F1 Visa Defer admission in US schools. I20, Visa issues, Fees? Process – How to Defer?

After going through the complete process from studying for GRE all the way through visa stamping, occasionally due to family situations, financial situations or medical conditions you may not be able to attend the US school for the term you applied though you have visa. This post explains the process of deferring admission in US Universities and other commonly asked questions.

There are three scenarios where you would like to defer your admission.

  1. You have only applied to a US University, you do not Have an admission Confirmed
  2. You have admission confirmed and have I20. But, have not yet got Visa stamping.
  3. You have admission, I20 and have F1 visa stamping done for a  particular University.

Let me try to explain your options one by one.

Scenario 1 : You have only applied to a US University, you do not have an admission Confirmed :

In this situation, you have only applied and would like to just defer the application. The idea is you want the school to consider you for a different term. Lets say you applied for Fall and immediately before their decision, you want to defer admission to Spring. You will need to have a reason for asking deferral. Could be anything. Just be honest.

Steps for Deferring admission and Consequences : It is very simple, all you have to do is ask the University admission office or Graduate school to defer your applications. Most of the times you do not have to pay extra fee. Your application is valid for one year. But, some schools want you to pay again. You will have to check with the Univeristy you are applying in specific. Ideally, you will email three people

1. Admissions coordinator at The Graduate School about deferring admission

2. Admissions coordinator at The actual school you applied to i.e., School of Engineering or School of Business etc

3. (If applicable) Depending on school. You will have to email the International students office or International admissions office.  Some schools do not have this separate.

You do not have to do anything else. You should get a confirmation from the University official saying that your admission  is deferred for Spring. You will be automatically considered for Spring.

Scenario 2 : You have admission confirmed and have I20. But, have not yet got Visa stamping :

This is a much more likely situation where you have applied and have the admission confirmed. The University have sent you an I20 confirming your admission. But, you have not gone for visa stamping. For some reason you have changed your mind and you would like to go to Spring instead of Fall. As always, you will have to state a reason. Be honest and you do not need to lie.

Steps for Deferring admission and Consequences : It is same process as above, all  you have to do is ask the University admission office or Graduate school to defer your applications. You will also need to contact the International Student Advisor or the DSO ( Designated School official) who issues you the I20.

Typically, the Universities let you defer for next term or up to term anytime that ranges within one year since you applied.  Ideally, You do not have to pay any extra fee But, some schools want you to pay again or ask for fee for reserving the admission. You will have to check with the University you are applying in specific. Here is what you do:  you will email these four people

1. Admissions coordinator at The Graduate School about deferring admission

2. Admissions coordinator at The actual school you applied to i.e., School of Engineering or School of Business etc

3. International Student Advisor or Designated School official(DSO) who have sent you the I20.

4. (If applicable) You will have to email the International students office coordinator or International admissions office coordinator.  Most schools have DSO and this office together, but in case they are separate.

Process after your email them about Deferral :

You should get a confirmation from the University official saying that your admission  is deferred for Spring or next semester. Apart from that, you should get a New I20 from the school. The DSO sends you a new I20 with his signature. You will have to use this I20 for doing any F1 Visa stamping process when you intend to do for visa stamping. You will sometimes be asked by the University to send back the old I20, if so, you will have to send them back. Ideally, they just send you the new I20 and you will have to use this for visa stamping.  In fact, what happens is your SEVIS record is updated and new I20 is released that suits for your New visa application.  When you go for visa, you will have to have a valid reason if Visa officer asks you at F1 visa stamping in Consulate.

Scenario 3 : You have admission, I20 and have F1 visa stamping done for a  particular University:

This is a sometimes a likely situation where you have done everything and something goes wrong. Lets say, you got your visa after the Orientation date due to some query issues or any other emergency.  You have been to the F1 visa stamping and got F1 visa for 5 years and the visa states the University name on it.   You will need a very good valid reason here because you will be asked the question at Port of entry. You should be able to tell the proper reason before entering US at the immigration checkpoint at Airport.  Check Sample Visa and I94 How they look

Steps for Deferring admission and Consequences :  It is similar process as above, you email all the three people as said above. And also, the University  lets you defer for next term or up to term anytime that ranges within one year since you applied.  Ideally, You do not have to pay any extra fee But, some schools want you to pay again or ask for fee for reserving the admission. You will have to check with the University you are applying in specific. Here is what you do, you will email these four people. You MUST mention you got F1 Visa.

