Free Immigration Advice from USCIS Officer– InfoPass Appointment

Couple of years ago, one of my friends was in a situation where one of his US visa status documents got expired, as it was overlooked by mistake, and they were in panic mode. At that time, they were not sure what to do…after they spoke to few people, attorneys, here and there they finally ended up setting up an appointment with USCIS immigration officer to get the right advice. This article will focus on how to get free immigration advice from USCIS immigration officer.

InfoPass – Free Immigration Advice Service from USCIS
Many of the internationals are not aware of this free service from USCIS.  If you need any immigration advice from a trained Immigration Officer from USCIS, you can use this free service by visiting the nearest USCIS field office.  The system will show you the nearest USCIS field office, if you enter zip code.  In fact, you can carry your own translator, if you cannot speak English fluently. When booking appointment, all you need to give are name, date of birth, email and phone number. That’s it!

When should you NOT use InfoPass : This service is for getting advice on immigration issues that are not routine inquires like below.

  • Check Your Case Status like
    • H1B Application Status
    • EAD Application Status, etc.
  • Getting immigration forms related info
  • Renew or replace Green Card
  • Apply EAD

So, just do not book an appointment for the sake of getting your standard queries like status update, etc. you can call the toll free customer service number 1-800-375-5283   for the same.

What documents do you need to carry for InfoPass Appointment ?
Basically you need to carry documents that identify you and all relevant documents related to your immigration issue. Below are typical documents.

  • Any government issued photo id like Passport, Driving license, etc.
  • Your current immigration related document like your Visa status info, EAD document.
  • Your I-94 details
  • Any documents that are related to your immigration issue like Approval/denial letters, etc.

How to book InfoPass Appointment ?
You can book InfoPass appointment online at USCIS website URL : https://my.uscis.gov/appointment
You will need to enter your zip code and it will suggest the nearest USCIS Field Office. In fact, you can seek advice in other countries too.  You can modify your appointment as well.  The interface is quite intuitive and very simple to use.

  1. MARIA SANCHEZ IS FROM HONDURAS CENTRAL AMERICA. HAS TWO MINOR CHILDREN. SHE ALREADY WENT TRUGH WITH HER 601A, AND WAS APPROVED. SINCE SHE IS FROM HONDURAS, WE NEED TO KNOW WHERE TO SEN HER APPROVAL FOR THE FINAL PROCEDURE.

  2. Hi. It looks impossible to get an info pass appointment these days in New York. Although they are available in Connecticut. So my question is as a NYC resident can I book an appointment in a different location where it is available?

    • You should be able to go to other location, there is no restriction as such. You can mention the same reason that you could not find a slot. If you are in doubt, you can call up USCIS customer service and clarify.
