Having graduated from Stanford with PhD and working with Google…things are falling into place except when people screw up the damn immigration system…
Didn’t get selected in the random process last year…had to continue with STEM-OPT…and this year no answer so far (AD/PP)…
Why should I go through all this??? Don’t people have little common sense when trying to get an opportunity for themselves…just because you can submit 10 applications with 10 different employers (errr… body shop consultants)…don’t do it…it will come back at you…don’t mess with the system…give everyone a fair chance…
These crappy immigration policies need to be revived… at least people with masters and PhD’s from US should get a break!!!
Though I don’t endorse the ‘language’ you’ve used, I agree with the point that everyone should get a fair chance whether the PhD is from “Stanford” or someother Uni as long as they meeting the underlying criteria.
From this year onwards, USCIS has sophisticated process to fish out the ‘duplicate’ applications and those will get rejected outright and thier Filing Fees will be confiscated as well.
Please remember that a simple Computer Program with inputs like Passport Number (Unique) AND/OR Name AND/OR Nationality AND/OR Gender can easily identify a duplicate …
I am so very sorry to read this and to see you so unhappy. The applicants in the competing H-1B pool are also looking for the same break as you are so I hope you do not have ill will toward them; I don’t think you do. An entire family depends on this professional to succeed as a lot of resources go into the education, whichever country it might be and they should all succeed. I don’t think the system can be subverted by one employer filing multiple times for the same employee. The other option, that of multiple employers filing for same employee is allowed by law.
Anyway, with a Ph.D. from Stanford and currently working at Google (congrats!) I suggest having your supervisor talk to Google HR and open communication with Google Foundation HR to sponsor a cap exempt H-1B for you; the latter group being a 501c3 can do this easily if your work is relevant to both entities.
All the best!

First I wish you luck in your h1b this year, it's not over yet. I also hate that some ppl are abusing the system by filing multiple petitions under different employers, but I guess there is not much we can do right now to change that. I was in a very similar situation as you are (BS/MS from Cornell and not selected last year).. But with a phd, have you considered filing for green card directly? Maybe you can manage to get in the EB-1 category and get your green card real quick.
Anyways, good luck! And let's hope that the immigration reform will take place next year so no other ppl should suffer this BS.
Thank you for your comments. I am not against anyone who are honest, hard-working or people who are genuinely working towards upping their career.
Its the folks who are insanely ridiculously abusing the current system.
On one of the forums, there is this guy who applied through 15 consultancies. All 15 consultant companies owned by the same parent company. Just different names so that they can file multiple petitions. There are so many people who are doing this.
It drives me crazy.
Honestly, the immigration system in US is what is to be blamed for all this mess. If there is a loophole, who wouldn’t mess with it!!
As suggested by my HR, the next step if H-1B wouldn’t work out is - go straight to green card under EB-1. Let’s see how things pan out.

true to that but there is a chance that with 15 applications also that guy may not get selected while one with a single application gets it … its a pure luck game buddy…
you have other ways to apply for GC due to phd…
but for those nothing in there other than this stupid lottery system…
It’s a matter of simple probability. Say regular cap has a prob of only 30% to be accepted, then the guy who applied through 15 different companies will have a chance of roughly 1-0.7^15=99.5%… Does that look fair to you!!!