1. Admissions coordinator at The Graduate School about deferring admission

2. Admissions coordinator at The actual school you applied to i.e., School of Engineering or School of Business etc

3. International Student Advisor or Designated School official(DSO) who have sent you the I20.

4. (If applicable) You will have to email the International students office or International admissions office.

You will have to use this I20 at the port of Entry. It is very critical you have the updated I20 sent by DSO. You will sometimes be asked by the University to send back the old I20, if so, you will have to send them back. Ideally, they just send you the new I20 and you will have to use this at the Port of entry.  In fact, what happens is your SEVIS record is updated and it is reflected in new I20. Be careful and you MUST mention to the DSO that you have F1 visa stamping complete. They will update that information in the SEVIS record. So, when you arrive at the port of entry, the immigration officer knows that you have deferred your admission and you have the right I20 reflecting the same.  Here is a similar question asked  and answered before : I got visa for Fall 2009. Can I come to US for Spring 2010 ? .  Also, Some of you may have ideas to transfer Universities before first semester, if so you should read this article  : Can I transfer to another US University before first semester? Transfer in first week? Issues ?

About F1 Visa validity if admission is Deferred:
[Updated with info from CBP response ]  One of the most asked questions is, “I have got F1 Visa. But I got my admission deferred. Should I go for visa stamping again, after I get deferral”. Simple answer NO, if it is less than 5 months. One of our readers updated that 5 month rule does not apply to new students, it only applies to returning students. He has shared the email confirmation from CBP officer as well.  What it means is that, if your F1 Visa is valid and you have I20 issued for the semester you plan to attend, you are good to go to the same school, without the need to go for stamping gain. Also, if you change schools, you may have to do visa stamping again and you should check with the new school you are coming too about the process.  But, if you are going to same school, you must be good to go.
I always recommend that you check with the school DSO or the local US consulate office as these things keep changing.

  8. Hello Kumar,
I’m currently a new international graduate student (Literature) in the U.S starting from Aug, which means that I’ve got my I-20 stamped and accepted this school’s offer.

However, I applied to another university in another field last year, and the school is now asking if I’d like to defer my admission. I replied “yes”, and they agreed with my deferral.

    Here comes my question:
If I defer my admission to another school to Fall 2013 but it turns out that I did not go to that university, would it causes any problem to my current I-20?

Just want to see if literature and critical theory suit me or not. If not, I’d like to change my major to another field.

  11. Hi.

I currently hold a valid F-1 visa which was issued for the Fall 2011 intake(valid from 9 Sept 2011-30 August 2016). However, due to administrative processing and consequent delay, I could not join. Now, I have the revised I-20 for the same university, same SEVIS no. and program. I wanted to know if I can travel to the US for the Fall 2012 term on the current visa, or do I need to get a new visa??

    Thanks

I have deferred admission and got my updated I-20. I informed my embassy who confirmed that I do not need a new visa. Now I got a better offer from another university with great financial aid. The school is also ranked better.

Am I allowed to take this opportunity and go for visa stamping again? Especially since I deferred admission to another program? Is it okay to apply and take a better opportunity?

  14. Hello all, Request your help urgently!!!

I applied for a university and got an I20 acceptance.
I also got a job offer there soon after sending my university application a few months back and am more interested to work for a few years now.

Will this create a problem for my H1 visa application? Is there an official procedure I need to follow to cancel my I20?

Thanks a lot for going through my query!!

Are you currently outside of US or enrolled in the school program in US? If outside of US, then it will not impact your H-1 processing.

  16. Hi,
I’m an international student on F-1 visa who is a senior in a high school in USA right now.
I will graduate in June 2012.
I have came to USA on an F-1 visa since 9th grade (high school) until now.

    Here’s one simple question:

If I get accepted by a college or university (for undergraduate degree) this march, and I request for a deferment for a year (taking one “gap year” before going to college) promising to matriculate one year later and the college accepts it, then can I still stay in the USA for this whole gap year? I mean, in this gap year am I still considered a valid F-1 visa holder even though I’m not attending any school as a full-time student? Because I’m accepted by a college already, I’m just going to attend it one year later because of the deferment. So can I still stay in the US in this gap year? Or will they say I can’t stay in the US because I’m not a full-time student?

