is one of the mandatory document. As i don’t have this, can i still go for stamping and will it have any impact on my visa stamping ?

      • You can go for it for sure, but if the Consular officer asks, you should have some valid reason to support it…They can ask the reason…
