husband on f2 and wife f1 together applying

Dear Shankarji,

I am currently on J1 research scholar visa and my husband is on J2 with me in US. I am planning to go to school for my doctorate studies starting in Summer 2015. I was on F1 before, and did my Masters from 2007-2010 and now I am on J1 since 2011- till date. My husband joined me as J2 in 2012 and we have been together since then. I would like to know, will he have any chances of visa rejection if he applies with me for F2 at the same time of my F1 interview or it is advisable to apply later? Your guidance will be of value to me.

Thanks

I will let Dr. Shankar add this thoughts, in the mean time. I am not an expert on J2, but here are my two cents. Applying for F2 means that you need to ensure you have enough funds to support both you and your spouse. As long as that condition is met, you should have no problem. Maybe you can expect questions from the consular why you would like to change the visa status…just be prepared for that.