The problem is i am now in the US and will like to defer my admission and later transfer to another uni but i do not want to go to my original school because i would need to pay part of the fees? How do i go about deferring and later transferring without incurring the wrath of the uni?

    • you need to let the school know that you cannot get appointment early so they will deffer your admission to a later term and send you a deferred i-20 which you will use. also thers a chance for emergency appointment you can after getting a later date apply for this and wait for their mail. or meet agents that can help you get such.

Now since I have this year off I’m planning to reapply to other better universities in USA. I wanted to know will this visa cause any problem next year… like will I need a separate visa for the new university to which I get admitted next year? What will happen to this visa? 27. I had to wait about 76 days for my F1 visa (got it on 8th August). I missed my orientation and we also have a rigorous pre-training program before classes start. My actual classes start on Aug 16 so my I20 is still valid. But I do not want to start the program in such an unprepared manner. the admission team might understand and allow me to defer admission. My school’s intake is in every fall, so id have to wait till fall 2012. Do you think this is a valid reason that officers at PoE will allow?

  30. Hi every body,
I have an important question about F1 visa clearance.
I have a bachelor of Mechanical Engineering ,also I have a Master of Nuclear Engineering.
Now, I have been admitted for Master of Mechanical Engineering in a U.S University.
I have sent both mechanical and nuclear engineering transcripts for the university for getting admission and the U.S university has my transcripts, and now I intend to apply for F1 visa. I think my master of Nuclear engineering will cause a long clearance (if they do not reject me!)!
So I intend to Not saying my master degree to the embassy and I would like to remove the master of nuclear engineering from my resume and I wont write it in the Ds-160 visa form. However, my main concern is that whether the embassy compares my resume and my information with the resume which I have sent to the university already or not? dose the embassy checks my resume and my records with the university?

Thank in advance for your help,
I look forward to hearing from you.

  31. Hi,
I have been staying in United States from April 2005. I came to United States on H-4 visa, as a dependent on my Mom. I did my high school here. I went to a U.S college for three years studying bachelors in Electrical Engineering. When I was in third year I became 21, so I could no longer stay as a H4 visa and study, so I applied for student visa on February 2011. My student visa got approved, and i got I-20 in June and a letter from USCIS stating that my visa was approved. In the same June month I realised that I could no longer study at the college I have been attending due to my previous semester’s academic performance. My poor academic performance is due to my poor health conditions. I got my I-20 until August 2012. I did not know my university would deny me in the last minute.
What should I do? Can I still study in United States at other Institution?
If so, do I have to apply to that Institute and get in first?
Could I get my student visa deferred to Spring semester (next semester) until I get my admissions guarenteed at another University?
I am not going to fall out-of-status right?
Or can I go to India finish my Bachelors up there and come back to United States on student Visa for Masters?

Please let me know. I am terribly confused and terrified as of what is going to happen next in my life. Please reply.

  32. Hi,
When I contacted the US consulate, they say that “Any student with a valid visa who has chosen to defer admission to the very next semester need not re-apply for a new visa, provided he/she is going to the same University and has a valid I-20, even if the SEVIS number differs on the new I-20”

So if I defer my admission by one year, then I should reapply for the visa?

Thanks a lot in advance !

I am currently on OPT Extension(F1 Visa) and i will be getting married next month. I am planning to bring my wife on F2 dependent visa. i have few questions regarding the same.
    1) Is it really difficult to get the F2 dependent visa now a days even though i have my pay stubs, W2 for the last 2 years and my employer letter as well.
    2) when she goes for the F2 dependent visa interview do i need to show the entire amount what ever mentioned in the dependent I20 or some amount which shows that i have sufficient money for both of us.(Not to forget i am getting salary on a monthly basis here). please i need some inputs on this one.
    3) If it is really difficult to get the F2 dependent visa, is it a good idea to go for visitor visa? if she goes for the visitor visa will it going to be a problem in the future, because in the future she has to go for the H1 dependent visa.
I really appreciate your help in answering my questions.

    Thanks,
    Kumar.

    • I am not sure if F-2 visa can be applied when the person has already completed the course and is now working on OPT. Assuming that it’s allowed, you shouldn’t have problems w/ F-2 stamping provided you have the salary slips, W-2s and employment letter from the employer.

