Passport, GRE Registration Name mismatch – Correction at Test Center in India

Passport and GRE Name Mismatch, TOEFL Test center in India

One of our readers had minor name mismatch between his passport and GRE registration. He wrote a small article describing the issue and his experience dealing with it.  Thanks to him for sharing his experience. If you have any similar experience, please send to redbus2us(at)gmail.com

Passport , GRE Registration Names different  issue :

My original name is XXX YYY ZZZ

Where, first name=XXX, middle, Last.

In short it is given in academic certificates as XXX Y ZZZ.

But in my passport my name was printed as

First YYY and Surname=ZZZ.

During GRE registration my friend wrongly put entry as follows:

First name= XXX YYY middle-name=YYY and Last-name=ZZZ.

Later I figured out the mistake after registration. I contacted ETS regarding this issue but the response was negative, stating that its impossible to change the name adding that if minor issues are their I could change it at the center. On the test day at the Testing center, while taking GRE, I struggled in arguments with the supervisors and finally they modified it in accordance with my request as first name== XXX middle and Last-name=ZZZ. The final conclusion is that there is no need to worry if the difference is minor and if you could reasonably give proof for your identity. On the other hand if the names are totally unrelated of that on the passport then you have to cancel the exam and re-register. Also, at during taking TOEFL exam it was not at all an issue. They allowed me to attend it. Also we can make name modifications in TOEFL exam too at the center.

Conclusion:

Irrespective of the details of the situation, the experience clearly tells us that if there are genuine minor mistake in your name while registering, they do consider the changes  at the  test center.  But, it is always wise to avoid any kind of issues with your name by booking for GRE and TOEFL properly after you get your passport. Read article: Why to apply for Passport before registering for GRE and TOEFL.

Do you have any similar experience with Passport Name and GRE and TOEFL ?

What document you provided for identity? If it was your passport, then send a copy to them and request for name correction. You wont loose anything by contacting and requesting for name change.

Hi,
I would be really grateful if I could get an answer for my query.

In my passport, My GIVEN name is N** R**
Surname : K**
In the GRE form when I enter the entire given name under the first blank of given/first name it shows an error !!
Should I put R** as a middle initial only? or Do I write N**R** i.e. without any spaces ? or do I just drop the R** completely from the form?

Please reply soon if possible !
Thanks in advance

Hello Sir/Madam,
My name is DASARI PRIYA CHINCHOLI
in passport and in all documents it is as DASARI PRIYA
while creating a gre account i gave my first name as PRIYA and last name as DASARI middle name blank which is in sync with my passport but i forgot my password and answer to my security question. So i created an other account with different email id but it is showing an error message as the username or password is already existing. Is that i can create an account with First name as DASARI-PRIYA
and Last name as CHINCHOLI. Will that be a problem? Thanks in advance

Reply

Saurabh January 11, 2012 at 4:06 am

When you created the old account, you specified a username. You cannot use the same username again for a different account. Once you specify a different username, you can set correct first/last/middle name in that account.

Let me know if that doesn’t work.

Hi,
I have registered for GRE exam and need your help..please clear a doubt in my case.

NAME ON PASSPORT:
Surname: P****
Given Names: Vaneet S*** G***

The above Given Name is my (First name – Middle name – Fathers Name).

EXAM REGISTRATION:
First Name: Vaneet
Middle Name: S***
Last Name: P****

and i got the confirmation in the name ” Vaneet P****”

I just wanted to clear the doubt regarding the middle name and fathers name on passport.
1. Does the Fathers name on my given name will have any issues and..
2. the confirmation from prometric did not specify the middle name??
Will it create any issues on the exam day at the center??

Reply

Kumar March 12, 2011 at 6:33 am

Vaneet, In general, the most important pieces that have to be correct are First name or Given name and Last Name or Surname. Based on what you state, it seems fine to me. But, I would recommend you call Prometric to confirm the same….

Reply

Kumar March 12, 2011 at 6:31 am

Karthiek, You should talk to Prometric about your issue…if it is really small they should accept it at the test center….I would check with them.

Reply

Rahul February 19, 2011 at 10:07 am

Guys,

Last day I made a call to a Prometric executive. I tallked with a lady, I told my problem and she checked the database and she told my middle name is stored in their main database.
Generally you cant see your middle name on the confirmation. But if you have written your middle name at the time of filling out the form, then dont worry, it will remain stored in their database and at the time of your examination, you will get chance to rewrite your name once again on a new form given by the examiner.

and for those, who somehow, missed your middle name or forget to write, you can think for an affidavit in court stating your original name and your “name without the middle name” are both indicate the same person…

All the best !!!

Hi,
Accidentally I written the names Given name & Family name in reverse during the GRE registration form in online.

In my Passport:
Family Name: D
Given Name: S

But while registering GRE, I wrote
Family name : S
Give Name: D

From the discussions above,
I think we can edit at the test center, just before entering into room in the computer, where we check our details.

Is it right??? or it makes any problem to me.

Hi ,
i would really appreciate a repsonse to my following question.
My passport has the following name :
given name:- Lxxx Dyyy
surname:Mzzz
fathers name: Rxxx Mzzz

now for GRE my regisered name is:
first: Dyyy
Middle (blank)
last:Mzzz

however my educational certificates have Dyyy Rxxx Mzzz.. since fathers name is arbitrality added as middle name .

will this create a problem when applying for universities as it is not consistent with passport?

should i have my passport name changed by dropping the Lxxxx as thats the only place it appears or will an affidavit do??

or do i need to change my gre name to Lxxx Dyyy Mzzz as to be consistent with passport and if so do they allow it??

Reply

Kumar January 19, 2011 at 1:36 am

Devika, I am not sure what your real name is….Ideally, your name on most of your education certificates should be in sync with Passport. In case, there are some discrepancies, you can get it notarized and apply to US schools. But, make sure your names in Passport matches with GRE registration. Last Name or Family Name is very important in US. One of our readers updated us that, at the GRE test center, he was able to request them to change the name on the GRE registration to reflect what is on passport…not sure if it would work for you, but just something to keep in mind.

Reply

devika January 20, 2011 at 11:06 am

thanks for the reply. i did call up the prometric test centre as well as the ets but they said they do not do name changes once you have given the exam.

also what i have understood is that the certificates dont have to exactly match upto the passport but can have some variation though will have to be notorised.

i think my only option drop the Lxxx from my passport so that it is consistent with my gre name . does that seem like a full solution ???

Reply

Kumar January 22, 2011 at 12:22 am

Devika, It is your discretion. Look up all your certificates and see what helps you match your name consistently. You can always cancel GRE and re-register, but you cannot really change names on your certificates….also changing name on passport can be hectic as well. Think through and take decision based on your discretion.

Middle name: xxx
last name :yyy