When going for F-1/F-2 stamping, a person needs to show funds in order to prove they can support themselves even while being a full-time student. However, when you have already started working on OPT, the situation changes. You are no longer a full-time registered student, but a full-time worker (that is why I said I am not sure if she can go for F-2 stamping, when you are no longer enrolled in your school). So having funds really doesn’t matter, but you can carry your bank statements in order to show that you can support her.

I might be under Scenario 2

I had my I20 in 2009 and applied for F-1 Visa and got it in 2009 !

I changed my mind due to personal reason , and got me and I-20 which starts in january 2011 ! so am I ok with the Visa thing !? or do I need to E-mail someone ! ? Do I need a New Visa for that !!

My fellings tell me that I only need to state a good reason at the port of entry ! 🙂

    thank u in advance !

    • Saeed,
If you are going to the Same University that you got visa stamped for, you must be fine…if not, you would have to go for visa stamping. Either case, you need new I20, which I think you already have it. Yeah, you may have to say your reasons for delay at POE.

      • Hi Kumar,

A very helpful post. Thanks.. But I have a question. The US DHS website states that if you are out of the US for more than five months, you may have to apply for a new visa.. Now I am not sure if they mean it only for returning students or anyone who has got an F1 visa but has not resumed their program within five months’ time.. I have an F1 visa issued in May 2010 but I couldn’t go last year. I am planning to go this year in July. I’m a little confused about what to believe.

        Thanks,
        Murali

        • Just to add: I am going to the same school for the same program and I have asked the school to maintain the same sevis id in my new I-20.. Now do I have to pay the SEVIS fees again?

          Thanks,

  42. I applied for an International student visa and received an I-20 from a university in the United States. I arrived in the United States in October of 2010. When i reported to the University, I was told my I-20 visa or SEVIS ID has been expired since i was supposed to be here in Jamuary 2010? But the only thing is I didn’t get my Visa interview unitl August of 2010 and got to the United States as soon as I could, how was I to enroll in Jan/2010 when i didn’t get my Student Visa until Oct. /2010? Now , the University won’t let me enroll, told me to enroll somewhere else and then transfer to where i had initially applied? The University won’t reinstate me and won’t let me re-apply . What can I do? What should I do?

    • Ahmad, I think you can talk to few other universities and see if they can give you admission with fresh I-20. You would have to file for re-instatement from the new school. It is a very tricky situation, be careful talk to the schools and get things sorted out. Talk to international student advisors and do it right…

    • I do not think you need to know all that for visa. If you are so curious, go to the department web page and check the course list for your program.

    • You fall under Scenario 3. Just email them and tell that you are waiting on passport and will not be able to make it for this term. They will defer and send you an new I20 or you can ask them what are your options. Because summer is held in two terms, Summer 1 and summer 2. So, just ask them. Possibly call them.

  45. Hi,

I am taking a transfer out from my current school to another. I intend to travel to India before my new course starts, what is the procedure that i need to take to enter back to United States. Do i need to get my F1 visa stamped again? I am confused.

    • You do not need to get F1 visa stamping. But, you need to carry a new I20. Typically, if you tell the international advisor that you are travelling, they will give you a new I20 and a letter stating that you are student. Sometimes they may not ask letter, but new I20 is Needed. If you remember, first time when you came to US, they stamped on your I20….thats what will happen. If you are transferring, you may ask the new school to give you the I20 or just get a new I20 from current school. Either case, you should talk to both the advisors about your travel plans and they will recommend you the best way to do it. Do not get confused reading online. Just ask the advisors.

  47. Can you also comment and advise on the fourth scenario as follows.

    4. You had admission during 2007, valid I20 and have F1 visa stamping done for a particular University for 5 years, but had to withdraw my application becasue of family health reasons. Now I wish to get back to the school in the US. What should one do now taking this into consideration ?

    • Deep, It is a little more complicated issue. I do not know how long they usually keep your SEVIS active if you withdrew the application. If you withdrew your application, then things might have changed. I do NOT know. I do NOT want to give you any wrong information. If I were you, I would send an email to the Advisor asking for what are your options. Ask them if you will have to go to Visa stamping again. You can also call them if you think it is urgent. One important thing, you should email all the people as listed above in other scenarios and check the options. Ideally, you should not have any problem with admission, but Visa stamping is where I am not clear because of SEVIS and I20 involvement. Make sure you put in Subject of email as ” Prospective Student : Urgent visa and Admssion question “, you will get quick reply from them.
